Folsom Street Fair this Sunday - http://folsomstreetfair.org/fair-info.php
Lovefest on Oct. 4 - http://www.sflovefest.org/
Hardly Strictly Bluegrass Festival from Oct. 3 - 5 (Gogol Bordello is playing on Sunday!) - http://www.strictlybluegrass.com/

Kayrae,
My wife and I were both born in The City and lived in the Bay Area when we were young. We visit relatives up there about twice a year (December will probably be the next time we go up there... we now live in So. Cal...)
Seriously, I'll give advanced notice the next time we come to visit and post it here. It would be fun to meet with you or a group of SF-Dimmers somewhere near one of the BART stations (Powell St. / West Field Mall perhaps...?), or somewhere near where we can easily take a cable car from BART. My daughter and I rode the BART last July, I'll talk to Mtmaiden (my wife) and see if she'd also like to come. (She wanted to visit the mall next time...)

Sure. Post a reply on this thread when you're in the area. Hopefully by that time, we've gathered some more willing SF Bay Area DIMs members. I focused mostly on San Francisco because:
1. It's where I live and I don't own a car. And BART stops running after midnight. I vehemently oppose getting stuck anywhere. Cabs are priiiiiicey!
2. The ratio of BBW to Skinnies slants more on the Skinny side in SF. Next to Marin County, this city was ranked 2nd skinniest city in the nation on Money Magazine, which is owned by CNN. I would love to build some relationships with the ladies, so we can go shopping together and give each other tips on plus-size stores and fashion in general. This girl needs some honest fatty feedbacks on her outfits!!
3. I want to have as much fun as all the other cities with meet-ups! I'm willing to host :)
So ladies and gents, that's my essay on why you should hang out with me. Besides the obvious fact that I'm super awesome.

I've been wanting to go to the bay area to look up a famous BBW in Oakland because I promised her some cheesecake and she promised to show me the redwood forest years ago when we were playing Halo 2 on Xbox Live. But she might not appreciate it, which is almost a reason to do it.

I am over here in the Southern Hills part of Frisco, right on the Daly City Border, I am....despite my horrendous work schedule I do retain some small social life. I have been trying to get some sort of meetup type event in the actual City rather than across the Bay for years...last time that happened was when NAAFA SFBayArea was meeting at the Girth and Mirth Club in the Castro, twenty bazillion eons ago...yes...I am raising my hand..I am over here, I don't drive, but BART and Muni are my good friends! Yay! :D Oh...almost forgot...I am a BHM, so one less skinny person in Frisco! Yaaay!

Always a pleasure to meet you in a thread...been a long time since the Chia-head days! Yes...I still owe Jay West Coast a visit and it would be lovely to meet you when you are in SF! Perhaps you might even visit....THE SANCTUM of CONCATENATION...aka my living room!!! It makes it sound more dramatic, but it is a full scale installation of my ex-wife's artwork...my paintings are down the hall! Could be quite the aesthetic event, eh? Timmy
PS I really promise NOT to read poetry! I do.

Wingdom, I practically work in Daly City. We should definitely arrange something. Do you know of any other SF'ers? I don't really know how to plan one of these things.
Windom Earle
11-03-2008, 05:27 AM
Jay West Coast is definitely around these parts...and I...gulp....was supposed to have a social with him years ago...ran into him on the BART. I think the general idea is start with a couple or three folks and slowly get the ones hiding in the woodworks to come out once they see the happiness and joy of Dimmers meeting Dimmers...there are others around...Santaclear is right across the Bay...Les Toil is over Berkeley way...I would suggest having a coffee meet and greet event somewhere central, like the Cafe' Trieste down on Market and Gough (1667 Market, to be precise)...on a Sunday over the next couple of weeks...I think it would be appropriate for moi to PM the three lads. eh? There are a few SF women, but I am not sure who is still active...that will come in time.

How about a simple, unassuming, modest, coffee oriented meetup just for an ice-breaker? What is a good time for folks? I used to run a Meetup group in SF and I know how hard it is to get everyone in one place at the same time, but we can try to make it as centrally located as possible...near to the BART, Marin and SamTrans lines....BART certainly makes things a lot easier. We can certainly branch out on field trips to Sacto and such as we see who miight be interested...any thoughts? The long Veteran's day weekend might be an option...I am working that Saturday at the clinic so that I can take Monday off...so I will have three glorious days in a row! :smitten:

The Muddy Waters Coffee House at 521 Valencia Street, one block up from the 16th Street BART station, passing two small alleys on the way: Hoff Street and Rondel Place....
http://sanfrancisco.citysearch.com/profile/889542/san_francisco_ca/muddy_waters_coffee_house.html
Review from citysearch:
"The coffee is so strong you could cut it with a knife--and at this no-frills local stalwart, straight up is way more popular than any complicated barista coffee concoction. Regulars tend to linger, reading the paper and talking over steaming mugs and pastries. Low prices and a broken-in ambiance keep the wobbly chairs pretty full, but the crowd is neither intimidating or exclusive--just honest, caffeinated and wide-eyed"
There are, of course, non-caffeinated beverages for those who might want to go to sleep eventually! I choose this place because it is the traditional meeting and meet-up spot in San Francisco and is dead smack in the center of an area crawling with restaurants and transportation along the Mission Street Corridor. Parking is problematic, so public transport is usually easier...what time would we be thinking? I am perfectly groovy with doing it in the evening per Russ' suggestion....those looking for dinner could also be accomodated...

Windom Earle
11-07-2008, 05:33 AM
It's not that far from San Francisco to Sacramento...about 70 miles and then another 50 to Placerville. I always had the impression it was up there near the Oregon border...I needs to take me on a road trip! California is so large but I forget that most of the cities tend to cluster around a few major hubs. We have folks that commute 70 miles a day to come into SF to work...who knew?

We had a great time and it was such a nice experience to meet new folks and actually meet a couple of Dims old-timers in the flesh...Jay West Coast, Norcal Teddybear and Santaclear were there, as were Kayrae and two of her friends...it was just a wonderful little event. We did plan to meet every once in awhile and hopefully some more folks will be able to make it next time. We will be travelling as a group over to Oakland for SocialBFly's December dinner next month, as will be announced in that thread. As is often the case in SF down on Valencia Street, I ran into one of the chaps that I play guitar with...so Jay and Russ were also able to meet the fabled Lord Kenne, King of all Mystical Scotland! Unfortunately, with all what has happened the last couple of weeks (my sister's passing away...) Mtmaiden, Jr. and I are going to spend Christmas time with my mom here in SoCal this year so we won't be able to make it to SF. I wouldn't rule out an impromptu weekend trip sooner or later though, with a weeks notice before. I'll definitely post here if and when that happens. It would be fun to make a BART walking distance meet-up in SF at some point.

Fascinita, what part of the Bay area will you be staying in?

Kayrae, I'm not sure yet. I'll have more details as the trip gets closer. But either way I'd love to meet up in the City for some official Dims Holiday Cheer (TM), if a group of us can swing it. But I can travel to meet y'all wherever a "happening" happens, too. :)

I'm sorry I missed this event. I'd definitely like to come to the next meet & greet.

I'm down for shopping. It's always fun with a group. People's input are always a plus to have when picking out clothes. Hope to meet up with you. When ever it works for you and Kayrae and anyone else.
