So what does everyone think of tomorrow's date? I think it is much ado about nothing.
There are 2 great books coming out: the latest in the Left Behind series (GREAT reads!!) and Godless by Ann Coulter.
There is a big party in Hell, Michigan. Some pray-ins at some churches.
And the opening of the latest Omen movie.
I found it interesting that the current interest rate on 30-year home mortgages is 6.66% and that some think the apocolypse is tomorrow.
I know for a fact that it isn't.:)

The same way I KNEW George Bush won the election on election nite 2000 and 2004. I celebrated both times in HUGE ways.
The same way I had a horrendous sense of doom before 911.
Call it intuition, the Holy Spirit, whatever you want. I just knew.
And I just know about tomorrow. The whole 06-06-06 is just too obvious. And the Bible says we will be raptured in an instant. There will be no warning.
I do think 666 in the Bible is the "mark of the beast." But I think the whole 666thing tomorrow is nothing.

Heh. I find it amusing as well that some people are predicting the apocalypse. Besides the fact that the apocalypse described in Revalation takes place over quite a long time... (what are people predicting specifically for tomorrow? The rapture? The antichrist to come forth?). Nah, too many people are expecting it, that's not how it's gonna go down.
I will say that everything does seem to be coming together for the end of the world... but it's not gonna be tomorrow.
[edit] HappyFatChick - what's your opinion of pre- and post-tribulation rapture theories? I honestly don't lean toward either due to lack of sufficient evidence for one or the other, though I do agree with what you said, that nobody's gonna see it coming or be prepared for it.

I do want to see the Omen, it looks creepy, and you couldn't have asked for a better date to launch a remake about the son of satan.

Moon- my understanding is that Jesus will "rapture" (take into Heaven) His children (born-again Christians). It will happen in an instant. No one will know about it. Not even the angels. Only God. (I think there's scripture in Matthew
somewhere- 24:36?)
I think the: tribulation, defeat of anti-Christ/Satan, judgement, second coming/millenial reign of Christ, New Jerusalem, and everything in between is certain.
My "opinion" is that I believe everything in Revelations. I know it may sound absurd to some, but I do. I've seen too much to question any part of it.

Even if the number did have some date significance, the fiddling with the calendar in the past, and the relatively modern concept of time zones, would totally throw it off any relevance to our current dating system.
Among other historic fiddlings, Pope Gregory XIII arbitrarily instituted the Gregorian calendar in 1582. The day after October 4, 1582 was October 15.
And just for the record, I doubt the number has any real significance in any way shape or form.

Good grief. Not this again.
I think even most history and biblical scholars agree that numerological system used during Biblical times was not the same as the one we use now. So 666 does not equal the modern number six hundred sixty six. Nor does it point to some future anti-Christ and actually named a then roman enemy of the Jews (whose name escapes me right now).
Besides from what I've read recent discoverys actually translate the number as being 616 anyways.

Oops, sorry, I think I was a little unclear. Everything you said I agree with, I just mean about the timing of the rapture and whether it will happen before or after the tribulation, because it has been a topic of controversy among eschatologists. I was having a discussion with my brother and his friend earlier about it so I was thinking about it when I happened upon this thread.
[edit] And for my take on the whole literal value of the number 666... Whether or not that is the actual value, clearly if it is explicitly stated "there is a specific number of the beast and this is it: ___" there is some purpose behind such a specific statement. However I don't think there is a point in carrying so much fear of a number and to do so is to miss the point - it stands for allegiance to Satan and the Antichrist, and it's that which the symbol stands for rather than the symbol itself that should be feared. Just like pentagrams and inverted crosses have no power but what you allow them to have.

HappyFatChick, be careful not to try to characterize Islam by the actions of a few extremists. I know the news media plays up extreme things as if they were mundane, but most of the Muslims in this world are not wild-eyed terrorists who want to destroy America. There are some in this world who would question whether Christianity is a peaceful religion. This country is led by a group of fanatical right-wing Christians who are prosecuting a war of aggression against a country that never attacked America. I am certain that there are a lot of people in the world who would argue that Christianity is an aggressive religion.
Labels are relative depending on who wants to use them.
As a liberal Christian, I am ashamed of George W. Bush and the other religious conservatives who are running America. They give Christianity a bad name because they refuse to live according to Christ's teachings.

Yep. In fact, I've never heard it from any liberal that I know. What I have heard is discussion about how some of the actions we've taken have made much of the world angry with us, and how our behavior since 9/11 has thrown away a lot of good will. But I don't know anyone who is believable on the left who says we deserved it.
Besides, isn't it possible to love your country while taking enormous umbrage with its actions? Or are we to completely agree 100% with everything our leaders do, because they're our leaders?
That seems a rather simplistic way to approach the world.
Sweet Tooth

As a liberal Christian, I am ashamed of George W. Bush and the other religious conservatives who are running America. They give Christianity a bad name because they refuse to live according to Christ's teachings.
And I as a conservative, but more laissez-faire/libertarian, Christian get upset with this, as well. We can't ignore certain commands just because they're politically unpopular. I am learning more and more, though, that faith and morality are deeply personal. People have to own their own behavior.
Anyway, have you heard of a movement called the Red-Letter Christians? I heard Tony Campolo [one of my favorite Christian ministers and authors who has been lambasted by the Christian right] talk about how how he and some others felt like neither party was doing Jesus' example justice politically. They focus on all the sayings of Jesus [ie. the "red letters" - based on how some Bibles put the words of Jesus in red ink] rather than what's politically popular in a given party.
It's something to look into for those people of faith disenfranchised by the way both political parties pick and choose what they want to follow.

I don't characterize Islam by a few. I characterize it by reading the Koran, studying Islam, and talking to Muslims. My opinion is that Islam is not a "religion of peace" as claimed. I find it wrought with death and terror.
Yes there are extremists in every religion.
But remember, not all Muslims are terrorists but most recent terrorists have been Muslims.
Sweet sassy molassy, but that's flat-out ignorant of all the secular terrorists, Christian terrorists, Jewish terrorists, Hindu terrorists, Maoist terrorists. Do you have some kind of Terror Statistics Central where you're getting constant updates on the religious affiliation of terrorists?
Because I am, and that's not the read I'm getting. The terrorists in the Niger Delta, Uganda, Sri Lanka, Central and Western India, Cabinda, Peru, Colombia, Puerto Rico, Spain, Ireland, Nepal, and a whole bunch of other places ain't Muslim. This is as of yesterday, today, and forever.
I'm not ripping into you for being a conservative Christian Republican woman. I'm not even ripping into you. I'm ripping into that post I quoted because it's disgustingly stupid and ill-informed. Do some actual background reading NOW on a variety of topics, so you'll acutlaly have an informed opinion about them in a few months from now.

I just found it all so interesting that an attack reportedly planned for 6-6-6 was stopped by a group using domestic spying. I know most of the liberals probably hate that.
Oh yeah, we hate it because we'd rather people die than be wrong. That's a very shitty thing to say, and far worse than cussing or doing any of the things you so self-importantly say you don't do. Nasty thing, you are.

I still don't get what Canada "did" to "deserve" this behavior from these innocent members of such "a peaceful religion". And I want to know. I keep hearing how America "deserved" 911 from the radical Muslim and left fringe.
It's because Canada embodies the American dream.

How interesting that you again target Islam. The last major terrorist incident before September 11th was committed by Timothy McVeigh and Terry Nichols, white, Anglo-Saxon supremacists. They certainly were not Muslim, but they killed 167 people. Terrorism is not unique to one religion, my friend. Your postings about Islam indicate profound ignorance about that religion.

HFC, the Koran has *nothing* on the Bible. The entire Old Testament is chock full 'o killing, maiming, God-sanctioned raping & pillaging, incredibly bizarre commandments (like, if a man lies with his mother-in-law or daughter-in-law, kill 'em all -- I guess that God considers being raped a crime too). God orders his followers to slaughter babies, little children, innocent animals. Entire BOOKS in the Bible are dedicated to specific instructions on how to perform ritualistic animal sacrifices to please and appease God. He visits plague upon entire cities, burns others to the ground, and lest we forget, floods the entire earth in order to kill everything alive (except His chosen few). God tells the Israelites to kill every man & child alive (again, aside from his chosen few) ... although he does allow that the women can be kept alive as sex slaves for the conquering army. The Bible very clearly sanctions slavery, and rape, and assorted other acts that today would land you in prison, on death row.
What a hypocrite you are. If you are going to hold Muslims accountable for every bloody, war-mongering and senselessly violent passage in the Koran ... hold YOURSELF to the same standards.

Back when I lived in Seattle and had pagan bumper stickers on my car (something I'd never dare to do here), I used to get all manner of nasty notes, fliers, and comments made about my happyfatpaganself. I always worried that one day it would be much worse. Which is why these days, and living in this town, I don't use them. It's too bad because I love my happypagandance bumper sticker but I just don't dare. I figure the "Love Your Mother Earth" sticker's enough to get me lynched.

I'm not surprised. Many Baptists tend to be superstitious and see the Devil hiding under every doorstep. God is all-powerful, but Baptists talk about the Devil as if he, too were a god.
A lot of people don't know the difference between wicca and satanism. They are confused about what either faith is about. The two faiths don't even use the same pentacle! Satanism uses an inverted pentacle.
But then, you have some Christians who regard non-Christian faiths or non-conservative Christian faiths with disdain and fear. That is why I do not associate with them.

Jon Stewart said it best.
"It's not 6-6-6, it's 6-6-06. And it's not even 6-6-06, it's 6-06-2006! God will not send the four horsemen because of a typo!"
And he's right.
Six has no satanic significance, it's 666 (six-hundred-sixty-six) that's the number of the beast, and that only means something if its tattooed/scarred on your hand or forhead.

Unfortunately, someone did take the date as an occasion to deface a Christian (I think Catholic) shrine in the Milwaukee area. It was on our local news last night (central WI). The misspelling of Satan pretty much answers that. Had the media not been hyping the whole 6-6-6 to death, I doubt their tiny brains would have even thought of it.
Judging by their ages I doubt they will end up doing any serious jail time. Hopefully at least they will have to pay off the damages and will be doing some community service for the next several years.

How dare they spray "Hail Satin" on a religious shrine. Now, it would be a different story if it were "Hail Silk" or "Hail Lace"! :D
On the more serious side, here's a good paragraph from the article:
"I think, overall, people are disgusted by this," he said. But it was one conversation with an elderly Jewish woman that helped Kontny put the desecration in a larger perspective and understand that the damage was not permanent.
"She told me that her Synagogue was spray painted with Nazi graffiti," he said. "This happens, I know. I'm glad that the damage was superficial."

'They' translated wrong. The actual mark of the devil is 616.
Hmm. Citation, please?
(I hope the Greek text will come through OK.)
Apokalypse 13.18: ...
Revelation 13.18: ... for it is the number of a man; and his number is Six hundred threescore and six.
The Latin is from the Vulgate of St. Jerome. The English is from the KJV. The transliterated Greek should work, but the Greek characters with accents will only show up if you have the necessary Unicode fonts, I think.
Hexakosioi hexekonta hex is definitely six hundred sixty-six.
Of course, it was better in the original Klingon.

Well, there's a range of takes on this controversial book. To be sure, it was stuck at the end of the Catholic Epistles because many early Christian leaders doubted its authenticity. The book of Hebrews is at the end of the Pauline Epistles for the same reason, ie, concerns over the legitimacy of the book.
I personally do take the book seriously, but it certainly isn't literal. The usage of symbolism is obvious throughout the epistle. I do have the opinion said book is, in fact, a recording of a divine vision.

I wouldn't describe Happy Fat Chick as scary. I would say she is a true believer. She is paraphrasing the Book of Revelation. I would bet that as a conservative Christian, she probably believes that Revelation describes exactly how the world will be destroyed and people will be judged. Revelation is frightening. It contains the central elements of the conservative Christian worldview: vengeance, violence and destruction of nonbelievers.
As a liberal Christian, I do not take Revelation literally. Jesus Christ is Lord. He will come again, but not necessarily according to how Revelation describes. After all, Revelation was simply meant to be a code for early Christians who were persecuted the evil Roman emperor Nero. Revelation was never meant to be a road map that described how the end of the world would take place. This is just another example of how my conservative co-religionists used a literal analysis to distort biblical meaning. Such a thing often results in some people receiving the wrong teaching and others feeling alienated from Christianity.
You're just... scary.

Man in Bowler: Why hello, ma'am. I've just got the offer of a lifetime today.
Woman: Well, I don't usually favor door-to-door salesmen, but I am a sucker for a well-dressed gentleman. Come on in! What brings you here, stranger?
Man in Bowler: Well, to be honest, I'm interested in your SOUL.
Woman: My soul! Whatever for?
Man in Bowler: Ma'am, I'm known around this corner of the universe as the Anti-Christ. Now, you don't accept Jesus Christ as your saviour or anything like that, do you?
Woman: I'm not sure... Wait though... If I accept him, don't I get eternal happiness?
Anti-Christ: Well, let's take a second to define eternal happiness. No sex, no swearing, no drinking, no hellraising, no more trying to eat entire cheesecakes in one sitting...
Woman: That certainly sounds dreadful to me!
Anti-Christ: Me too! That's why I wish to offer you a position of eternal hedonism.
Woman: But the bible says you're lying.
Anti-Christ: I might well be. But if that's the truth, wouldn't you rather take a gamble?
Woman: Why, I suppose it couldn't hurt. Where do I sign?
Anti-Christ: Just pull up your shirt, and let me get out my rusty meathook, and scratch my little mark in you, and we're set!
Woman: Fantastic! I can't wait to tell my husband what an exciting day I've had!
The curtains close as the woman is peeling her shirt off and the Anti-Christ is smiling with his thumbs up.

Distort Biblical meaning? How do you know you've gotten the right end of the stick either? I'm not sure how it's definitely going to play out either, because I'm not God. Revelation is not the only spot in the Bible with end-times prophecy, so perhaps you dismiss by picking and choosing what to believe? Maybe that affects how people view Christianity and Christians. Not much to say positively about a God you can fit in a box of your own creation.

That whole claiming human souls thing, I don't do that anymore.
Seriously, do you have any idea how little human souls go for now days? I could get more for recycling pop cans.
Plus people always want some grandiose wish of wealth and power in exchange for their souls. Fancy cars, jewelry, whores and crap like that. I mean who do they think I am, Santa Claus? And when I tell them their souls are worth maybe a DVD player or a couple of Walmart gift cards, they get all huffy on me and cop an attitude.
You know, It's just not worth the hassle.
Let me ask you this... ever try EATING a soul? I find it best on toast... nothing beats waking up to some OJ and Soul-toast... mmm good eat'n!

So we have 10 years to save the planet from turning into a total frying pan?
I remember democrat Ted Danson talking about a 10 year deadline. In 1988 he said we had 10 years to save the oceans or we're all going to pay the consequences which would be our deaths.
Global warming is much ado about nothing.

That is a pretty simplistic response. It is much easier for us not to want to take responsibility for our destructive lifestyles.
To respond to your comment...
Well,
Last time that happened it took hundreds of millions of years.
There is no denying that factories and buildings heat up the climate.
Have you been in New York City in the middle of a heat wave. Even air conditioners create heat.
Factories and industry create heat, there is no denying this fact.
As humans encroach on nature, there is little that is not affected or damaged by the footprint that we make on the earth. If we do not slow down this trend, I believe that dire consequences will be inevitable.

Has anyone ever come up with an explanation for this little bit of numerology (which to orthodox Jews is a transgression by the way)?
How did this number manifest itself as "the number of a man"?
And of course, as one of my favorite old friends, Stoney Burke, has mentioned, one of the Christian Right's favorite recent presidents has six letters in each of his names: Ronald Wilson Reagan.
