i come here to seek your knowledge.
my computer is having problems reading dvd's and cd's. first it was the dvd's. some times the computer was able to play them, some times it wasn't, or it would freeze halfway through a movie. i thought it was because i was trying to play scratched dvd's from the public library. it got progressively worse. these days, if it is able to start the dvd -scratched or not- , the best it can do is freeze halfway through.
i could still read cd's though until this week. i tried to rip an audio book for my player and it would not read the disk. i tried other disks and it won't read them. except tom waits "orphans brawlers, bawlers & bastards". (the bawlers cd). i am not kidding. for some reason that is the only cd it can read.
it occurred to me that there might be a problem with the software for the player so i decided to uninstall it. of course when i tried to install it again i had to try a couple of times until the computer read it.
anypoo. no clue whats going on. any theories?

I am not a computer wizard by any means but a similar thing happened to my laptop a couple of months back. It will still write cds but will not play any cds or dvds without freezing or being really stoppy-starty. Turns out my cd drive itself is buggered. As it's built in to my laptop, it was not replaceable, but I bought an external cd drive for about £30 and that works a treat.

Almost certainly a hardware issue. Optical drives are precision instruments that have to determine, with absolute certainty, whether any spot on an optical disc, be it a CD or a DVD, represents a logical one or a logical zero. Millions and millions of them, and if they get one wrong, play may come to a halt. So, unfortunately, your best bet is replacing the drive.

thats of what i was afraid of.
all the computer diagnostics say the drive is working well so i was hoping against hope for a software situation. but yeah its probably a hardware situation.
thank you wise people!

i installed my webcam but now the computer won't read the mp3 player. i connect it but it just won't read it. something happened to the usb port. its like the webcam took sole possession of the thing and won't allow anything else. ideas?

I'm an unterNerd. I certainly don't know. But I think you have either the makings of a poem here, or a Stephen King story.
