Europa Universalis II, Hearts of Iron II, Civ I-III, Advanced Dungeons and Dragons, GURPS, Traveller, Age of Empires II, and Diplomacy.
I've been bashing away at board games since 1976 - 30 years next August. I've been computer gaming since 1979, my start on the ol' Atari 400.

I play mainly RPG's and right now I am working my way through Final Fantasy Advance (with help from guide book when really stuck). I am hoping to get DragonQuest 8 for Christmas.

I'm about as much of a casual gamer as they come. I was a Nintendo fanboy growing up and I still break out the old-school stuff every so often. I firmly believe that Super Mario Bros. 3 is the best game ever made, despite the lack of Yoshi.
I am actually looking forward to the Nintendo Revolution. Since the current stuff doesn't really interest me, I think this is the best chance the gaming industry's gonna have to hook me again, since it's probably not gonna be like anything ever done before.
By the way, I do love a good RPG once I get started. I've beat the hell out of Final Fantasy VII, and actually just played all the way through Chrono Trigger for the first time not too long ago. Skies of Arcadia's pretty sweet too, I'd like to see something else come out of that series.

I loved video games since I was five years old. Does anyone remember the arcade version of the original mario bros. game?
Looking forward to the ds although I haven't owned a home console in years.
I hung out with people who played rpgs and things like magic when I was in high school. Does that make me a quasi geek?

Remember it I got it running on my computer. With a program that allows my computer to pretend it's the old arcade.

Cool! I was introduced to it by a teacher back in grade five, and actually saved up enough money to buy it in highschool. However in all those years, I've never managed to complete a game of it face to face! I do sometimes play it online (play by email, which actually I think is the perfect way to play the game, aside from the problem of people dropping out in the middle).
I'm a long time gaming geek beyond Diplomacy too. I was introduced to Dungeons and Dragons shortly after Diplomacy, and for the next several years played all sorts of face-to-face role playing games (D&D, Gamma World, Traveller, Space Opera, Champions, Aftermath, Top Secret, Runequest....). I haven't had the opportunity to do any face to face role playing in years (work, family, lack of a group), but over the past year have done some play by yahoo group of the game Heroquest, which has been interesting.
I've not done a lot of computer gaming. Nothing against it, just that it seems most of the more interesting games take a lot of time, which is always in tight supply. The one exception is a quite different game called King of Dragon Pass, sold by A-Sharp. I've played it again and again and never get tired of it.

My sweetie is a big time gamer, has played various games since he was 15 years old (that's almost 30 years now, amazing!) He's played everything from the original D&D to Traveller to White Wolf games to Diplomacy to Runequest to Ars Magica to... geez, I've lost track.
Me? I'm a dabbler. For pen and paper games, I've played Dragonquest, Runequest, the White Wolf system (Werewolf, Vampire, Mage), Call of Cthulu once or twice, and Ars Magica, a game I adore. Right now we're playing AD&D and it's fun, only because he's running the game and it's more than just dungeon bashing which gets boring to me after about 10 minutes. There is a lot of thinking, role playing, and the occasional kick ass fight, which is the perfect combo for me.
As far as computer gaming, I was heavily into Everquest 2 until my computer broke, so now I'm game-less. But I enjoy Diablo 2, World of Warcraft, and Everquest, and even purchased a gaming computer from Alienware (great computer, sucky customer service, which is why I haven't called them yet to fix my video card). I also used to play Dark Age of Camelot until I got frustrated with all the "bots" and how long it takes to level.
We also have a PS, PS2, Xbox, and now my sweetie picked up two PSP's which he and my daughter are playing a lot. There have been a few console games I've enjoyed -- Bushido Blade I and II, Buffy the Vampire Slayer for example -- but I just don't seem to get around to playing as much as they do. Something about running a household, dontcha know. Plus, I have fun hanging with my friends online, which I find more satisfying most of the time.

Explain the game to me, how do you play is it risk?
Explain the game to me, how do you play is it risk?
Errr, a little bit like Risk, but without dice.
You start the game running one of the seven "Great Powers" of Europe in 1901. The board covers Europe basically, and is divided up into around 50 land territories and 18 sea territories. 34 of the Land territories are "supply centres," and you win the game by controlling 18 or more of the supply centres. Each supply centre can support the existance of one army or navy for its owner.
Each great power starts off controlling three of the supply centres, and corresponingly three 'units' (armies or navies). In most cases this is two armies and one navy. Only one unit can be in a space at a time (a big difference from Risk). Armies can only go on land, navies can only go on water or on coastal land.
There are two turns per year, Spring and Fall, during which units may attempt to move. After each turn there is a retreat phase for units that are forced out. After each Fall retreat phase, ownership of supply centres is tallied up (you own all supply centres where you have a unit, plus any that you owned at the end of last fall that nobody else has a unit on now--if they moved through in the spring that is OK), then there is the winter build phase, where each power's number of units is adjusted to equal its number of supply centres.
Each turn a unit may hold where it is, attempt to move to an adjacent space, or support a hold or move (but only to a spot that the unit could move to itself). Errr, there is one more type of move, where one or more navies convoys an army from one piece of land to another. If two units try to move to the same spot (or one unit tries to move to a spot where another one is holding), the one with more supports wins.
That is the tactical side of the game, and it is moderately engaging. However the really enthralling part of the game is that negotiation between players is explicitly part of the game. Since there are seven powers, no one power can easily dominate on its own. But if say England and France form an alliance, they can generally overpower Germany, and share the conquered supply centres. Of course, you can agree to whatever you want, there is nothing saying you have to honor your agreements, so a large part of the game is deciding when you can trust someone....and when is the time to stab in the back someone who trusts you.
Most games end in a draw, typically between three or four of the players. In the rare solo win, the winner usually used a nice balance of alliance building and treachery (although that is not the only way to do it, just the most classic way. In my only solo win I actually started with treachery, then mostly road alliances to victory with only the most gentle of stabs at the end to seal the deal, more common is two solid allies become dominant, then one slips up and leaves him/her self open to a good stab, giving the other a shot at the solo).
There are also many variant boards and rules.
For all things Diplomacy on-line, go to www.diplom.org. You can find all sorts of articles, as well as an introduction to play by email games.
For the full official rules, however, you should buy the game. It is a little expensive (in the tradition of war games), but that is the only way the holders of the rights make any money.

Role playing Vicky? How exactly is that done? Is it where you assume certain styles of leadership for your nation? I've done that in EU2 - my favorite is to have a dig-in-heels, bloody-minded, NEVER say die leader for Byzantium or the Timurids. It's such a rush to declare war on the Ottoman Empire in 1419, only to later refuse their demands for annexation until 1487, when the game just suddenly ends with the Ottomans turbo-annexing Thrace...
BTW: i play none of these things, and on top of that, I make rude, rude remarks about the people who do play them.
There. I've said it. I believe in being honest.

Sample rules without stats:
The Game
Quote:
The Game?
In this RPG, you have the opportunity to take control of a country and shape its destiny by directing its diplomacy, arranging its finances and controlling its military. Based on Paradox’s Grand Strategy game, Victoria, this RPG emphasizes the importance of diplomacy, economic management and the military as equally important steps for a country to rise as a superpower among nations. You may take any path you desire, however, you are encouraged to act in the manner of a 19th century monarch (or leader, depending on your country’s form of government) and to seek the same types of goals they would have. The destiny of a country is in your hands so enjoy the game!
How do I start?
Have a look at the Civic Stats page and apply for a current open. Apply in the Applications & Questions thread, and then once approved, set up your court.
How do I play?
Once approved (see above) you set up your nations court. This where most of the Role Playing is done. In the title of your court, make the name clear, but add some flare to it. You may use your artistic license in the court, however historical heads of state or government are preferred. Modern names from television, popular culture and other silly things will be asked to be removed.
####
Campaign System
Values:
Maximum Spirit: 100/100
Maximum Cohesion: 100/100
Maximum Weapons: 20/20
Maximum Artillery: 20/20
Maximum Defence:15/15
Maximum Fortifications:5/5
Maximum Command Skill:10/10
Maximum Unit Strength:100/100
Calculation:
Each nation has a national spirit and a national cohesion level that is placed upon all armies of that nation. Each Weapons and Artillery Point has a 50% chance of being successfully countered by a defence point. If un-countered, each point of Weapons can destroy 2 strength points and Artillery 3 strength points. Each un-countered weapons point destroys 1 spirit and 1 cohesion, and each un-countered point of Artillery destroys 2 spirit and cohesion points.
The attacker fires first and if the defender does not break or is completely destroyed during this, the defender returns fire against the attacker. If neither side breaks or is destroyed, the battle continues into the next turn (unless on of the players sends withdrawal orders. NOTE: More units can be marched into the battle.) The Command Skill affects the overall performance of your army, and can add bonuses to spirit and command.
Terrain plays an important aspect of the campaign as well as unloading and loading. If an amphibious assault is made, the attacker suffers from a 40% reduction in all points.
Movement is essential. Each land unit of foot can move 3 provinces a turn. Each unit of horse can move 4 provinces per turn. Engaging in battle counts as movement through 1 province. Unloading and loading is equivelent to moving through 2 provinces.
The units are as follows:
Type/$/MP/Maintaince
Infantry/15/5/10
Native Infantry/10/4/8
Cavalry/22/6/10
Rural Cavalry/12/5/8
Garrison/8/4/5
Indigenous Infantry/2/3/2
Infantry W. Artillery/22/6/15
Cavalry W. Artillery/25/8/15
Cavalry W. Hussars/29/10/20
Sea Units:
Man of War/30/5/20
Commercial Raider/25/4/15
Frigate/10/2/5
Monitor/40/5/25
Ironclad/50/5/25
Sail Cruiser/45/8/30
Cruiser/60/10/40
Corvette/50/7/35
Clipper Transport/30/2/4
####
Colonization & Manpower
Each nation has a manpower level from which to build units and replace damaged ones. Colonization also costs manpower as well as cash. Manpower slowly regenerates, though it is not fast.
In certain parts of the world, there are colonies which may become part of your nation. It costs money and manpower to seize a colony (see list) and if the following rules apply:
-You must have access to that colony.
-You can only claim one colony per turn.
-It takes two turns before the colony becomes part of your nation.
-If two countries claim the same colonial province at the same time, then the following event occurs;
i) One country can back away from the claim, and the let the other nation control it.
ii) The colony can be partitioned between the nations involved.
iii) If the involved nations cannot decide, the can declare war over the colonial claim (through the event).
For costs of colonization, see the Colonization thread.
####
Trade, Industry & Fortifications
There are 3 levels of industry in the game. These increase the amount of money you make per turn. Each level of industry per province costs $400 to start construction. Each province may only contain 3 levels maximum. It takes 2 turns to build level 1, 4 turns level 2 and 6 turns level 3. Each level adds $20 to your national income.
There are two types of trade agreements, a “free trade agreement” and a “economic interdependence agreement”. A “free trade agreement”(FTA) will bring a mediocre net profit to each nation equally, where as a “economic interdependence agreement”(EIA) brings greater wealth to the smaller of the participating players. A FTA will bring on average a 10-15% increase in income, whilst a EIA will offer far higher benefits to the smaller nations (around 20-30% increase), with only about a 5% increase for the larger nation. Trade agreements can have as many nations participating in it as they wish, however after 4 agreements, no positive effects are felt.
Fortifications help control your territory and deny it to the enemy. There are five levels of fort, each costing $300 per turn to construct. Level 1 takes 2 turns to complete, Level 2 takes 4 turns and so on. Each level of fortification has its own troops in the fortification, which is equivalent to one Garrison unit.
####
Stability
Stability increases your income, lowers revolt risk, and generally is better. Stability maxims out at +3, and cannot be lower than -3. A country can invest $300 per turn to increase its stability.
Technology
To start researching a technology, $200 is required per turn. It takes 6 turns to research technology.
Tech Trade
If part of an alliance, a maximum of four technologies can be traded per turn.
If not part of an alliance, a maximum of two techs can be traded per turn.
Orders
Orders should be in by Friday midnight GMT +10. (which is Friday 14:00 London.) Orders will not be done for you, but as long as they are clear and concise, there is no problem and no standard layout is required. All orders are Private Messaged to the overall mod. Please try and have orders in on time.
General Advice
This is meant to be a game, not the real world, so just remember to have fun and don't take anything personally. If players which to discuss a matter with me in confidence, I am available on MSN, Yahoo, AIM and ICQ.
Not included above are techs, stats or events.

which game is that for?
I loooove games!!! I play Halo 2 on Xbox Live pretty much every day and I love it. Here's a link to my stats:
http://www.bungie.net/Stats/PlayerStats.aspx?player=Mortal%20Mad%20Matt
And to clear up a few things, Halo 3 hasn't even been announced yet although it's obvious they're making it, after how well Halo 2 did they'd be stupid not to. Bungie have confirmed they are working on a new project but they are just calling it their "next project". They haven't officially announced Halo 3 yet. Bill Gates did let slip that when Sony released PS3 they would walk slap-bang straight into Halo 3 but he later withdrew his comments.
If anybody plays Halo 2 on Xbox Live, feel free to hit me up, my gamertag is Mortal Mad Matt. I consider myself to be pretty good at the game. Just today I got 24 kills without dying in a game and I ended up with 42 kills and 5 deaths, lol. I also had 95% So that was a pretty good match. Anyway I'll stop rambling on. Ciao.
