-Those little 5-hour energy thingies. First time I tried them was on a 9 hour drive from VA to OH and they work reeeeally well.
-water
-grapefruit gummis
-peanut butter sandwich
-parmesan Goldfish
-stop somewhere for some kind of meat sandwich

I usually try to keep stuff pretty bland or something that will give me some lasting energy without spoilage (peanut butter sandwich or crackers). I usually only bring water with me because I'll drink less of it and will therefore have to stop to pee less often. The grapefruit gummis are there because they're just damn good and you never know when you'll be able to find them again in your travels.

Every few years, my girlfriends & I head into Canada for an extended weekend, ending up in Sault Ste Marie. One of my friends always brings spanish omelette sandwiches. Sounds awful but they are actually amazing -- a carb lover's dream ... egg, potato, and soft, pillowy bread ... We bring a cooler to keep them fresh, but don't actually need to -- they are usually gone within an hour anyway.

Recipe, for anyone interested:

Olive oil for cooking
5 medium (40 oz each) baking potatoes, peeled, sliced and lightly sprinkled with salt
5 eggs
Seasonings as desired -- garlic, onion, paprika, etc (I go for nothing but salt 'n pepper)

Heat oil, add potato slices (careful, salt on them will cause splattering). Cook until tender, about 5 minutes. Add seasonings just as the potatoes are nearly done. Drain, leaving a small bit of oil in the skillet for the eggs. Whisk eggs, add potatoes, stir until all potatoes are coated with egg. Add all to a very hot skillet, spread mixture evenly & then lower the heat to medium. Shake the pan frequently until mixture is mostly set. Use a plate to cover the skillet, and turn until egg mixture is on the plate. Slide back into the pan (add oil if necessary) until the eggs are completely cooked. Cut into wedges, add more salt & pepper to taste.

We cut the eggs into rectangular wedges that fit into hoagie rolls. Seriously ... SERIOUSLY ... yummy.

While I fantasize about a road trip of non-stop snacking, my reality tends to be a lot more bland. Water and coffee are necessary, no matter what. Those tend to ensure that I have to stop fairly often, which usually means I can get food while I'm stopped anyway. Once in a while that will be TimBits (little donut-like things) picked up along with the coffee. If I really plan ahead I'll bring along some carrot and/or celery sticks, as I like something crunchy to bite into.

If I'm driving through lunch or dinner I prefer to stop at a Wendy's and get a junior burger and a plain baked potato. See the junior burger is small enough to hold in one hand while driving, without dumping all the toppings. And the baked potato will stay warm for ages, and I can just take half of it and munch on it when I'm ready. Not a very big meal, but if I eat too much I get sleepier, and it is hard enough for me to stay sharp when I'm driving for long.

I'm reminded of that scene in Cannonball Run where Terry Bradshaw and Mel Tellis are loading their car full of BEER, and Terry asks if they have enough ice for all that beer.

Mel: Plenty!

Terry: What about food?

Mel: *hands him a single bag of Fritos* Plenty!

Definitely the Chex mix traditional bag w/ a can of deluxe mixed nuts thrown into a Zip-Lock. Something sweet wouldn't hurt the situation, probably either peanut M & M's, Reese's peanut butter cups, Reese's pieces or a hopefully really fresh Butterfinger or Payday. I'll usually get a couple candy bars.

I've been known to travel - on planes - with a box of Triscuits and some Smoked Trout or Mackerel, and a couple blocks of cheese. I usually bring fruit, nuts, and Hit cookies. We used to get Cheese Waffles, but they are hard to find. Trail mix is good and I like dried banana chips. Corn nuts too.

Road trips!!!!!!! Yay!!!!!!

Whenever embarking on an epic road trip I usually enjoy the following:

1. At least three types of beverages....Water, coffee or tea, and soda or juice...sometimes gatorade
2. Pretzels, I especially like the mustard flavored ones.
3. Cheetos
4. Gummi Bears
5. Some type of chocolate....

And there should always be some beer in the cooler in the back seat to crack open upon arrival.

I would be SO fat if there was a free standing Auntie Anne's Pretzel shop with a drive thru.

I'm cursed that Ohio has no 7-11's or even QuikTrips which also has a decent icy drink. I miss Slurpee's more than words can say.

My road trip food and beverage usually consists of Diet Mountain Dew, water, and Coffee, some sort of super sour chewy candy, a bag of peanut butter M&M's and a stop at McDonald's not just for the potty break, but for a double cheeseburger and/or chicken McNuggets, and fries. I am SO fat. Thank goodness I am not doing the MO to OH roadtrips every month or so as I used to.

Anybody else travel any areas that have those big Buc-ees convenience store/gas stations?

I once stopped in one West of Houston on I-10 that was HUGE! And it looks like they are building another huge one Southwest of town on I-59. I never really had much time to just wander around and see what all they had; when we do roadtrips, it's usually for my husband's job, and we're trying to get to a destination by a certain time. But from what all I have been able to see when I have ran in for a quick bathroom and snack stop, they are pretty damn cool.

I also like the Love's truck stops too. We stop at one of those in town sometimes near all the truck yards, and then another one on Hwy 290 Northwest of town. They're not as big as the Buc-ee's and are more geared towards truckers than roadtrippers, but still on my list of good places to stop.

I also like to stop in the little local hole in the wall places. They have their own kind of character too. I always seem to find those sugar sweetened cokes from Mexico at little hole in the wall gas station stores in small towns. And usually some kind of local smokehouse jerky too. One has homemade kolaches that are just like my grandma made.
