Default Newly delurked

Hi all,

I have been a reader of Dimensions for a long time, but not a contributor. I'm so happy to see a GLBTQ forum now!!!

Anyway, I'm a 38 year old (mostly) gay (mostly) female person. I'm somewhat on the genderqueer side. I'm fat and really like fat women.

I hope to enjoy posting more stuff in the future. I think this new forum is great!

Welcome, Geektastic! Glad to see you delurk, and just as an fyi-your introductory post sounds a lot like something I could write about myself (hope that doesn't frighten you off ). However, I'm more likely to be labeled a dork or a nerd than a geek.

As an aside, does anyone know the difference between a dork and a nerd? I was asking about this yesterday, and do not know the answer.

Welcome Geektastic!!

Butch I found these definitions lol :

Dork - quirky, silly and/or stupid, socially inept person, or one who is out of touch with contemporary trends

Nerd - refers to a person who passionately pursues intellectual activities, knowledge, or other obscure interests that are age inappropriate rather than engaging in more social or popular activities. Therefore, a nerd is often excluded from physical activity and considered a loner by peers, or will tend to associate with like-minded people.

Are they true? I dunno lol. I always thought of myself as a nerd, but not so sure now!!

Hmm, now I'm confused, too! I can be quirky and silly, and out of touch with the trends, but I'm not stupid or socially inept, at least not to a noticeable degree. Nerd, well, I have no choice, as that sounds like my job description, lol.

As a fellow Morrissey lover, does that interest fall under the heading of either term?

Speaking of Morrissey, I've had "Hairdresser on Fire" in my head a lot over the past few weeks. I wonder why?

Well thats why I always thought of myself as a nerd, because I know simply too much about Morrissey!! But I'm not super intellectual or socially inept (I hope!) or friends with many people who can even stand Moz!! So maybe not!?

Hairdresser on Fire....hmmm..maybe you need a hair cut lol!?

Hey all,

Thanks for the really nice welcome. Well, I'm probably more of a nerd than anything else, but 'nerdtastic' just doesn't have the same ring about it. BTW, I just came up with my nick late at night when I didn't know what to pick.

Some of my geeky/nerdy interests include computers (used to be a big computer geek, but not so much of one now), science of all types (I'm a clinical laboratory science major), and various things about just about any subject under the sun--history, culture, etc. I read a lot. I've always been an information sponge. I have a really wide variety of interests--too many to list here right now.

Cool to see there's lots of people here who like Morrissey--I like him too. My fave stuff by him is mostly when he was with the Smiths, which I listened to a LOT as a teenager. I don't know much of his newer (later than early 90's) stuff though.

Ok, picture by request. This is probably my geekiest, too. There are some seriously geeky books on that bookshelf.

Let's see...on the top shelf, I have The Great Alaska Nature Factbook, Complete Bike Maintenance, How to Solve Word Problems in Algebra, some communications books, some math textbooks (college algebra, statistics), a big organic chemistry textbook, and a collection of Omni Magazines from the 80's.

On the middle shelf, I have mostly clinical laboratory science textbooks--Textbook of Diagnostic Microbiology, Modern Blood Banking and Transfusion Practices, Immunology and Serology, Hematology: Clinical Principles and Applications, Clinical Chemistry, and Fundamentals of Urine and Body Fluid Analysis. I also have another organic chemistry book and and a book on medical school admissions requrements that I picked up someplace. I have a collection of Advance magazine for medical laboratory professionals.

On the bottom shelf, I have mostly computer books and some more math books. I have an ancient copy of Teach Yourself Unix, which I learned a lot from, as well as about 5 moldy oldie books on Linux.

There's also a bunch of electronics books that I got from a friend, including Basic Electronics, Understanding Electricity and Electronics, Engineer's Notebook, and Electronics Made Simple. There is also a very old (1978) copy of Introduction to Microprocessors: Software, Hardware, Programming. And oh! I forgot, the coolest book I got from him--Build Your Own Laser, Phaser, Ion Ray Gun, and Other Working Space-Age Projects. I'm not a hardware wizard or anything, but the book is neato, at least for the title.

Geeky, geeky, geeky--lol. I have other books in the house, too, including other textbooks. I have a pile in another corner of the room that has mostly social science books and several Russian language books. I have mostly novels, some poetry, and other literature, in the living room. I have Homer, Chaucer, Shakespeare, Edgar Allen Poe, Walt Whitman, Oscar Wilde, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, and other classic writers. I have the whole Harry Potter collection as well as a box set of Little House on the Prairie that I got at a yard sale. Had a blast re-reading those on one of my school breaks.

I also have lots of oddball books that I've picked up at yard sales, thrift stores, and library free book giveaways--I'm trying to cut down on those to avoid so much clutter. I think the highlight from that bunch of books is The Sex Life of the Animals by Herbert Wendt, published in 1965 and translated from German. The table of contents has the coolest headings, such as "Life from Boiled Meat", "The Labyrinth of the Worms", "Homosexuality and Childcare", "The Pleasure of Pain", "Male Childbed and Midwifery" and "Cannibal Wedding." Lots of cool illustrations of jellyfish, embryos, cells, etc.

I have some erotica somewhere, including a cheesy lesbian biker novel. I think I still have Anais Nin's Delta of Venus, too. I've got historical novels, Star Trek novels (those are actually someone else's, really truly), etc. I have a book on UFO's and also the Field Guide to North American Monsters, a funny crytpozoology book. Oh yeah, I started to learn Esperanto at one time, so have some Esperanto books and tapes. Near the dumpster I found this beautiful book in both English and Russian (mostly in Russian--just the summary and some other things are also in English) on the Annunciation Cathedral in the Moscow Kremlin.

Is that enough book porn for you guys? I have a lot more than that. No wonder I never have a date...

Thanks for the breakdown, it got me all excited. I am more frivolous than geeky these days but I would spend hours at that bookshelf! I have a major weakness for geeks, particularly if they are into languages/literature/programming/Science. My partner has a hard time fending me off whenever he does anything geeky.

1. Are you a biker?
2. What languages do you speak?
3. Do you happen to be into S&M? Or is your book about The Pleasure of Pain purely scientific?

(It seems that all the fat genderqueer geeks I have met prefer fat partners. Boohoo.)

Hi Cors,

1.) I am a non-motorized biker. I ride my mountain bike all over town. Underneath all the chub, I have really strong legs. Over time, I've been learning how to do my own repairs and tune-ups and stuff.

2.) I'm only truly fluent in English, unfortunately, but I can speak/understand/read Russian to a limited degree. I took a year of Russian in college and want to learn more and become fluent in it. I know bits and pieces of several different languages. I know a little French and Spanish, and can make out stuff in other languages. I wish I were actually fluent in more languages.

3.) That "pleasure of pain" thing is just a chapter in an odd little book I have, but yeah, I'm pretty kinky. Not into heavy duty pain, but like to get spanked and like lots of other kinks. I think I'm more into private exploration of fantasies with someone I trust rather than engaging in the whole leather scene/BDSM play party thing, though.

I do prefer a fat partner, but I'm open to people of other body types, too.

Thanks for answering! ;D

Silly me, I got too carried away by the words pleasure and pain to notice that you already stated in the breakdown that it is just a chapter of a strange book. And oooh, kink! You should check out Pat Califia if you haven't already. Raw genderqueer BDSM hotness!
