I just discovered I have these, 18 to be exact. What are these? I can't find any explanation beyond that many people don't care about them. Well, I'm not too proud to say I DO care about them, deeply, even though I have no idea what they represent.
Can I trade them in like Green Stamps (dating myself)? Or frequent flier miles? Do I get a Wishbook? Do I get to cop a feel of the DimBoard poster of my choosing once I reach 100,000? Including the female ones?

Nice launch, Egbert. I'll take it from here.
I don't know if there's a solid explanation already posted somewhere, Tres, but here's my take. When someone posts something that really blows your skirt up, you click the little crumpled up Kleenex in the lower left corner of the post. I believe it's actually a white carnation. You give them positive reputation, and the number of points associated with it are determined by how many points you yourself have.
When you reach 30 points and 100 posts, you can then change the under-your-name name which appears with each of your posts. Y'know, what normally says "senior member," "junior member," etc.
Some would say the number of rep points one receives is largely commensurate with how often you post. Mmmmkay, I'm the one who says that. The fact that I've got enough points to change my under-the-name name is a testament to that.

You use them to increase your power on the board.
I'm 900 posts and 48 rep points away from Ascension. After that, I can start forming a clan.

B-Babe, you ignorant slut! It's a pair of scales!

*Looks at middle icon like clouds, tries to see scales in it and decides it's time for one of those fancy monitors*
I'm didn't see crumpled Kleenex but i sure can't see any scales.
I assumed it was a tumbleweed and was wondering what the significance of that would be..........
I'm gonna go with the crumpled Kleenex.

THEY
ARE
SCALES

The dark areas are *shading*. These are old-school "Blind Justice"-style scales.

I currently have more posts than points. An obvious contrast of quantity to your quality. :D

Everyone started with 10... lol, so yeah, until you have a couple more posts, you're in a point surplus! :)

Y'know, I tend to forget about those goldarned things 'til somebody mentions them again. Then I go to check mine and tsk tskingly shake my head. Seems that, except for a few, you don't love me, YOU REALLY DON'T LOVE ME! [ala Sally Fields, for those who don't relate]
I always enjoy your posts, Tres, so after your little nudge, I was reminded to do something about it. You make me laugh, and that's something that's, well, priceless, so you just got yourself another point.
Perhaps we need to have a more outstanding icon than a wad of tissue or scales (sorry, Eggy, but I have to agree with FLO on that one, 'though I wouldn't have figured it out if he hadn't), something that will be more of a reminder that such a thing exists and one should be mindful of "rewarding" (for lack of a better word at the moment) others for posts that speak something special to us. Then again, we can already rate a thread for its contents, but I suppose the rep thingee is aimed at individual posts and posters.
The bottom line for me, however, is what I've written here before. IMO, the reputation points should be a thing of the past. I think we have a lot of people here who've already been judged harshly by society, and they're bound to be just a tad raw. They come here to share their feelings (okay, some share other things, as well ;) ), then have to deal with being judged in a place that's supposed to be safe. (Being left out is just a tad reminiscent of those days in school when we were the last kid to be chosen for the dodge ball team, dontcha think?)
I suppose the reputation points are supposed to be an inducement to get people to post more often, but surely we can find a better way for people to earn the right to put something silly, rather than stuffy, under their board name.~Bountifully, Fuchsia

Sorry if this is a "duh" subject. I just found it amusing. And now I'm up to 23.
Special thanks to BoBabe and FEast, who both contribute mightily to making this board such compulsive fun.
