View Full Version : What's happening with chat?
I just looked, and there were a total of two people in the room.
Sure, that is a bit of a fluke, but at times of day when a year ago I'd commonly see twenty, now there are maybe nine. And there are times, like this, when the room is functionally empty.
Now, I've seen chat rooms collapse a few times before, in my decade plus gadding around Dimensions. But usually that was accompanied by migration from one chat room to another. From regular chat to the Weight Room, from the Weight Room to Bulge. And back again afterwards. Is there some other chat that the people are migrating towards for the moment? Or is this different, where there isn't really a fat chat site now?

Chat is still going strong, mostly after 10 or 11pm EST. That's when I see it, anyway. I'm sure there are other high traffic times.

Chat attendance has always fluctuated. And since I never advertise Dimensions anywhere, it's all word-of-mouth. The other night when I looked in, there were over 50 people and sometimes there are more than that.
I also think some former chatters have migrated to the booming forum.
And I think more and more employers are cutting off employee access to chat-type sites.

I have noticed when in the room there is a room full of people you come in and say hi and one of two things happens. You say hi and no one responds or people say hi and then nothing in the open room. You can be talking and all of a sudden the room goes slent and you assume everyone is PM-ing. THe room is empty alot and although there are times that you can get a conversation in there it seems its few and far between. I initially thought ok, perhaps I said something to piss off people that no one let me know about, but then a few other people said they have experienced this also. Was there a falling out in the room that caused people to leave or limit their time in the chat room? Is it just a cycle? I would be interested to know peoples opinions.

OooOoOO good questions, Ruth. I noticed this same thing myself....but just tend to leave when it happens. I don't go to chat as often either but because of this problem. If there isn't a lot happening in there, then why go?

Yeah, you didn't do anything wrong Ruffie. I've noticed it too. Drag somebody in there with you and get a good convo going. See what happens.

I've been wondering what's going on myself. Very few people and no conversation among those that ARE there. Kinda eerie.

I think part of the low numbers is a seasonal thing....now that the weather is getting better in a large part of the country, people are getting out and shaking off cabin feaver...it happens a bit every spring in all the chats I've ever been in.
The conversation thing is a bit different...but not unlike going in a crowded bar or restaurant...lots of people talking, but each to a relative few people, in more or less private conversations. The private conversations take attention away from what's going on in the venue as a whole. The closer the relationship between individuals, the more likely for private attention taking conversation. There has recently been a couple major get togethers, where people formed those closer relationships, so for now there is going to be more of those attention taking private conversations.
At least that's my take on it <shrug>

I don't know if this point has been expressed, but I think it's mainly about patience and participation. You can't expect a room to fill up with people if you silently poke in and leave because there are none or five. Stay and be patient. Be sociable. It doesn't take as much time as you'd think, and if you're on a tight schedule, what the Hell are you doing in chat, anyway? Ask people open-ended questions. If you spend the whole time complaining about your work or only monumental sociological problems (that can't be resolved with talk) and you have no intention of undertaking any action so that it becomes just idle bitching, talking about yourself oblivious to anyone else's responses, or asking closed questions (yes or no questions), it will get tedious and people will start doing other things away from the screen to keep busy or they will just leave. Consider that friend/s you have offline who constantly complain/s, same idea. You usually can't wait to hang up with him/them because it grows tiring being around a pessimistic person. If you can't immediately pinpoint that person in your social circle, sit back and examine how many dark and personal issues you broach in chat. Seriously, focus on the positives more and quit bumming us out. lol
Another thought is this: there's not really any time when conversation gets better based solely upon number of people --- it sometimes just gets "louder, " IE: more idle white noise like scrolling and "lol"s
Not necessarily about quantity as it is about quality.

I go into chat so rarely these days, and the other night when I did I took it down a decidedly nerdy/adult route that some people tired of. Then I got the 20 questions from someone that would have been better served as offline PMs vs. public chatter, but go figure.
It was unusual, since when I do go in I get very geeky and start talking sci-fi and Legos and whatnot. The guy who does nothing but post song lyrics (who I think is secretly a bot) wasn't there, so I felt kinda sad.
Chatrooms have ebbs and flows like anything else.

wait a minute why have I not received this text question???? has it finally happened??? am i really obsolete and outta the loop???
*faints and dies in a dramatical fashion*
yes i realize i said dramatical.
So anyways , back to the topic at hand....Chat has seemed rather dead in the daytime hours as of late but as Conrad said, alot of employers are cracking down and Zandoz made a good point of it being a seasonal issue. In short I think that a bunch of factors are really bringing down the numbers but with patience as sharleen mentioned it should be something that can be resolved.

Yep, that's why I don't go into chat any more. I miss Spark in chat.
Chat mods, consider letting my girl here back in, and I'll stop boycotting the chat room.............really. Reconsider, I have street cred.
