what exactly is this "reputation" feature, how does it work, how do you see yours, etc?

okay, i figured out how to see mine, but i still don't get it. you get reputation points when people click the thing at the bottom of your screen name... how many points? what is the function? how do i see other users' reputations?

Ok, Here's the deal with reputation points....

You are allowed to give feedback to other users concerning their posts. i.e. whether you agree or disagree... it is also considered proper etiquette, on some forums, though not all (though not obligatory), to post a short one-lined phrase or message, along with your name in the text space...

to see if you've received any rep. points, click on the User CP option in the top right hand part of the menu... it will show you which posts you've received reputation points for... A green dot will appear next to posts in which someone agrees with you, or "approves" of... for which you will receive points of a numerical value...
A red dot will appear for negative feedback

you will notice next to each person's post, under the avatar, there is a green dot... whenever you receive enough positive feedback, another green bar will appear, then 3 then 4, and so on...

the same with negative feedback... the dots will turn red (i.e. if someone has 3-4 red dots undeer their avatar, chances are they've pissed off more than a few people)

hope this helps

Hehehe.... In the US "Yankees" generally refers to the Yankees baseball team, and when people within the US use the term for a group of people it's generally in the old Civil War context where the North was the Union or Yankees and the South the Rebels.

See, for us guys here in the US, the problem with the British is that we never quite know what, exactly, is British. It's sort of an island with a couple of smaller islands, and when we call someone English they get all huffy and say they're NOT English, they're Scottish or from Wales, which I guess is sort of a state or province or religion or whatever. And then there are Irish who may or may not be British, but they are usually fighting some small province on their island, so that makes it even more diffcult to figure out who is who. Plus you have all those princes and dukes and lords and they are always from some place that we generally don't know of. So by and large it's just easier to put all of you guys in the "British" pot.

hahahah I think it's just easier to call people from Wales = welsh, and people from Scotland = Scottish, people from ireland are generally Irish, and people from England are generally English lol. They're all seperate countries, kinda like America and Canada.

We're better at football too!

(when they say football, they mean soccer.)

Calling most Americans "yankees" wouldn't be insulting, just simply incorrect. If you're from the south, you're not a yankee. if you're from the midwest, you're not a yankee. if you're from the west, you're not a yankee.

I don't call English people "British," usually. But his location simply said "United Kingdom," so that's all I had to go by.

I use Brit from time to time... even used it on Obbich in another thread on here, but I never mean it to be insulting... here it's sort of a cute thing. My ex was English, and I got the whole "Brit" lecture at the time.

I get the usages, but I just sort of like being able to use Brit from time to time. Although I would NEVER use that for someone who wasn't from England, as wacked out as that sounds. If they're Scottish or Irish, etc... then that's what they are.

As for Yankee... I am a Yankee I guess just because I'm from New England, but other than that, I was NO association with that GAWD-AWFUL word (I'm also a Red Sox fan, so we don't really dig the whole "Yankee" word too much. ;) )

And on reputation, I think it's cool as long as people are good about when to give it and why! :)

:) (I've been making more note of giving it out when I'm enjoying a thread or poster, it's fun to sort of pass it around!)

Just discovered that you can only give out so much reputation in a 24 hour period, which is a nice feature so that it won't be abused. I believe there are things built in also so that you can't give it to yourself, or give a bunch to one person, etc.

I gave it out to people I feel are deserving, and contributors, etc... but it's cool that there's a waiting period to give out more. I think it will mean more that way.

Also, you may have noticed that there is no name associated with who gives it to you, so if you do want someone to know it was you, you could leave them a note.

:D

Here's a question... I have no red dots, but I have dots that are grey - but they also have positive notes with them..... sooooooo, they can't be negative right?

For example, one note says "Woot Woot! Go Sox"... LOL, so that's a positive! but it's grey, and not green, so I'm sort of stumped on how exactly these work?

Where are those gray and red dots?

As for who leaves rep points and what they say, this can be set so that posters see who gave them positive or negative reputation, and what they had to say. That can cause bad blood if it's negative (which really doesn't happen often) and so I didn't turn that feature on.

The whole rep system is an experiement. It is potentially valuable, and it can be great fun. But it can also be abused, so I'll be watching it closely. I made one initial mistake by giving everyone the default starter value of 10 rep points, which equates to the "is on a distinguished road" label. I should have it set to zero, which equates to "is an unknown quantity."

LOL....well that explains why I have 10 rep points. :D I had only posted twice, and I couldn't for the life of me figure out why I had gotten 10 rep points for those.

Thanks for the explaination, Conrad.

They are on my UserCP page, listed below my subscribed threads. So I can see that I have received reputation, but again... I have green squares next to some, and grey squares next to others... so I can't quite figure out if the grey means negative?? And again, if it has a positive response in the note line, seems unlikely it should be negative... LOL :)

At what point does our reputation on this forum translate into street cred? I need more street cred.

... and then I accidentally submit the post. Then eat supper. Now you see why I need more street cred. I can't even say "yo" without sounding ridiculous.

if you get rep. points from someone who has received no positive reputation points, I think you get a grey dot... I think you also get one if you get rep. points from someone with less than a certain number of posts...

so, say I were to give person x rep. points, and I only have 8 or 9 posts, then it would result in a grey dot, or neutral reputaion (i.e. neither negative or positive)

once a person has posted more often, then their reputation points are worth more... say someone with 1000 posts (which will eventually happen to quite a few people here) gives you rep. points, then you will move further up the food chain more quickly... and same goes if they neg. you

OK, now I'm confused. Are you talking about different dots than the ones I mentioned?

yes.

next to your number of posts is a green dot showing your reputation. also, in your user cp, you can see where people (though you can't see who) have given you reputation, and whether it was positive or negative for that particular thread.
