The Making of a BBW
By the Observer

(Here a pleasant tale, adapted for Dimensions from the Pound Perfect Paradise website original)

It was near 1:00 a.m. in the #4 University dorm. Senior Paul Crandell quietly slipped into his pajamas, not desiring to disturb his Sophomore roommate, Jim Knight.

"Don't worry," said Jim in the dimly lit room. "I'm still awake, only went to bed fifteen minutes before you slipped in. I just wished I had your luck."

"What do you mean?" replied Paul, fully suspecting Jim was talking about his developing relationship with Carolyn Walker.

"She's full figured and proud of it - every chubby gal I try and date is trying to diet. She's a rare exception."

"Today, yes, but it wasn't always that way. Would you like some pointers?"

"What do you mean?"

"I like larger women - you know that, but size acceptance doesn't come naturally for most women. It has to be cultivated. Carolyn thinks first of me liking her, not me liking larger women. And because she feels liked she doesn't feel she has to play games about watching her weight. Get the difference?"

Jim thought about what he had observed of Carolyn. At the beach the previous weekend she had devoured several hot dogs, a couple of malt liquors and four pieces of fried chicken in the course of the afternoon. Over the past semester he had seen her indulge in fritters or éclairs from the commons pastry bar more than once. The tightening effect on her wardrobe was becoming increasingly noticeable; Jim estimated her to easily be near 190 lbs, perhaps approaching 200. But when Paul had offered to share a German chocolate cake in the lounge a few evenings before, she was one of those who had not just one but two generous pieces.

"She sure isn't shy with her appetite, that's for sure."

"But that's now. You didn't know her three years ago."

"What made the change?"

"I knew she enjoyed eating heartily then - and once or twice a month would have a big dinner or let herself order pizza in. But she’d gained the freshman 20 her first semester and was struggling to keep herself in check. She was determined not to go over a size 12.”

“How did you resolve that one?”

“Let nature take its course - I made a point of dating her every 3-4 weeks and showing her a good time, never letting food be a focus. Then one evening when I was sure we were both hungry and talked about having dessert before even ordering the main course – that way I had her committed. After that dessert became something easy for her to give herself permission to do."

"And then you mixed in food more regularly?"

"Right. In the commons I would volunteer to get her things and on occasion add something on my own initiative. It was all subliminal, but after a few months she was almost expecting it, even making suggestions."

"Didn't she worry about gaining weight?"

"At first she didn't seem to even notice, and when she did it didn't seem that much, about ten lbs over eight months. I professed ignorance but told her that must be what was making her look so much healthier and alive. After that her appetite seemed to pick up noticeably - like I had given her permission to be herself."

"What about her friends? Didn’t they say anything?

"A few did. I called them 'jealous' but also developed a counter attack. I started making community gifts to her dorm - if I dropped off a dozen donuts for the six girls I know Carolyn will probably eat 2-3, but so would most of the others. How can you criticize someone while you’re sharing their goodies?

“So what you’re saying is, find someone who enjoys food and then give them freedom to be themselves?”

“Basically - you have to like them and they have to like you and themselves.”

Jim thought immediately of Tracy Schiller - perky, intelligent, with long black hair, and breasts and hips that seemed too large for her somewhat pudgy waist. She looked like she could have once been heavier, but ….

The next afternoon Jim took care to observe Tracy at the campus food court. She pondered the entrees, then took a veal marsala with cheese, salad and diet soda. Not exactly starvation rations but her student pass would have entitled her to whipped potatoes, veggies and dessert. She obviously was keeping herself in some kind of check.

The next two days were the same - a moderate meal, but not rabbit food either. But then on Friday came a surprise. Instead of an entree she made herself a generous banana split, replete with whipped cream and cherries. And she ate it with a gusto and enjoyment that was absent earlier in the week. Then she went back and had a burger and fries. Jim knew that he had to get to know her better.

It took some effort, but two weeks later he managed to be at a pizza and beer bash at Tracy's dorm. She had a few large glasses along with several pieces of pizza before he started kidding around and hitting it off with her. He locked up a date with her for the next weekend.

Mindful of Paul's advice, he kept the emphasis off of food. He even included another couple join them on a double date, as the group enjoyed the spectacle of a traveling ice show that was in town. It was the other couple who suggested stopping at the Dairy Queen on the way home, where he and Tracy had a burger and ice cream blizzard.

Jim knew Tracy's class schedule, and started timing his lunches to be with her 1-2 times a week. He would deliberately not get a dessert for himself then, offer to get them each one. And Tracy graciously started to accept.

Jim started plying Tracy with dating opportunities – a mining ghost town, a travelogue, the County fair, various types of dances. Every two weeks or so it was something different. It was also a welcome a chance to get away from campus. Some of the occasions were physically demanding. But somewhere within each one were chances to eat – and he let Tracy set the pace.

As Paul had predicted, Tracy began to blossom, along with some unexpected help from her roommate Julie.

Julie had a part time job in a local bakery, and surplus items were either given away or went home with the help. Julie began supplying her roommates with a regular supply of bear claws, éclairs, fritters and tortes - even an occasional cake. Initially Tracy was cautious, but soon was indulging freely, even sharing these goodies with Jim.

“I need to be careful,” she cautioned as she enjoyed a crème filled éclair. “I was once heavier and it took a lot to lose it – I nearly starved myself for two years!”

Jim was careful to be polite, first nodding politely, then suggesting hot chocolate as a suitable chaser later in the cool evenings as Tracy enjoyed another pastry. Within six months Tracy began outgrowing her blouse and slacks. She started fussing about this fact to Jim. He reassured her with the utmost of sincerity and became even more attentive. “I like you with some added upholstery.” he confided.

“But I put so much effort into losing weight – was it all for nothing?”

“Well, were you any more popular or was life better for having starved yourself for two years?”

“Not really – I never really thought of myself as fat, it was just something you had to do or you weren’t right. But it didn’t really change my life”

“Then why not relax and listen to your body? Its beautiful and I love it” said Jim.

After some inititial internal debate Tracy came to realize that Jim's wishes were actually akin to her own. She relaxed, changing her wardrobe and accepting the changes in her figure. Being skinny, or even slender, wasn’t an important issuer anymore.

The truth was that her newly relaxed attitude towards food was causing her to slowly regain the thirty pounds that she had shed in her last year and a half of high school. Her typical commons breakfast seemed conservative enough – eggs, meat and hash browns. But when enhancerd to include three sausages and a three egg portion along with a oversize muffin it began to add up.

Suppers on campus were a chance for variety. And for quantity. You could have a couple of pieces of chicken, or breaded veal or fish. This could be matched with potatoes, rice, or macaroni. And then there were veggies. But most tempting were the desserts - especially the pies ands muti-layered cakes. Initially as a student Tracy had shunned them, but now gradually she permitted them to creep onto her serving tray once aor twice a week. After a few months they had become a daily enjoyment - and Tracy didn't care.

It wasn’t long before the outline of Tracey’s lower belly was quite noticeable in any slacks that she wore; she also began sporting love handles and backfat on her upper torso. Her upper arms were full and round and her fulsome cheeks highlighted the formation of a putative second chin.

Tracy by now knew she was gaining big time, but it just didn’t matter to her – she had found a level of eating which seemed right to her and was fine with her boyfriend. Still, it came as a small surprise that after a year she had gained thirty-two pounds.

Jim feigned shock at the news, reassuring her that it certainly didn’t appear to be so much. But he offered to help her if "she thought she needed to do something drastic." And for three weeks she did, but then quickly tired of the regimen. She gradually resumed the eating patterns which had become preferred her way of life.

As a result at the end of two years another twenty-six pounds graced her body, bringing her to slightly over 200 pounds. Jim thought he had one of the loveliest girls in the world as his sweetheart.

They wound up getting married after graduation in June, and reliable authority says the wedding dress was a size 20.
