I can walk for long periods of time but I do have a slow and steady pace. Is there any interest in a "low impact" walking group for people who want to improve their endurance or level of activity without fear of judgement or ridicule? If so, please private message me if you're in the nyc area particularly in the Bronx.

I think that's a great idea, I hope you get some takers! :)

This is open to all fat people, of all ages, abilities, genders etc. I don't discrminate! Walking by yourself is quite boring. Don't be afraid.

I'd so walk with you if I didn't live all the way in the boonies. Good luck!

I want to add this is different from the urban adventure group. It's just strictly walking! I think I'll do a post on craigslist and see the response too.

Great Idea, Jillian!

I'd join you, but I can't walk for long periods of time right now.
If I walk too far, I get cranky.

Awesome! I hope this takes off. Consider walking in a cemetery (during daylight hours). It's usually peaceful, interesting, quiet, safe (generally speaking) and the paths wind gently and are asphalt, not sidewalks/bricks which can trip you. Where I live, many of our sidewalks are well over 100 years old and original and I've taken a few flying leaps in my time. I introduced a friend to cemetery walking and she's down with it.

The point of the group is for all levels. I don't mind taking breaks if someone needs it. I don't want anyone to be excluded because of this!

When and where will you be walking?

I was thinking of historic Woodlawn cemetery. I'm not sure of a date or time or day, must get my schedule worked out.

Well after walking a mere one city block and then up the stairs of the Chevys I was about to pass out. All the more reason I think I should be interested in walking more.

you need to work on your barn yard animal sounds a bit more dearie. next time, put some passion into it!

so I'm thinking of a walk on the weekend, in early june, perhaps around the 11th or 12th at either Woodlawn Cemetery in the Bronx or Wave Hill, also in the Bronx.

Amen. I terrify the local cows on my walks by hopping down near fences to hug their little babies. Now that makes for passionate mooing.

Greenwood is one of the most beautiful cemeteries in Brooklyn.
It's also "hilly".

If you want to head out of the city for a treat there is Glen Island Park on the Long Island Sound in New Rochelle...non Westchester County residents would need to park outside of the park which would add to the experience and also there is the Kensico Dam area up in Valhalla. North Salem has the Muscoot Farm Preserve which is lovely.
As for the cemetery route...Woodlawn in the Bronx has loads of really interesting musoleums and headstones of celebrities from all walks of life, as does the Kensico Cemetery, near the Dam in Valhala, just north of the North White Plains train station of the Metro North Harlem Division. Both are quite hilly.

Heading even further north is Bear Mountain State Park and Franklin Roosevelt Park. Of course, my favorite is West Point... gorgeous views of the Hudson and where many artists of the Hudson River School of Painting got their inspiration for their art. All of these are not that well traveled and thus nasty comments will not likely be garnered...and they are all safe.

Oops didn't notice your post for some reason...sorry to have repeated some information and left out Wave Hill. BTW, as I understand it there will be some lectures at Wave Hill on cooking with fresh herbs on Wednesdays in June at 6:30PM. Might make for an interesting after walk activity. However, I don't know what the seating is like.

I have evening classes four days a week othewise I would've gone to that lecture.

The seating at wave hill is decent. There are armless chairs everywhere. When you take a walk around the actual garden grounds, there are some benches but mostly uncomfortable wooden armed chairs that are low to the ground.

I know I mentioned this back and june and since then not a peep. I hope to plan some walks when the weather is cooler. Fall is a great time to walk around!

My friend, who is the Team Leader for her breast cancer walk, is leading a 12 mile training walk tomorrow afternoon in the heat and humidity of West Philadelphia. God love her and the women coming out to walk with her b/c man oh man, I can't even imagine it. No wonder I just keep contributing money--I don't have the balls to do the harder work!!

I could walk with you, but I'm in central PA. But I'd love to walk with you! I can't find anyone to walk with me except my husband who is 6'2" and I can't keep up with that. I've had several surgeries on my feet and calves, so I can't walk like I used to. Not yet anyway. :)

Yeah....

I'll walk.

There are many nice areas to walk by the Bronx River Parkway in the Bronx, and Westchester.

Also, Van Cortlandt Park offers many nice areas to walk.
