Default Best things in and around ... your town

I used to use the Canada sub-board of the meet-ups board as an all purpose Canadian board, and one thread I liked was my "Best things in and around Ottawa" one. I'm keeping the concept, but throwing it open to everyone, wherever you are.

The idea is that if you've been to a restaurant that you love, found a great amusement that people may not know about, or found some other little treasure that people here might be interested in knowing about, give it a little write up here.

========================

This one is very specialized and time limited. Ottawa Bluesfest only runs for another five days as I write this and I don't know that anyone else here is apt to be going, but just in case ....

This year there is a little booth selling icecream, all they do is two scoops on a waffle cone for $4. Which isn't all that bad of a price anyway, but is certainly the most reasonably priced food item you'll find in Bluesfest. And, for some reason, it doesn't seem to have much of a line-up. You can find it on the north side of the main field, near the water station. I've totally enjoyed ice cream while listening to Melissa Etheridge and to July Talk, and it was lovely

And a more perennial Bluesfest secret that we only discovered after years of attendance. The cafe in the war museum is running, and you can get take out coffee there! Because sometimes you just need a caffeine hit to make it through until the headliners for the night comes on.

Two foodie places stand out...

1) Hippy, vegan donut shop (you wouldn't even know it was vegan). A bit pricey but worth every penny while you're eating those donuts.

2. Hole in the wall-family-Mexican-food-joint. Their fries are to die for! For $2 they give you a whole bag full. They also have amazing rice, refried beans, tacos, etc.

Oklahoma City (of all places) has a jewel of an Ethiopian restaurant that even most of the locals don't know about. The Queen of Sheba is on MacArthur Blvd. just south of NW 23rd street, between a Mexican ice-cream shop (home-made and incredible) and a cowboy dance hall. Did I say it's a mixed neighborhood? Anyway the cuisine at QOS is well worth the trip, if you find yourself in central OK.
