Default I Know!!!......

......Maybe because it's an industrial accident with dire environmental
consequences! I guess the accident might not have happened if
common sense had prevailed over politics.

Not to point a finger at any one person, but just politics,
in general. Sometimes I like Obama and sometimes I
don't, but I don't mean put blame on him.

Now you've done it. You've opened the door to people who will yell about how "Obama has not done enough!!" If he were down at the Gulf with a mop and bucket cleaning up the oil coming ashore, he still wouldn't be doing enough. Maybe they want him to wave his Kenyan magic juju stick and make the oil disappear...

Isn't that what you expected out of Bush? Face the music that everyone now has to listen to, this is "Obama's Katrina".

Default Re: Hmm no thread on oil spill..........

The greatest problem displayed once again is that the oil industry has all the expertise and equipment. I hear people say President Obama should do something... WHAT? That little detail is not spelled out.
The oil companies have the robotic submersibles, the state of the art equipment to view what is happening at the ocean bottom where the blow-out took place. Also the robotics to make all repair attempts.
To me the biggest problem is when the oil companies give a report to some government agencies on how they would handle an oil spill, they only have to write a report. There are no demonstrations, so all will know the actual capabilities of dealing with an accident. At 5,000-ft. deep most US Navy submersibles and robotics are unable to go to such depths let alone do anything once they get don't there other than observe.
I would love to see BP, Hallibuton and, Transocean pay the entire tab for the clean-up and damages. Just call them all together in one room, present the bill and, let them fight it out, when all is said and done the three will pay the entire tab. But... having the "finest government money can buy," these companies will pay some and somewhere down the line they will get some sort of financial break from the government that will make all better. The government (on many levels) will pay some and, poor individuals such as fishermen and the US taxpayer will "get hosed!"
We have to get the oil industries to finance some companies that deal with this sort of problem, much like the specialty of fighting "oil well fires."

Not trying to hijack the topic but, this all makes me wonder if a ship with a nuclear reactor sinks and the containment vessel breaks, what will and can be done? This will put the navy on the hot-seat. So far, the world has not faced this naval problem.

I don't understand why they don't have a way to cap it and stop the flow. Why are they drilling in the first place if they don't have a way to stop it should something like this happen?

Deep water drilling of this nature is pushing the outer edge of what technology is capable of. There is absolutely no margin for error. There are redundant failsafes that are supposed to be able to stop blowouts from happening. If they are maintained properly, the chances of a blowout are surprisingly low. The trouble was, safeties on the Deepwater Horizon well were either neglected or simply ignored. The main failsafe, a thing called a BLOWOUT PREVENTER was damaged in an accident. BP made a decision to ignore the problem rather than lose time and money replacing it.

The last line of defense is something called an acoustic switch. It is a device to remotely seal a blowout in the first critical minutes. Only Brazil and Norway require acoustic switches on oil rigs. Some oil companies use them despite not being required to do so in most countries. BP does not.

Edited to add: Once a blowout goes out of control, it can take months to finally get it sealed. The worst deep water blowout in history (which this spill is very close to surpassing) took ten months to seal.

Because the Govt doesn't allow safer drilling practices closer to shore or on land because it might "harm our beaches and natural wildlife" according to uncompromising environmentalists, so these companies are forced into deep water by EPA regulations.

Let's completely ignore the fact that the deep water is where the most oil is.

Who's ignoring the facts? Companies aren't venturing into deep waters by corporate greed alone. You know, it takes two to apply for and approve these drilling licenses. Obama is making some overdue headway on the government's failings in this market, but his suspension of drilling is completely unneccesary, ludicrous, and endagers our national security and our wallets. He might as well be setting us up for another depression.

Who said anything about corporate greed? If you are going to drill for oil, it makes sense to hit the richest deposits. That's just good business sense. What is NOT good business sense is to ignore prudent safety measures, placing not only lives in danger, but risking squandering the precious and irreplacable resource you are trying to get at in the first place.

Ignoring safety protocols to save time and money is the very definition of corporate greed.

See, this is what bothers me. Isn't BP a British owned company? So why is Britain so quiet? As usual, the US has to do everything. I do not believe the federal government of the United States can take over a foreign company.

BP is a plc - it's owned by it's international shareholders not by the state of the UK (or any other state). Just like say - Microsoft, or HSBC, or Sony.

Default all of this makes me sick

all over the TV you see the effects it has on the endangered animals, pelicans, turtles, etc. and the economy. how about the rest of the region? algae is being devastated. without that, the ecosystem is shot. this is undoubtedly THE worst oil spill of all time. it has been leaking for almost 50 days now, and its just starting to wash on shore, and thats from the initial burst. the ocean down there is shot, i don't know if it will ever return to normal.
all i can hope is that now the world will see how much is wrong with oil, and legislators will have the balls to stand up and try to change things. green energy is all around us, we have the capability to use it, but we don't, thanks to corporate power in washington. f u big business.
