Default Notice of Closure of the Soap Box

On installing the Soap Box - as spelled out in point 5 of the rules - the Mod Team announced that debate and development here would be closely monitored.

In an initial review after three months - beginning of April 2017 - we agreed to continue observing, as the development was approximately what we had expected at that point in time.

Since then, development of the Soap Box has deteriorated significantly - as can be seen when looking at a few statistics:
The Soap Box has 39 threads. Only 9 of them - counting out the picture threads - were active after 3/30/17.
The 2 picture threads alone account for 80% as many posts as all other threads put together.
19 of the 39 threads have less than 10 responses - 11 of them less than 5 responses.

Participation in the Soap Box has declined dramatically, leaving about only a handful of posters regularly posting.

We have discussed whether opening up the Soap Box for all posters might help. But given the experiences of preceeding Hyde Park, and here in the past months, we doubt that this would improve participation.

Political "discussion" on Dims remains dominated by a few posters who live in their own political world and refuse - or are unable to - follow general public communication rules and conventions. This is a major deterrent for other posters.

Despite this low participation rate, after dealing with spammers, the Soap Box remains the second largest source of moderator activity.

Given that Dims is a board with no explicit interest in general politics, moderating is done by volunteers, the amount of effort needed here for a non core theme of the boards is disproportionate - and also frustrating.

We sincerely regret to not have found a workable alternative for political discussions here - but given all the above named finding, we see no other option than to close the Soap Box.

Normally I would open a post like this with the phrase; “With all due respect.” But, I can't write that. Considering how the Mods, in my opinion, don't have any respect for the users of this site. If they did; they would have given notice and allowed some comment before they took down the Soap Box.

They didn't! They just took it down. Further, their reasoning is laughable silly. The truth is the Mods never wanted a political discussion forum. They were clear even before the Soap Box even went live that that was their intention.

For example, the Soap Box and the old Hyde Park were similar in one respect. When there is a build up to a big election like the mid-terms or a presidential election the interest by the public in politics spikes. This interest then spikes on sites like the former Hyde Park and the Soap Box.

Well … the election is over. So except for the minority in the public that considers politics important; most people really could not give a damn. This is reflected in the number of people on the Soap Box at any one time.

Further, interest in the site in total is down. I can recall when the paysites alone would have over one hundred people online during the day. Today, when I checked; the totals during most of the day were less than twenty. (You can't blame that on the Soap Box.)

Second, you suggest that there are only a handful that post on the Soap Box. Yet, the Mods never apply that logic to the other forums. So how many “regular” posters are on the GLBTQ forum as an example? So by that logic; does that mean the GLBTQ forum should be taken down?

Third, you suggest the posters on the Soap Box don't “follow general public communications rules and conventions” Perhaps, the Mods are ignorant to the fact that politics is a blood sport with strong feelings on all sides. (Perhaps the Mods feel that social media sites like Facebook should prevent fans of sports teams from expressing strong opinions about their team and how they relate to other teams?)

Finally, I must point out the irony. The big fear that the Mods worried about were “flame” wars between a handful of posters. That, of course, never happened. In fact, most of the infractions issued were to people that wanted to discuss the issues as sparked by a “cartoon.”

The irony is the Mod decided to take down the Soap Box because there were no big fights. For example, I have self-restrained myself from creating new threads.

For example, a late night comedian verbally attacked a 9 year old boy because he wrote a letter to President Trump.

Or, his mother tried to get bakeries in the Stanton, Ca area to make “Make America Great Again” cake which they refused.

Or, all the scandals of the Democrats from the meeting between Former President Clinton and then AG Lynch to the IT guy that worked for the DNC?

Frankly, given how few posts were actually made to the Soap Box over it's total run it is surprising to me that the four Mods are “complaining of overwork.” (It would be like a blogger that posts his opinions of the issues of the day. That then complains there is “too” much news to write about.)

BTW: If the Mods think they have embargoed politics from Dimensions; then they are fooling themselves. For example, when Hyde Park went dark the anti-Trump people started to put up anti-trump posts on the GLBTQ forum. That could happen again.

Hopefully others can chime in -but, I will make my points brief

1. The success or failure of the Soapbox - is a time for "all" parties to reflect what has gone on. Also, In the end of the day you have to consider this...

A. If Hyde Park had only one Moderator "BBD" and things went ok for a long while. Folks said their piece and what was said in the "Political" forums stayed in the Political forums.

- Now you have to ask yourselves... why did the new system fail with multiple moderators (guess "deputy" badges should have been handed out to everyone) OR the System that was put in placed was flawed and unrealistic from the start.

B. Politics in the US has become increasingly polarized - look at the way folks get their News (Traditional, CBS, ABC, NBC etc. 'real news' - Fox 'delusional shit' , trump Facebook 'state/fake news') etc. etc. I cannot say if this holds true for political discussion in forums outside of the US

2. Folks debate - it's not the end of the world and there is nothing wrong with verbal debate - if politics is not in one's cup of tea and if they don't have a thick skin - don't go into the forum.

3. Furthermore... Not all Forums in Dims is everyone's cup of tea either... try mashing (BBW Forum- Pay site - GLBTQ- BHM - BBW- FFA /FA - Feeder -Fantasy ) into one giant group and watch then you will have a real shit storm to begin...

As I said before, open it up to free speech. Can't handle it then leave. Ended up with too many chiefs and too many rules so I gave up. I live to piss off Trump on Twitter now. Sorry it had to end here. Mommy4-aka cinnamitch

1. folks/mods would "freak" at the sort of opening things up to free speech.. it would simply reveal that folks of size come in all flavors - some good others ... not so good ....

I tend to believe that even though former Hyde Park was often referred to as a cess pool, sadly it was one of the most "intellectual" parts of this site. Without discussion beyond what's for dinner, a love of fatties or how hot someone's ass is, this whole damn site will be a yawn fest.
Unless of course you just come to see free pics of fat chicks screwing themselve with dildos.
The attitude of "what is proper" does strike me as ludicrous on what is essentially one step away from just being another fetish/porn site.

No Soap Box? no debate? no politics? Then what is left?

Oh yeah....the picture threads....just not cartoons, though.

Time will tell whether it was a cesspool, or a necessary wetlands for the biosphere of Dimensions. I believe we've seen the loss of a necessary wetland. Yes, laden with snakes and creepy-crawlies but necessary nonetheless. You don't need to visit a wetland to benefit from it.

With that being the case, I should probably ask - is it acceptable to post political news in the LGBTQ forum that is directly relevant to the LGBTQ community? And if so, is it acceptable for non-LGBTQ people to come into the LGBTQ forum and attack LGBTQ people for their responses to that news?

Not sure if this would be an issue- isn't the LGBTQ Forum a protected space as are the other sub-groups...

Hey.. seeing that many of the folks here have bought up good points -curious that there have been no comments from the mods - where are they hiding ?..
1. timeout?
2. Mar A Lago?...

The mod team are watching the thread and reading your comments. Certainly food for thought. I don't feel that there is anything else that needs to be said on our end about this issue though.

Figured I'd weigh in on the closing as well.

It's probably for the best as we the denizens got exactly what we wanted. Because there were some issues and some mild dissatisfaction with the way BBD moderated at times we wanted a change. Well, we got one. It wasn't a good one either. This board got moderated to death. Literally.

For better or ill, politics around here is predominantly American in nature and as such is highly contentious (it shouldn't be IMO but it is) and fractured. The problem I think was having too many international mods involved in the running of this board. Whenever a discussion did start to arise, because it had the possibility of conjuring up strong feelings on either side the mods stamped out the thread and locked them down quickly. I'm not generally one to play the PC card, because too many people hide behind that as an excuse to be an asshole but in this instance I think it is fitting. If the opposing point of view was not the Politically Correct one it was seen as being hateful and the discussion kiboshed before it could even take off.

What Hyde Park needed was a scalpel wielded evenly and fairly. What we got was a meat cleaver chopping chunks out of it. It didn't take long before people didn't want to bother discussing anything because we knew either our post would be stricken from the thread or the thread would be locked down.

I still stand by the fact that this is an adult site with adult posters. As long as no one is threatening actual physical violence then anything else is fine. Think someone is a moron, fine tell them. Think they are a waste of perfectly good semen? Who cares? It's just words on a screen. If you're too delicate to have someone not like you and strongly disagree with you then maybe a political board is not the place for you. Now, should it be like this? No I don't think so, but the sad reality is that it is. No one really cares what the other person has to say anyway. They just want to further state their own beliefs and think anyone that doesn't agree is an idiot or hateful or both. Because of this I think trying to legislate it in the manner y'all went about it was doomed to failure. So that's why I think closing it down is for the best. We all know the only way it could work and continue on is not the way y'all would want it to go and in truth the fact that people can't or won't consider an opposing thought or difference in ideology makes it all just an exercise in mental masturbation anyway.
