I have been supponed (Louise is not awake at the moment) to court in June to tesify about an event i witnessed.
When the police were questioning me I describled one of the people involved as a fat balding man. The police said nothing about my description. In court I am pondering what my response will be should the judge say that I am not alowed to use insutling terms. Hopefully there will be no judical comment but there might be a problem and I am trying to think through possible responese to a judge's order not to use the term fat to describe one of the participants. I am not actully asking for sugestiions but if anyone here was in a similiar situation i would be happy to hear about it. |

Large and overweight are two terms that are both synonyms for your original statement, and they fit the criteria of being at once descriptive but unoffensive

I think this is the perfect format to point out that the witness chairs aren't fat friendly. Assuming, of course, that they aren't.

I just asked 400 lb Louise if she was large, overweight, or fat. She responded, "All of the above. Large could just mean tall." So if I tell a woman that she is overweight she will not be offended? And of course over what weight? I have had bumper stickers on some of my cars that read "Fat Can Be Beautiful" Peggy Williams argued that the sticker should read "Fat is beautiful" Have you never heard that fat is not a four letter word, diet is. Suppose he had been black, in order to keep from offending him should I refer to a person of color as off white? What is the opinion of the off white members of this board? How about well tanned? Less reflictive? Fat is a descriptive adjective and for those who hate themselves because of their large size trying to hid their fat with other words will not make the fat go away. In court I am ready to challange, ask least to some degree, the belief that being fat is something to be ashamed of and certainly never to be mentioned in polite society. Hopefully my accurate descripiton will be accepted with out coment. I do not expact any flak because I have refered to him as a man rather then a non-woman or someone who is an x chromosome short. |

Although we are reclaiming fat *I *would probably avoid using it in court if you were instructed to not use 'offensive wording' as most people see it a derogatory, the judge probably will as well and really your job is as a witness not to push your own political agenda.
Other words recently reclaimed but probably not appropriate for court... Slut and The N word. Just sayin' True Quote:

Or just describe the man in a more scientific terminology - examples . . .
He was about 40. He was a few inches taller than me and I think he weighed 350 pounds. He had a hairline that had receded about ten inches. His hair was turning gray. His hair looked like Kojak's. Or, His head looked like LL Cool J's - shiny, hairless. (Or, if you're feeling sassy and the judge isn't too sour. . . . ) He had a bald head in the style of Yul Brynner. He was 6 ft tall, and weighed around 400 lbs. He was dressed in a beautiful Mexican style black shirt. The shirt was decorated in neon colored parrots with sequins on their feathers. |

I also remember him saying, as he looked at the principal standing in the door way, What's going on here. or similiar words. |
