I'm a Mac guy exclusively, but I had the same problem (command+shift+3/4 won't grab from DVDs on Macs). I found various 3rd party software that could do the job though. Google around a bit and you'll find stuff to do the deed.

No, I laugh at YOU, my friend. Not everyone wishes to fritter their precious life away playing steroidal, hyperviolent, juvenile versions of Pac Man. Thus we use Macs, a superior OS in every way except video games.

Fixed.

No shame in Macs, it's just that for an OS, I much prefer Windows.

I was able to do it using Gimp to take the shots, but it only works for certain players. It entirely depends on how the player draws to the hardware - it's direct draw, you'll get a shot of the window borders with a hole in the middle. (This is Windows-directed advice, BTW)

So if you have all that to say about Mac-heads, what do you have to say about Linux/BSD-heads like me? Or will this thread have to move to Hyde Park if you answer that?

People use Windows:

1. Because they have to.
2. Because they love having every new piece of hardware be an adventure into drivers, patches, and meeting tech support people from far-away lands.
3. Because viruses and spyware sound so cybercool, they don't want to miss out on the fun. And who would deny someone else the fun of borrowing their identity for a while?
4. Because the computer came with it.
5. Because they desire an operating system that does everything Mac OSX does, just in a clunkier way.

Last time I try to help you out, ya big hoon.

It's just the office manager in me ("back to work, you!"), but I gotta ask: Is anyone gonna answer the original question about DVD screen caps, or has this all become broadsides about Mac vs. Windows vs. Macaroni & Cheese? Not that I'm pining for those good old DOS days, but how's about we stay focussed here?

It's that rough aussie sense of humor, I suppose, and I salute your restraint regarding emoticons. Even if Windows XP looks like something the Soviets would have used to typeset Pravda.

Default Macs and PC's

I have worked on and off with macs and PC's. There are things I like about both, and things I despise about both. However, I think as far as quality, the Mac wins out. It just works better most of the time. However, the PC is much more cost effective. I guess you get what you pay for.

I've never used Linux, but I'd like to give it a whirl. It might better than both Macs and PC's.

That's impressive that Bill Gates has the majority of consumers and manages to filter out all but the minority of the IQ scale. Maybe he uses extra dimensions in reality.

Default Weight Board PC wars

Does it really matter what OS we use? At least we can all agree that fat girls are hot.

For the record, I own one Dell PC, one old Mac laptop, and one new Mac laptop which runs both Mac OS and XP. They each have their pros and cons. Although the Macs tend to cost more as a new computer, they do tend to have a longer service life, and if you ensure that the PC that you are comparing it to is of high quality with similar specs, the cost isn't as far apart as you might think. Thank god there's two companies battling it out though. If there weren't we'd all still be using some pretty ugly software.

Default WTH? Here's more Mac vs PC haha

Windows more cost-effective than Mac? No way ! If you had said PC hardware is CHEAPER you would have a point. But even that gap became closer...

I work in the audio/video biz and i have both Mac and PC. So i can see the trouble with Windows first hand... failed hardware detection, things 'mysteriously' stopping to work... the system becoming sluggish .."ok.. reboot" ... not to mention the virus etc situation - ok, had none of the latter problems so far *knocks on wood* OTOH my Mac has a uptime of 3 months now (i just send it to sleep when i'm away). And the last reboot 3 months ago i had to do because of OS updates. Also i never had to reformat or maintanance downtimes. So solely relying on the PC would mean to lose money for me

Or different example. I know a guy quite well who makes a living with servicing recording studios etc (Mac and PC). 90% of his customers have PC based workstations (while Macs have a higher marketshare in the audio fiield). And his few Mac customers use old ProTools systems running on Mac OS 9 systems which are 6 years and older... nuff said.
.................................................. ................................
Screen Capturing:
The best software on the market is Snapz Pro. It captures ANYTHING that appears on your screen - with tons of output options. It would even capture a complete DVD.... which is not a good idea for other reasons LOL Snapz Pro is $70 and Mac-only. I use it on a daily basis and its concenience justifies the price for power users. If it's just for taking a few stills from a DVD, any Mac freeware will do the job.

On the PC Snagit seems to have the best reputation. I''ve used it a few times and found its usability horrible. F. ex. i've never managed to make it remember its last capture selection (here the DVD player window).... what a pain when you wonna make multiple capture stills of a DVD ! Also i can't promise you that it will capture DVDs - due to the cryptical nature of DirectShow. Click and pray i'd guess.

Those issues are so typical for most of the Windows software and adds another aspect to the Mac vs PC discussion...lol ... since i got started

If you're using the usual power dvd there's a "camera" button to save snaps.
Print screen will just capture the overlay surface, and not the actual video which is being muxed at the dac replacing the surface....
Just look in the players options for "harware acceleration", keying/alpha, yuv->rgb surface, overlay surface etc.. and turn it off.. the you can use prtscrn..

Last time I try to help you out, ya big hoon.
i build my own PCs so screw tech support. and windows XP with SP2 is great. but if you have tech support grade of knowledge then windows XP is really great in terms of keeping spyware and viruses off. and macOS can get both spyware and viruses but hackers dont really wanna hack mac because the majority of people own windows so no point making a virus for mac un less a virus can be coded to attack both OSes.

I've never used Linux, but I'd like to give it a whirl. It might better than both Macs and PC's.
macs just crash differently

My favorite is the Flash DVD Ripper. It does good quality ripping and it allows you to select chapters to copy or particular clips (even down to a particular frame) It's at www.dvd-ripper.com

And just for the sake of jumping into the PC/Mac argument. I've been doing great 3D animation on a PC for years longer than there was anything usable on a Mac. But the platform argument is silly. I've done great graphics on so many platforms that it seems stupid to be hung up on one particular one.
