I'm pretty sure that Texas counts as the south. Really, it should have it's own forum, I guess. People here still seem pretty proud of it once being its own Republic.
Anyway, I'm going to school in Austin (this is my first week!) and am from Chicago. Would love to hear from fellow Austin/Texas/anywhere inhabitants, I suppose.

Welcome to Texas. If my business didn't have me tied here, I'd live in Austin in a heartbeat, easily the hippest town on the planet. I'm just a little south of San Antonio, so I enjoy the whole Austin, San Marcos, San Antonio, Corpus Christi corridor.. south Texas rules.
I agree though, Texas needs its own little forum. We're not the south or the midwest.. more midsouth. Heh.

I thought I'd posted in this thread, but apparently not until now. I'm a native born Texan. Been here nearly all my life. Hubby and I live in a little town just east of Abilene. I did notice that most all of you are in South Texas - Houston, Austin, San Antonio. If ya'll ever make your way to Abilene, PM me, I'd love to meet ya!

Hi Katrina!
Just saw your post. Abilene is a nice place for the most part. There are many opportunities for education as we have 3 Universities, a couple of Jr. College extension campus', West Texas Technology College, a beautician school and a few nursing programs. Downtown is very quaint, and kept up. There is seldom a rush hour! There are a few downsides though: pay scale is below what the bigger cities bring in (i.e. Ft. Worth/Dallas metro), it is windy a lot, if you don't like hot weather - that would be bad 'cause we have lots, gang activity is on the rise - get with a realtor to get the lowdown on better apartment neighborhoods. We have several really good restaurants. I don't know much about night clubs, however, you'll find more country/cowboy type places than anything else. There is the Grace Museum downtown, an old fashioned Paramount Theater, Frontier Texas, and the Abilene Zoo. Abilene is a very giving city, there are several volunteer events to help the homeless, Children's Miracle Network, make a wish Foundation, food drives, Ben Richey's Boy's Ranch and many other charitable functions. Of this I am very proud. Most people in Abilene are hard working, honest folk and Abilene's slogan is "The Friendly Frontier". I see little in size discrimination in Abilene. Lots of BBW's in Abilene and quite a few BHM's too. And...there is a Russell Stover's outlet - what more could you want! tee hee! If you have any more questions, I'd be happy to help you out - just PM me.

Check out KBCY (http://www.kbcy.com) to see information about which Texas Country Band will be showing when you come for a visit.

Richardson is near Dallas. I don't know about Richardson as far as things to do, but I imagine you could hop over to Dallas to the Arboretum. It depends on what you wanna do. I believe Fall Festival or Fright Night at Six Flags in Arlington is going on now. Hope you have fun!

OMGosh I was /thrilled/ when they opened an Aldi store in Mesquite this spring! I have to stop there every time I come into the city . . . and the package store too, as I live in a "dry county".

I've lived in Chandler (somewhere near tyler), Arlington, in Kingwood, which is about 30 minutes north of Houston, and now reside in the boonies, 45 minutes or so north of San Antonio. I'm between SA and New Braunfels. If anyone would like to hang out or go do something, i'm extremely open! I have no friends yet. ): I love meeting new people!

For anyone around the Houston area, new to the area or not, because I know a lot of people don't leave the city or urban areas. Go on out to the forests, cypress forest, Sam Houston forest is beautiful. And I don't mean just go look from the pavement, take a dirt road, get yourself back in there and see it. A lot of people in Texas never stop to see our beautiful forests. They are literally one of a kind. It's the kind of beauty you see in a story book, like a fairy tale.
