Default Attitude of Gratitute

As the majority of us on this board are Canadian (us Canadian ladies gotta stay warm somehow!), our thanksgiving is coming up on Monday. My question for the board is - what are you grateful for this thanksgiving?

(Ill add my list later but being the stereotypical Canuck I am, Ill let you all go first).

(No seriously. I apologized to everyone on the bus and sang along to Bryan Adams at the grocery store today. I may die of being Canadian).

"Thanksgiving is a time when people travel thousands of miles to be with people they only see once a year and are then thankful that they live thousands of miles away and realize once a year is way too often"

While I am thankful for my family I am also thankful we don't live too close and that I am not involved in all their drama.

I've been pretty blessed by life, so am grateful for so much. But I'm going to focus on one little piece of it here: the people here. Limiting my involvement on the site for a bit reminds me of how many great people and good conversations there are here. Thanks for being you, and being here, y'all.

Is there a story behind Canadian Thanksgiving like there is for the American version? Here it began as a feast by the first settlers to commemorate a bountiful harvest after several difficult years and it was assisted by the local Native Americans and, by the way, please be cool and don't look up what happened to those natives later...
Yeah, I could Google "Canadian Thanksgiving origin" but where's the fun in that?

Anyway....I got nothing. Well, that's not true. I have my health. Based on how I've lived for the past 15-20 years I should have diabetes, cirrhosis and lung cancer and the fact that I don't is a genuine miracle. Yay?

Celebrating the end of harvest is common in many cultures and places, and more than anything our Thanksgiving is formalization of that. Some of the early French colonies did have special Masses of thanks giving, but those were not so much related to harvest, so efforts to tie that in to the modern holiday always struck me as dubious.

Or in other words we totally ripped off the idea from you lot, and just moved it to when the weather was better for us :-)

There's a vague 'harvest' thing over here too. Like, growing up, we had a harvest ceremony thing at the local church that they made all the school kids go to. Kinda a religious thing. As an adult it isn't anything I've ever encountered but I grew up as an atheist so I don't know much about such things anyway.

As Tad noted, There's assorted variations on Harvest festivals and Thanksgiving services throughout this time of year, though (as loopy noted) they're mostly a religious event in the UK without an attached secular holiday.

However, the half term holiday that scottish schools get in mid-october is often called 'the tattie holidays' as this is when potatoes were traditionally harvested.

The first Canadian Thanksgiving was for the first Harvest at Port Royal, NS, in 1606, so actually pre-dating the Pilgrims of Plymouth Colony; but most European cultures had a 'harvest celebration' of some sort, and harvest celebrations are common across all agricultural communities.

This page lays out some thoughts about thankgiving celebrations:
