A rag curl is when you use left over material (an old sheet or towel) and cut it or rip it into strips. You then take a section of hair and roll it up using the strip like a roller then instead of using pins you just tie the strip once you've rolled the hair as high as you want it. I believe it was used in the 20's, 30's, and 40's

i feel your pain! i have fine, straight hair that won't hold a curl to save my life. i have the best luck with just washing and air drying. once your hair is dry, then set it with the largest sponge rollers you can find. (make sure your hair is dry when you start because with your length the inner ends wouldn't dry properly when using sponge rollers). i tend to roll my head before bed and sleep in them, but i have had success with about 2 hours of set time. before you unroll the curlers give your head a light jet with some quality hairspray and give it a minute to set up. this will keep the roots up after you unroll. once you unroll the curlers give your hair a light spray with hairspray and let dry before you run your finger through/style. this will give the curls a little support. once you get to the preferred look, set with final set coat of hairspray. i know it sounds like alot of hairspray, but that is why you need to invest in a good hairspray that has alot of hold without the laquer hardness. this method works for me...hope it helps you.

rolling your hair in different directions can change the style of the curl. you probably want to roll it under, sideways will work too, especially with an iron.

I know its a bit random but I thought this might help as an example, when curling this wig I curled away from the face either side and met in the middle at the back to keep the uniformity, I used a 18mm ceramic curling tong.

I sort of gave up on having long hair or trying to curl it. My hair is very fine and a bit thin in the front. If it's chin length or longer, it's looks really limp and much thinner in the front than if it's short.
That being said, I have had good luck with staying power to give my hair a little lift with pomades (I had a good supply of stuff in an orange puck made by C, but can't find it anywhere anymore. Also tried Dirt by Jonathan, but it's a bit heavy for my texture) and a styling lotion (something between a pomade and a gel- specifically Bumble and Bumble's Styling Creme in the orange bottle). Trying to fight your hair's natural characteristics is time consuming, expensive and frustrating. I have short, very fine, very straight black hair. I would love to have long red curls a la Julianne Moore or Julia Roberts but it ain't gonna happen without a lot more time and money and patience than I will ever have for my hair. |
