I made sure to post a few places today too. Didn't manage to run amok, but made at least a token effort!

At least there were no Nickelback references. I am loyal to them on nationalistic principles even if they're nowhere near my top ten of Canadian bands / artists. The thing is, long before Americans started thinking it's cool to hate Nickelback, some Canadians ALREADY hated them. Hm well maybe "hate" is too strong of a word. More like, found them irritating and over-rated. But we canadians can be proud about mildly disliking them (do we really HATE anything?) long before Yankees decided to hate them too.

No wait, i guess Canadians do hate one thing: Toronto. That's kind of hard if you're a Torontonian, but hey, this thread is about the "joys" of being Canadian, right?

Why do Canadians hate Toronto so much? (never been, just curious)

Ask most people in New York state about New York City.....much the same. Biggest city, home office for a lot of the big national companies, home of much of the media, and big enough that many people there seem to think that 'cottage country' (the lakes 1.5-2 hours north of Toronto) is far away and a great adventure. With the result that the rest of the country hears a lot about Toronto and its affairs, whether it wants to or not, and even things like when stores rolled out products or held certain sales often seemed timed to suit Toronto (less so these days on that last one).

Or to put it more simply: Toronto is Marcia, the rest of the country is Janice

Out here on the West Coast, we mostly hear that Toronto hates Vancouver. I think 'we' hate them back just to be fair.

Haha.

I've never been to Toronto, but I love it because my sister lives there. And they have the Hockey Hall of Fame!

Vancouver, Montreal, Toronto, Ottawa, St John's: all awesome in different ways. I think the analogy to NYC is a good one, particularly given that the city is self-preoccupied and so therefore really irritating to those who think other things matter more.

You know, I actually hear most people aspiring to move to Vancouver, because it's so much nicer than shitty Toronto!

Elaine, Toronto is just a hellhole. It's non-stop, overpriced condos and construction, retardedly congested traffic, peppered with cracked-out hobos meandering all over the streets at all hours. The population is so fucked up - you just jump from ghetto to ghetto, where no one speaks english, and then you have the business district where you get to deal with guys in suits who may as well have a built in ass-panel for head insertion. When you move away from the downtown, there is an expansive, extreme suburbia, full of soccer moms, methlabs and perma-striking city workers. That's another thing: everyone is on strike all the goddamn time. I've never seen a more entitled collective of people in my life (did not always live here). And in the downtown, you get the pleasure of listening to ultra-socialist, bordering on communist propaganda everywhere you go - that may be another reason for the hatred of Toronto, because I don't think the rest of the country is nearly as far left, even BC. I'm positive that all the dirtiest people in Canada come to Toronto because they know the provincial and municipal governments will cater to them, despite the fact that they are never satisfied.

And there is the opinion of someone who is trying desperately to leave Toronto when her doctorate is finished

Vancouver definitely wins on the beautiful front. As far as immigration and entitlement, I should probably just keep my mouth shut. haha.

"Hell is other people" --Jean-Paul Sartre.

Toronto has more people than anyone else in Canada.

Therefore.....

personally I won't be surprised if Melian starts someday standing in her doorway with a shotgun yelling "Get off of my land!" I just wonder if she'll still be in downtown Toronto when it happens..... ;-)

I live in Oshawa, which is far too close to Toronto for my tastes. I have only ever seen Vancouver's airport, never been in the city itself. First time I saw the Rockies was from the airport and I never forgot that image of them, as I was going over them on my way to Hawaii... I would have no problem running west to be there, I would learn Chinese as well, they have such a huge Chinese population there, Toronto does to...but it's not Vancouver. And BC is also the only province that overturned the damnable HST and won.

Yah, boards were quiet on Thursday, we could/should have been amokerer. But to be honest I'm mostly on the site from my phone these days, and I'm far less apt to post from it.

I boycotted shopping for this fall/christmas. Did anyone find anything worth it for black friday in ontario? I didnt even see anything special.

I have panic attacks in crowds...so my hubby has to talk me off the ceiling qnd shoo me into a corner so i can have a little cry/panic attack. And TO is bad enough in general.

The young ones are at the age money is king anyway, so i shall be the favourite auntie/cousin this year.

I really shouldn't tease our American friends so much, we have been neighbours for such a long time .... separated only by a few rivers and lakes

or only by an imaginary line across the great plains
