Last night I had the privilege to attend a concert given by New York City's reknowned Opera Noire. They donated their talent and time to help raise money for a local children's music program. Each artist was more talented then the next and ALL deserve to be the lead singer in any major opera troup.
At the post recital reception my girlfriend suddenly broke out laughing...when she could finally contain herself, I asked her why the laughter...her comment...
"I finally understand why you like opera...most of the women are big." I never thought of it that way...I always thought it was the music...then again I have dated several opera singers...so maybe she is onto something. Then again, I also do like baritone pieces...and I am definitely not into men.
Could this be a whole new view into the arts?

I love classical music and the occasional opera, but I'm no opera singer, except in the shower. In my younger days I sometimes considered a career as an opera singer, but the problem is that I'd always need to be nude and all lathered up in order to sing properly. :)
However I've noticed something interesting. I'm certainly a very big woman, I've been fat all my life, and during one medical exam I remember the doctor commenting that I have huge lungs. Coincidence? That might explain while I can really belt out a tune when the mood strikes.
Huge lungs are also handy when I need to speak in front of a crowd, or yell at my husband ( :smitten: ). On the other hand, they are a mixed blessing because whenever I get the hiccups, the whole county knows it. ;)

Awwww, thanx. :batting:
Methinx opera singers in general would tend to be big because they need to project their voices to fill an entire concert hall, and sometimes they need to be heard above a full orchestra. It takes a lot of lungpower and stamina to do that. Mezzo-soprano Marilyn Horne said that it takes a big booster to launch a rocket.
One of the biggest (in talent, power and physical size) sopranos in the opera world is Sharon Sweet. Here are some videos of her:

According to Sharon Sweet herself, her size is due to a thyroid condition known as Hashimoto's Syndrome.
