These are three major Buffalo events, and I am looking to set up a Dims meet up around the times of either Taste of Buffalo or Allentown Art Festival (which also has a LOT of food).
I know a lot of people don't look on the events board, so I need help spreading the word.
As for rooms, Buffalo/Amherst has a LOT of cheap hotels. Red Roof Inns abound, as well as others. I KNOW there are a bunch of Upstate/Western New Yorkers (and I hope that some Canadians could come as well, and also maybe the Boston crew? :D Well, really everyone in the NY/New England area), so I think we could do a big thing. Buffalo is gorgeous in the summer, and there is a lot to do.
What I need from y'all is tips on how to organise this, and for lots of people to come!
If I'm not acknowledging any aspects of event planning, ask me or point it out.

I would consider coming up for this. I have a friend in Buffalo who I haven't seen in a while.
I will keep checking here. I wouldn't be much help for organizing because I am WAY far away in Central NJ.
But maybe I can get a few people together to come up with me?

There's great food at every festival. The Italian Festival and the Hellenic Festival are my favs. *sigh* A nice italian sausage with the cold drink of your choice is just the best on a hot summer day. :D Buffalo is a foodee's wet dream. Good food around every corner. :eat2:

Exactly! I think Buffalo is a great place to set up a meet-up. >w<

I don't have time to dig around on the sites to check for dates and stuff. (I have to do the stinkin laundry. ) But put me down as *strongly* interested depending on the dates. I'll check them out later but the arts festival is sounding pretty good to me.
Allentown art fest is June 9th and 10th.
Taste o' is July 7th and 8th.
Thursday in the Square is pretty much every summer Thursday. :)

I'd more likely do the Arts Festival. The NAAFA conventions starts immediately after the Taste o' and I'm thinking I may go to the NAAFA event in Chicago if I can scrape up the funding.

Hmm. I just hope more people look and/or reply at this. I want to make a gigantic meet up. :p

There's a chance I could be down for a buff. meet up. It's about 4.5 hours from me through Canada! Thing is I can already feel my summer filling up, and like Lilly I want to go to NAAFA--though I can do that without losing work.
It would probably have to be something set down in stone and ahead of time so I could plan time off and other stops on the road trip. I've wanted to road trip to the NE forever, so this could be one of several stops?
Freaking money though. Argh!

Well as it turns out I may not be able to go to NAAFA afterall. I was up in the air between NAAFA and The Vegas Bash but it seems the Vegas Bash will be cheaper and I have to be more fiscally conservative. So no NAAFA this year. :( I've never been to Chicago so I was really hoping to go.
If you are looking to go to Buff and you're up for splitting a room tab that would work out well for both of us.

If needed, I can go poke around and ask about room rates for either weekend. Maybe I can haggle a little if I know several people are coming.

Eep!
I'll admit that I don't look at the Events very often but I have a brother in the Buffalo area and it's only a 3 and half hour drive for me.
I don't have any solid plans for June or July yet but it wouldn't be impossible for me to hop in the car and drive out there to meet some DIMs folks.

Now THIS is a plan. I would *so* be there. Buffalo is only an hour and some drive away from me, and an hour's wait at the border. So ya, I'd surely be interested in ... whatever is good for everyone else!I'd probably enjoy the arts festival, of course, the most. :P

Dee! :D This just keeps getting better and better.
Okay, I did a little research. It would probably be better to center the meet up around Taste of Buffalo, because the hotels here mark their rooms up during Allentown Art Festival. So, yeah. My car holds three people (other than myself). I assume at least one other person would show up with a car, which would be good. If I can get a sort of "roster" of people who cen definitely come, I'll work on going to some hotels and haggling on room prices.
Also, Miss Gypsy-- an hour's wait at customs? Which bridge do you use? I cross overs at the Lewiston-Queenston bridge and have hever really had to wait more than 30 minutes. The Rainbow Bridge is where I always get stuck for ages. You probably already know this, but in case you don't, it's just a tip. :batting:

Queenston-Lewiston IS the one I use. It's just... US customs now wants a sample of your friggin DNA to cross. The past 4 times I have gone to Buffalo and area, it's taken at least 60 minutes to get up to the bleedin' are where the border guards are. Not like coming back into Canada, where you toss the guard a beer, and say "eh", and you're back in. lol

Wow. Well, I guess maybe the times I cross are low-traffic, low-pissy times. Well, one time there was a big line because they were searching all the Canadian cars.
(One time I almost got turned away on the way into Canada-- guess it was a bad day. :p)

Yeah, cuz you know, we Canadians are the WORST THREAT to the States right now. :P
I wish I could run into low-traffic, low-pissy times! The worst wait I ever had was last summer - we were waiting for 3 and a half hours to get to the border!

I'd be willing to go, my car seats four regular sized people, or three big peoples (I'm not making fun here...the back of my car is SMALL, plus it is a two-door so in and out of the back seat is awkward for anyone.)
In any case, I'd be willing to help out, and try to organize stuff...if needed.

The Taste of Buffalo is just before the NAAFA convention so I think that knocks me out, unless I can figure out a way to stop by on the way there. I need to look at a map. And that means I need to DRIVE to Chicago.

i might be able to go.... just have to see whats going on around those dates. i live in Rochester, so its not that far of a drive.
Okay, update: finals are almost over, and as soon as they are, I'll take a day and go to area hotels and see what kind of room pricings I can get.

My celica is finally back in commission... however, I would be driving in from Geneseo/Rochester.
not that I have passenger space anyway... I have a decently sized front passenger seat, and erm...half...of a back seat (how toyota ever expected people to sit in the back seat of my car is completely beyond me)
However, my passenger seat is going to be occupied by my crutches so I'm not being very helpful :D

well, it's about 6 hours normal driving speed to rochester, I'm assuming maybe 7 1/2 to Buffalo from Westchester? .. Usually it takes me about 4 hours to get to rochester at MY normal driving speed. :D
I would offer a ride, but I'm going to be already up in those parts for all of June.

Heh. 4 hours would be sweet, but I don't trust those upstate cops... my brother and his girlfriend went on a road trip to Toronto and got ticketed like three times .
Even at normal speeds, that actually doesn't sound too bad. Having made single-day trips between NYC and Chicago (which I don't recommend ), I could handle a 7.5-hour trip without much trouble. If I left around ten on a Friday I could be there for Friday evening and all of Saturday, then drive home on Sunday. In my Volvo it'd probably take 1.5 to 2 tanks of gas each way, so if anyone from the metro area wanted to carpool (Dubh?), the trip wouldn't be unbearably expensive. (Assuming we don't go to war with Iran and drive gas prices even higher, but that's a discussion for Hyde Park...)
All this would be contingent on my getting Friday and Saturday off and having the money to make the trip and book a hotel room. I don't know yet whether either of those are going to happen, so consider the possibility of my attendance to be tentative at best.
