Default Of interest to the video gamers here. Hillary is at it again.

Hillary Clinton is introducing the Family Entertainment Protection Act .

http://www.gamespot.com/news/6140535.html

The "Family Entertainment Protection Act" is equally ominous and vague at the same time. Things like unspecified fines, legal action against publishers and retailers, random investigations of retailers, and private citizens filling complaints if they feel a game rating wasn't sufficient.

But this is not censorship? What? No retailer will want the hassle of carrying an M rated game when the possibility of lawsuits, investigations and legal action against the retailer and even possibly the salesperson selling the game looms over their heads.

All under the guise of protecting Children. Yeah, right.

Hillary of course is ignoring the stuff on TV that is beamed into people's households everyday. But she wouldn't want to go after her friends in Hollywood when she wants to run for president. Much easier and to go after the old scapegoat of video games. No Doom 3 for you! Go home and watch some wholesome Hollywood productions like Sopranos, Desperate Housewives and Reality TV.

Big Brother, er Big Sister is watching the games you play.

I voted for her in 2000. I can't believe she'll be the democratic nominee frontrunner in '08. She panders (for me) way too much to the right. Why doesn't she call her self a moderate?

While I don't think children should play violent video games ( I did a research paper on it and many journal articles did point to negative effects, especially young boys) it's the parents' responsibility to monitor what their children do!

How does this Family Entertainment regulation differ from the laws regarding the sale of cigarettes or alcohol? Retailers are held responsible if minors buy those items from their stores. It seems most retailers are happy to comply with those laws. Is this new family entertainment thing more entrapping in some way?

Video games are not comparable to cigarettes and alcohol. They are comparable to other forms of entertainment like TV, movies and music.

Kids can buy R rated movies at Walmart for $5.50 in the discount bins. They can watch mature rated TV shows, R rated movies and sexually explicit music videos on TV. They can listen to mature songs and talk shows on the radio.

These forms of entertainment are rated and it's up to parents to make sure their children are not playing, watching or listening to subject matter they find offensive. Many TVs and game consoles even offer parental locks to prevent them from playing mature rated content.

It goes back to what people find offensive. I don't find killing zombies and demons in Resident Evil or Doom offensive. I do find most of what's on TV now days offensive. Do I sue the broadcasters and people that make the shows? No, I turn off the TV.

My neice won't let anyone buy toy guns for her sons for the holidays. They've seen movies *I* haven't even seen, yet they aren't allowed to play with violent toys. Some people are funny that way. They don't care if the kids watch, they just don't want them to play or participate in glory violence. I think with all the school violence we've been having people are a little on edge.

I agree. She is the kind of politician that wants unlimited power with no accountablity. If any of our rights or freedoms have to be compromised to push their agendas, that's just the price we will have to pay. Because only they know what's good for us.

because you are an intelligent person, and I commend you for it.

Don't get me started on the FCC (whose single purpose is to monitor pirate radio waves and not regulate morality). The whole Janet Jackson fiasco? Over 80% of the complaints came from a single Christian organization. 80%! ONE organization! So what do they do? They crack down on everyone else because they have somehow concocted this theroy, that if one person feels a certain way, 1,000 people feel that same way.

The more we censor our children and shelter them, the more curious we make them to what is outside our protective blanket. And the first chance they get, they will go for what they were told they could never have.

I'm not saying to let our children smoke marijuana and drink alcohol. But make them aware. Show them: this exists in the world, but it will turn your life to shit.

My experience with alcohol has been enough to keep me away from it. I've never touched the stuff. Because everyone i know that has, has become a burden on many other people. My girlfriends mom is an alcoholic. Her liver is shit, she is in the hospital for at least 2 weeks out of every other month, she got drunk while out with my girlfriend and my girlfriend (who wasn't even a teenager at the time) had to take responsibility and call a cab and find their way home.

My uncle? Threatened to kill my entire family and burn our house to the ground. He spit blood into my father's mouth (nearly giving him hepatitis). Was found naked in the halls of the motel we were staying at. Now? I have to make nice-nice with him at family gatherings because he doesn't remember any of it.

I fucking hate him, but every time I see him I smile and give him a hug because I can't forgive him for the shit he's put everyone through.

I will not forgive a fucking alcoholic until they give up the alcohol.

Wow.

I kind of went off on a tangent, there. Sorry. I don't get to talk to many people about this stuff. It kind of just...spewed forth.

Anyway, point is: SHOW your children the consequences of bad decisions. Don't shield them from the outside world.

EDIT: and on an unrelated note...let your kids read a freaking Harry Potter book, people! Or you can let them ruin their lives watching television instead of reading. Because I'm not sure there are many other books of interest to kids in the way that HP is.

*sigh* All I have to say is that I wish people would quit trying to protect me from myself...

If Hillary really wanted to be the Democratic frontrunner, she'd end this stupid little "family values" schtick and start talking about getting the troops out of Iraq. I don't agree that she's as bad as Bush (I mean, come on - she's more than four IQ points to her name), however I do believe that she, like many in the Democratic party, are lacking in direction these days.

Eh, not my responsibility anymore anyhow. I moved out of New York. I have to focus on crushing Rick Santorum in 2006. Hillary's little video game shenanigans pale in comparison to "Fetus Fondler" Santorum's crimes against humanity.

Surely that's *all* politicians? After all, power is the ultimate aphrodisiac (sic?).

Unfortunatly, as more and more goods are sold in fewer and fewer places censorship of any individual item becomes very easy. With the major supermarket chains unwilling to appear 'anti-family' they'll happily bin most risque computer games. To be honest this is more aimed at retailers then content designers, though it does squeeze the market for more adult orientated games to smaller stores. Saying that, GTA San Andreas, Doom 3 etc. sold extremily well despite these restrictions.

It amuses me that MTV will show what amounts to soft porn music videos, but won't go show someone smoking a ciggie.

Government lobbyists and organisations are now akin to a strict father denying us everything we enjoy. But like all kids, we can always find a way to get round it =)

Hillary is too smart for that, she knows that calling for a pull out would make her look "too leftist" for the Oval Office, and she knows that Americans are very concerned with "famliy values". And sensationalist journalism about the GTA games have made video games easy targets for middle age people to blame there childern's bad bevhior on. Kids can't vote, and gamers are not a well estblished voting bloc so there is no pro-gamming voice in Congress other the the lobbyists paid by the gaming companies.

There should be no suprise here- Hillary wanted children to be able to sue their parents...

Anyway the 'research' behind video game violence effects is as valid as the research encouraging the use of Ritalin... here's a hypothetical to illustrate the non 'science' involved: researchers wait outside a theatre after the audience has seen a sad movie.. they then ask questions of the audience and find (GASP) that the audience responses are a bit more "sad" and "depressed" then a control that hasn't just seen the movie- this is called a MOOD, which people actively seek to put themselves in BUT the researchers conclude that sad movies instill sad thoughts in people (DUH) and may CAUSE depression and even suicide in some people THUS sad movies should be regulated or banned blah blah...

Young boys if not playing "violent" video games or what not would otherwise be outside fighting, hitting each other with sticks or throwing rocks at each other... it's a XY thing and is perfectly natural... but our culture is so entrenched in its own BS that it now sees normal behavior as pathological and our science, don't get me started, is completely and utterly corrupt.

Hillary IS proposing censorship, and she will do a lot worse then censor video games if she and her hubby take back the White House.

it seems to me that parents want the government to do the parenting and thinking for them since they seem to be to lazy to do it them selves

I have to agree. I see so many "pussy parents" on a day to day basis who let their brats run around and cause all sorts of mayhem...it makes me sick! Whatever happened to grabbing your kid and sternly reprimanding him or her? Why do these breeders think that whining, "oh, Johnny, please behave" is going to actually get results? Dammit! I want to see some kids get good and punished for their bad behaviour just like I used to!

Angry Must... Destroy.... Accursed.... Hillary.... *arms nuclear rant*

...As a producer and designer of video games, I can feel a horrible rant coming on!

...Okay parents, its time to get up off your asses and start protecting your kids from these "negative" influences, instead of punishing the responsible people by supporting government censorship. What about the people who'd buy my games, but now can't because they're too "violent" to be sold? What about me???? I want to go out and buy F.E.A.R. or Doom 3, and now I, an adult can't, because the government makes it nearly impossible for retailers to carry such games??? Bah humbug! The "research" they do to support this nonsense is a joke, and Hillary seems to be at the forefront of the charge against banning video game violence, but as was pointed out earlier, she has no problem with her "compassionate" Hollywood cronies involved in raunchy sex and gruesome violence, all of which we get FREE through the fucking TV!!! Although in spite of this I must say, I would love to see Hillary run and get OBLITERATED by someone (which she would), and finally put that accursed Clinton family out of the present and into the dusty history books, where it belongs. Video game violence... What kills me is that this kind of thinking could damage my whole business, and I'll be damned if I'm going to let some Democrat bitch ruin my business (in some way other than exorbidant taxation of the marginally well off). When the time comes, if she does run, I'll be the first one at the polling booth to keep her and her scumbag husband out of office.

In a world fraught with disturbingly malnourished stick figure women whose heads look entirely too large for their bodies, we should all thank a higher power for this wondeful site.
