JOY GORGE

"Joy Gorge" ran in BUF, the men's mag devoted to full-figured models, during the mid-1980's (note the heroine's punning allusion to the Culture Club frontboy). Back then, you couldn't have a decent ass-&-tits mag unless you included one running comic series: which certainly helped the pocketbooks of struggling working artists like Vic Martin. Joy's creator was a journeyman cartoonist who did a number of back-of-the-book gag strips for the comic books in the fifties and sixties - and is best remembered as an artist for Sick and Cracked magazines (doing a series of prison escape one-pagers for the latter) along with Marvel's short-lived attempt at doing their own Mad rip-off, Crazy. In addition to his stripwork for BUF, Martin also produced a series of story illustrations for the mag: sometimes under his own name, sometimes under a pseudonym that did little to mask his big-foot drawing style. Back when yours truly was writing fanta-sizer fiction for the mag, Martin illoed several of my tales, the first of which was "The Balloon Lady." But it's as the writer/artist for this sex-&-gluttony strip that Martin is best remembered by fat admirers.

(Mucho thanx to Timberwolf for loan of the first four strips.)
