INTRODUCTION

Another early fantasy.

Not too much to say about it: it's a pretty efficient story, one that doesn't take long at all to get to the point. Looking at it now, I find Hilary's exposition a bit awkward and wish I'd spent more time on the characterization. This is probably one of my more cartoonish stories.

It appeared in the August, 1991, issue of BUF. I've corrected the biggest mistake in the printed version: an early reference to weight gain that was written as "eighty" and printed as "eight." Outside of clarifying a few lines, plus correcting a few spelling and grammatical errors that neither I nor the magazine's editors (hah!) caught, the story is essentially as it was originally written.
