Only six more months I will have to go to the 70s board. It is rather sobering to realize that it is unlikely that I will be around for five more years. It is extremely unlikely that I will be around for 10 more years. Any long-term planning has to involve pushing up daisies. How sad.

Once you make it to age 70, the average lifespan becomes 87. And that is what 50% of 70 year olds will live to. Half will live longer. So take heart Russell, us old coots may still be hangin' around for a while.

Well, there are absolutely no guarantees. My dad seemed to be in great shape, yet he signed off when he was just a few years older than I am now. My mom, on the other hand, is 90 and just keeps on trucking, sharp and independent and competent as ever. I do hope I take after her.

One of these days, I have no doubt, humanity will figure out what aging is all about. I mean, things don't feel any different inside, there's no real physical reason to go downhill, yet the bod gets ever more rickety until things give out.

In a way, it's a crying shame. Just as folks have learned enough to not make the same mistakes again, just as they have gotten a real grasp on how it all works, they wither and die. I guess it has to be that way so way can be made for the fresh new pups who then have to repeat the whole cycle.

I so wish I knew how it all worked.

My mom is 94 and is still kicking ass. I'll be 68 next month and am still doing my thang.

The only thing worse than getting old is the alternative.

I will also tell them to have the following necessities ready for your installation in the new board: an English translator & spell checker, at least three dedicated phone lines - one to your local city council, one to your local mayor, and one to the Democratic National Committee. Plus, you will probably be needing a poker dealer, some fresh decks & poker chips, and one of those little green poker eye shields for Louise.

It is rather sobering to realize that it is unlikely that I will be around for five more years. Why don't you plan on retiring at somewhere warm and with a slow life style like Key West, Savannah, or Corpus Christi (or where ever Louis wants to go)?

I would like to remind you that a little over a month ago in the Health Forum, you declared that you would gladly give up your place in heaven (or a local poker tournament) to your wife Louise. You're not altering that beautiful, romantic sentiment are you?
