Of all the food combinations available both in the kitchen, and in fast food; the meal I crave most is the hamburger.
And of all the fast food burgers available in any community, and of all the different ones I've had, or have yet to buy; I always fall back to an all time favorite.
The McDonalds Cheeseburger. Just the right amount of cheese, pickles, mustard, onion and ketchup. I tend to buy them buy the bag, but even if I can scratch up the change in my car to buy just one, I'll do it.
I might just do anything for that cheeseburger.

I'll take a good burger over a steak any day of the week and yet, I haven't been to any of your well known burger joints in about ten years.
I've gone once each time to 3 "strictly Seattle" institutions : Dick's, Hamburger Mary's (no longer existant), and Red Mill Burgers.
Red Mill was by far the best!

For the best burger's in the world, my vote goes with Cassell's Hamburgers
3266 W. Sixth St. (Berenbo St.)
Los Angeles, CA 90020
213-480-8668
Just that one location. Here's what some reviewer's have to say.
"You’ll have to stand in line with the local pinstripe-suit crowd to order what many call the best hamburger in town: a simple, large hamburger made with freshly ground beef, a huge bun, homemade mayonnaise and fresh lettuce, tomatoes and pickles. No décor, no ambience---just great burgers."
No other place comes close.
My second choice would be the Original Tommy’s World Famous Hamburgers
They have a great chili burger. There is no seating, either you stand outside or eat in your car. Standing is recommended as Tommy's is just down the block from the famous Rampart's police station and often there are wild happenings on the street. There are a number of Tommy's locations, but I recommend the original on Beverly.
2575 W. Beverly Blvd, Los Angeles, CA 90057

Here in Little Rock, I haven't sampled a whole lot of places. The best I've found is The Purple Cow which creates some good burgers. But the Purple Cow is best known for their chocolate shakes. The chain, Chili's is good too.

MMMMM, I love hamburgers. I don't care for McDonalds though. The only time I really eat fast food burgers is at Burger King, and then it is a Texas Double Whopper (2 patties, cheese, jalapenos, lettuce, mustard, pickles - extra mustard and pickles). I'd never eat ketchup on a hamburger  and I don't eat mayonnaise at all.
I love Krystals, but we don't have them here.
I'm partial to the burgers at Red Robin, and the ones at the bowling alley where I go to watch the games on Saturday aren't bad either. Nothing beats one cooked on the grill at home though.

I prefer hamburger to steak. A perfect burger is topped with mayo, ketchup, sharp cheddar, raw onions, lettuce and tomato. Kaiser rolls are preferable but I'll eat a potato roll in an instant. Now I will list the 3 best burgers I ever ate:
1) Carmody's , Bennington Vermont: Right ratio of fat to meat, it was juicy and a bit charred on the outside. All the condiments were top notch. And when I said medium rare, it was prepared medium rare!
2) Pizzeria Uno, Yonkers NY: Who would think you could thing a good burger at this chain restaurant? I hate their pizza and was forced to go. I expected a servicble burger but again it was very juicy and well seasoned. Blah fries thuogh.
3) someplace in Wellfleet, MA: The man who cooked it took pride in his burgers. Served with grilled onions and sharp cheddar and bbq sauce. He kept asking "Is it good, is it good?" and yes it was.
honorable mention: white castle. Sure they're tiny grease bombs but I like them. I'm full for awhile but always am hungry after eating them.

My vote has to go for the Whopper with cheese from Burger king. I order mine (usually 2) with extra cheese, mayo & onions..to me there is not another burger like it around...
Okay..now I'm hungry....lol

There's almost nothing better than a good cheeseburger. Best burger I've ever had was off my brother's backyard grill. He'd put steak seasoning from Costco in 'em, and I ate 'em topped with cole slaw. Damn near couldn't stop. Other good ones...
Jackson Hole on Second Avenue, Manhattan (the original's in Queens, near LaGuardia Airport).
NoHo Star at Lafayette and Bleecker. Not big enough, but high quality, and great toppings like bacon with Stilton.
Fatburger in LA, mainly for the novelty of eating a burger with a fried egg on it.
Aggie's on West Houston had a good burger, rough-edged and served on amazing Challah.
Then sometimes nothing but a McD's Quarter Pounder with Cheese will do. Or making them at home with lots of lemon-pepper and Worcestershire.
The burger at the Corner Cafe in the West Village always gets a lot of press, but I haven't a clue why. And as much as I love the nearly departed time machine McHale's on 46th and Eighth, their burger isn't as good as it's cracked up to be. It's just big. People too often confuse the two.
Does anybody remember the fast food chain Champs? I'm sure they wouldn't hold up under my more discerning adult scrutiny, but BOY did I love those burgers as a kid. I think they used potato rolls and Thousand Island dressing.

But Corner Bistro is my favorite NYC burger, and I think Jackson Hole's versions are too big, sloppy and way greasy. Agreed on McHale's, though. I used to work near there and a few deluded coworkers loved it. Also agreed that too-big burgers are a plague - 6 ounces makes a perfect size to hold.
Paul's on 2nd ave (off St. Marks) is also no great shakes. Their burgers are alright (as are their many toppings) but the buns have obviously been frozen during their lifetime - all crumbly and dry. Their service is also, shall we say, brisk. On the not-too-big front, two historic bars have the best: Cedar Tavern on University and Old Town on 19th (btwn B'way and Park South).
Best burgers I ever had were out of NYC: A "beefalo" burger in Vermont (can't remember the place but it was in Manchester), and one at the Irma Hotel in Cody, Wyoming. It's Wyoming state law that a burger can't be served less than medium-well (I swear - two waitresses told me), so I was a little bummed out, but the thing was so good I didn't care. It was almost good enough to forgive Wyoming for giving us Dick Cheney.

JG Melons on 73rd street and 3rd also has great, perfectly sized burgers and good fries that are cut like crinkly round carrot slices. You also get the morbidly fascinating spectacle of 60ish divorcees nursing martinis at the bar while trying to catch the eyes of 70ish rich guys. The Upper East Side is underrated for it's wierdness.

On this topic, has anyone ever gotten a Micey D's or BK burger that was actually HOT? I've mostly given up on fast food (except for bimonthly trips to White Castle, comfort food from my youth), and helping that decision was the fact that nearly every time I went to one, the food I received was not just not-hot but room temperature or cold. Doesn't this bother anyone else, or do fast food workers just not like me?

I've only been to the location on 3rd ave and 35th and I so agree. It's just too big and eating a big pile of grease. Cumbersome is a good word to describe their burgers. Their wings are terrible too!

The only Corner Bistro burger I've had was screamingly mediocre, but maybe they were having a bad day. Or perhaps I was. Jackson Hole has slipped a wee bit lately, but I've learned to go easy on the tempting-but-unmanageable toppings, and order the bun on the side, so it doesn't get soggy before you eat it. It's the perfect size for me (I like to be groaning by the end), and yes, it's greasy. I like it greasy.
Corner Bistro is otherwise a great place, as is McHale's (across the street is my favorite NYC watering hole, Collins Bar), but I skip the burgers.
I'm always lured into getting game burgers whenever I see 'em on the menu (buffalo, ostrich), but find they're never juicy enough for me.
About McDonald's burgers not being hot, most non-Mickey D's food arrives too hot for me, so I'm no judge. I'm a total pussy about food temperature, and believe it tastes better once it's cooled a bit, anyway.
JG Melons is next on my list. Someone recently rated theirs the best.

Murphy's is also on the UES, over by the hospitals on 70th between 1st and York. It's a generic Irishish bar up front with TVs but the food is surprisingly good in back.
As far as JG Melons, space is tight so go early lunchtime (noon) for a more relaxed experience. It gets packed. The stuff with the old people flirting doesn't get going til dinner, though.

I'm right there about once a week. I'll check it out. And did you see that Hi-Life has closed? That whole block's been gobbled up. Wouldn't be surprised if it's Sloan-Kettering. They're giving NYU a run for their money where real estate's concerned.

You need to "special order" so you get one that is made up hot and fresh. I ask for no ketchup, or no pickles. Something like that. They can't give you one that is already made up and starting to congeal. Hot and fresh - Never fails! (but still a fast food burger. lol)
I do like BK's double cheeseburger, plain. I like the taste of the meat. But it isn't my ideal burger, just good enough in a pinch.
I used to love the burgers at the chain "Charlie Brown's". They were angus beef with a real charcoal-grilled flavor. That was years ago, though. Now they are ordinary. I wish there was an awesome burger nearby. I am sad. :(
That said...I think my favorite local burger (tho still not quite awesome) is the Jack Daniel's burger at Fridays. Yeah, a chain. Imagine that.

Yes, I'm enough of a food whore to have a different restaurant for everything thing I eat. Hi-Life had good black bean soup, too, and for the quality I thought the place was very cheap. Some of the staff were a little too uppity for their own good, but I could ignore that. Never tried their burgers, though. Alas.
You people are killing me.
I'm taking a new medication and it makes me hungry. Hungry like the wolf. Hungrier than a bitch wolf with nine pups a-suckin'! And I want to eat every single thing you've all described. Right now.
Of course, I could just ignore these posts, but it IS lunchtime (and I'm eating good homemade cheddar/potato/broc. soup)

No really, they're always cold and floppy. Who wants to eat a floppy burger?

Damn y'all, now I'm craving my favorite burgers and they are nowhere near! For fast food, I'm addicted to krystals. For fresh burgers, there is this hole in the wall place in north Atlanta called Rhea's. Their 'special' is on texas toast with absolutely everything on it and they have the best fries.

Fuddrucker's makes a pretty good burger, that you can dress up wit all kinds of toppings. It was one of the few places I ever took my son to when he was a teenager that he would leave full.

They used to be everywhere. I was taught to love my veggies as child and the fixins bar was like manna from heaven. I piled on the lettuce, tomato, pickles and onions. I would even make a side salad to eat. I remember their burgers being quite tasty. The only RR's I see these days are dusty old rest stop versions. Maybe my palate has expanded or they are truly bad now.

When I used to travel to areas with a Roy Rogers, I was fond of getting what I believe was called a Double R Bar Burger, a burger topped with roast beef (!) and barbecue sauce. Heartstopping. Literally.

My dad used to take me to Chili’s down on Lower Greenville Road in Dallas TX. I think this might have been the original. The burgers were huge and they were known for the Kitchen Sink Burger, had a little bit of everything on it and it was a big surprise to lift the top bun and see what was there. Very simple fare back then, fries and burgers served in baskets and lots of cold beer. The chain version is similar.. but not the same as the ones from my memories
The chain, Chili's is good too.

Actually, the Double R Bar Burger was topped with ham. They also sold a roast beef sandwich.
Back in the '70s. I used to go to Roy Rogers with my co-workers quite often. We would refer to the Double R Bar Burger as a "Triggerburger with a dead pig riding sidesaddle".

There was a place outside of Richmond, VA called "Home of the Mega-Burger"
They made each burger with 4lbs. of beef on a regular sized bun.
If you could eat it all in a specified amount of time, it was free!

I LOVE BURGERS. It's what I want when I go out to dinner, I joke with the date and say I'm cheap date. I don't go for the lobster and Steak much. I just think there is nothing better then a juicy cheese burger with lettuce tomato bacon red onion sliced super thin with mayo and ketchup and a pickle if the spirit moves me. I have yet to find the "best" burger outside the walls of my kitchen, but I love looking for it.
