Default Clam Chowder.

Which do you prefer?

1 Manhattan style?
2 New England style?
3 Hatteras style (New England style with no milk/cream)?

I've also seen #3 referred to as Rhode Island style.

Make mine Manhattan!

Really, if it's a good, quality homemade soup, it doesn't matter, to me, they're all delicious in their own way. However, if I'm eating the canned stuff, I'll have to go with New England Style, easier to doctor up to my tastes.

I've never had Manhattan or Hatteras chowders...so for now I'd have to go with New England. However, I'd love to try the other 2! I love chowders and soups!

When I was young, New England style was the only style I'd ever had, or knew about. One cold winter day at the University, Manhattan style was the soup of the day.

I've never been the same since. New England is just blah for me now.

I definitely prefer New England style. It's one of the best comfort foods.

Definitely New England, although to be honest I haven't had a desire to actually try the others.

Here's a recipe for Hatteras (or Rhode Island) style clam chowder, which is my personal favorite:

http://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=j...56988011,d.cWc

Dairy products were probably at a premium down there until recent times: It's hard to keep a cow on a sandbar.

It's worth a try. Anyway, if you don't like it you can always thicken it a little and add some cream.

The ingredients list 3 quarts of clam juice. I wonder if I can substitute something else or some recipe for clam stock.

Better Than Boullion makes a clam base (like paste, in a small jar) that might be easier to find, depending on where you are.

I love Rhode Island style. To me it has a more pronounced clam taste. I have had it with clams, clam broth, potatoes, onions and celery, thyme, bay leaves, s&p, and sometimes ham or bacon. I am close enough to NYC that you can get every type of chowder, but gimme a bowl of Rhody.

Chuck has said some nice things
Default Creamy = lovely

I prefer New England and make it with mostly half and half. I like to add a little bacon also. I no longer bother to get fresh clams, clean them and cook them.

How much do I like clam chowder? I once did a little trip out Cape Cod to test the chowder, doing little else but stopping for a cup of chowder every hour or so.
