Deven's article and comments highlight the mindset of anti-choice religious fundamentalists. Not counting the media voices and church leaders who are often completely shameless, most Christians actually do believe that, one, abortion is murder, and, two, that a woman's highest purpose in life is to create babies.

We talk a lot about the claim that abortion is murder. But we don't talk so much about the other point. The sexism that goes along with the anti-choice mindset necessarily has a very low opinion of female humanity. It wasn't even until recent generations (and the secularization that came with them) that we developed a vocabulary to describe both sexism and the pursuit of sexual equality, because prior to that it was assumed that females are worth less than males and should be mistreated accordingly. After all, that's what Christianity has preached ever since the fall of Rome.

I encourage you to engage anti-choice people on this second point more often. They honestly don't realize how outlawing abortion is essentially code for making women second-class citizens. Help them to realize, and we can make some progress.
