I'm never stuck on cup size. I suggest trying on a 44C, 42D, 42C, and mess around with different styles of bras. I sometimes spend 2 hours trying on different bras at Lane Bryant! Push up, underwire, no underwire, comfort fit, soft cup... they go on and on. And LB will do buy 2 get 1 free specials, too.
I know that frustration as a guy, of trying to help your gal with finding the right bra.
From your name it sounds like you are probably in college, so buying from Lane Bryant or other specialty stores might be somewhat prohibitive, but getting one or two from there could be good--at least that way she can find out what a good fitting bra is.
But in general....I can't believe I'm going to suggest this.....Walmart. Don't buy the super cheap, generic brand, ones, as from what I've seen/heard they do not normally hold up well. But they will have all the main brands, at better prices than you'll find elsewhere. If she needs help in trying stuff on, first try going to Sears some day when they have a special on--they still won't be as cheap as Walmart, but not too bad, and they should be able to help her with trying things on. Then she can buy a couple, see how she likes them, then send you off to Walmart with the model number to buy her more :-)

wait till she gets to a 42 DD or DDD!! Lordy. Yeah I feel the pain. Its expensive and hard to fit boobs these sizes. Most stores don't have even up to 42 backsize half the time. I suggest waiting for sales at lane bryants and such stores of the like. She'll find some pretty ones if you look around enough! :D

Hello Boys!
If you read some of the other 'Bra' related threads you'll realise that Bra's are really REALLY hard to get a perfect fit first time.
I just wanted to say - please dont beat yourselves up if you dont manage to get it right - she is SO going to appreciate the fact that you tried :)
I admit I'm in a soppy mood right now but I've got major warm and fuzzy feelings because of the effort that you're putting in here. Well done!!

Ebay, if you can find the brand that currently fits her. They are generally a good deal cheaper there.

Well, I only buy new ones with tags. I am not sure used bras are sold on Ebay. I would not want a used one either. There are lots of new ones still in the plastic packaging though.
Women's clothing is one of the most competitive categories on Ebay. THis results in excellent deals.

At 42D, she should still be able to find something. That's about what I wore in junior high.
Besides Lany Bryant, I discovered a few other catalogs over the years, including Lady Grace (which kind of specializes in bras ), and my husband discoverd Junonia. Give these a try.

I have a girlfriend (48DDD), who swears by the brand Breezies, and she purchases them from QVC, they MAY only go to a 48, but she loves them!
Good luck!

Ouch, I struggle too.
My other half's a 34G, not big around the chest, but huge cupwise.G seems pretty impossible to find in normal shops, and the ones she finds are really more of an E or so, since i always find theyre too small for her. (she won't go to any specialists for some reason- scared of not being "normal" i think. Personally, i think she's just *fine*)

You know, I always wondered what a $150 dollar bra looked like.
Now I know. http://www.biggerbras.com/empreinte-bras-empreinte-luxury-clothing-large-size-luxury-clothing.shtml
I was looking around for a good sports bra -- sans uniboob -- and landed on the above site. I saw what looked like a pretty bra, clicked, and voila. What on earth could make a bra so special that it's worth that kind of money???
Can the fashion mavens clue me in???

I wear a 40J, so I feel her pain. ;) I buy my bras from Decent Exposures...

I buy the front closure lined cotton lycra, and they are supportive, as well as comfortable, and they last forever. They custom make the bras for you so you can send them back as many times as you need to get the fit right, and then they keep your measurements/patterns on file so they will make them for your any time you order. Great company - great customer service.

I'm definitely not defending Empreinte here, they're not a make I choose to carry, but...
The UK imposes quotas and import taxes on anything imported from the US into the UK and if I purchase in the US to sell on my site I have to add on 17.5% plus shipping, handling and admin fees. I would imagine all of these fees are similar for this seller when importing from Europe (where Empreinte are manufactured) into the US too.
Also, the exchange rates affect any purchase of items originally priced in Euro's or Pounds Sterling which makes them much more expensive to people buying in US Dollars. It's not something that we ordinary mortals can control, and the extra money certainly isn't profit for the sellers, but it does greatly affect the price paid.
Empreinte are a luxury brand to start with and if you add on all the fees and costs and then factor in the exchange rate I guess I can understand why it adds up and then looks so expensive to US buyers.
Now I've said all of that though - they aren't nearly as luxurious as the brand I carry! Lol - sorry, couldnt resist.

Ugh...I took at look at that sight. Those bras are very pretty, but the straps are so narrow, I'd never last an hour.
The Decent Exposures look interesting, though.

Yeah they sure are pretty, aren't they? And Tracey, thanks for sharing the info about why they could be expensive. They're very lovely but I don't think I could spend that much on a bra that I couldn't at least try on first.
In fact, that leads me to my next promise. I won't buy another bra -- sports or otherwise -- until I get properly fitted. So I'm trying to work up my courage to head to Nordstrom's and get fitted. (groan, whine, stomping feet). Since my weight loss I have NO idea what size I truly wear. My shape has changed entirely, so I'm going to get fitted -- for the first time in my life -- properly.

You go for it Miss Vickie! :) Be brave and take the plunge. Nothing is better for the morale than a well fitting, comfortable, pretty bra. It will do wonders for your shape and your mood!
If it helps at all - I measure all shapes and sizes at the Studio and the only things I think about when I'm wielding the tape measure is writing the numbers down correctly. Although I do obviously have to look at peoples bodies I dont really 'look' if that makes sense? I know sometimes my customers are nervous but after you've done a job like this for a while you've seen almost every size, shape, skin tone, scar etc and us tape measure ladies are pretty much unshockable.
Seriously - go for it, and dont forget to report back on your new haul of pretty frillies :)

Thanks, Tracey. Already, just finding the Vanity Fair bras I love has been a huge boost. They're underwire, with molded cups, both things I swore I'd never wear. But the underwire in front is really low (I guess you call that plunge?) which is great because it stays in place and doesn't make me feel like it's going to go up my nose, and the molded cups are very comfortable. Before, when I'd wear underwires, the wire would either sneak out and poke me (ouch!) or else it would sit far out from my chest and poke at my shirt. I tried several different permutations of cup and band size, and never could seem to get it right. But I love these bras; I just want some pretty patterns to go with the six colors I have them in so I want to branch out and try other manufacturers. They're going to have a rough time being as comfy as what I'm wearing, but I'm willing to give it a go.

As an obstetrical nurse, I can say it makes sense completely. I "look" at women's vaginas, vulvas and breasts, but I don't really "look" other than in a clinical sense. And like you, I've seen a LOT of different pieces parts, so I'm pretty unflappable. So yeah, I know what you mean. And even knowing that, I'm weird about people seeing me without a bra on. It's just a "thing".
