Default Carnie Wilson develops Bell's Palsy

http://www.ibtimes.com/carnie-wilson...-okay-1134995#

While the article remarks Bells Palsy is sometimes caused by a viral infection, it overlooks that central nervous system damage can also be caused by vitamin B12 deficiencies, like those caused by malnutrition based WLS procedures like the Fobi Pouch (a Roux-en-Y-like procedure) Carnie had initially.

http://www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/e...cle/002403.htm

Since she admitted to the visible damage (the face drooping of Bells Palsy) it makes me wonder what other non-visible CNS issues she is having (tingling, loss of feeling, or weakness). At least the initial Bell's Palsy has passed.

My best friend had that. There were some facial exercises he had to do to keep working the muscles in his face. Hope she can recover from it. It takes time.

I had Bell's Palsy as a student from a viral infection (no WLS involved).

They tried some IV treatments and the facial gymnastics for 2 weeks and nothing happened. Then I went to my regular ear-nose-throat specialist who gave me 4 immunoglobulin shots over the course of 4 days - and it was gone in a week, never to return.

It seems to be a condition many doctors are rather clueless about, also as to the therapy. I was extremely lucky - and am very sad this very competent doctor, who was clearly very well read on all therapy options for many illnesses, now retired 2 years ago.

Bell's Palsy seems to be a fairly common side effect of WLS. Luckily when Bell's Palsy is related to WLS it usually clears up in a few weeks.

I developed Bell's palsy in 1987 after a bad sinus infection. The left side of my face was paralyzed for several months. If I closed my eyes, the right one closed right away while the left one closed slowly. If I held a jar of Vicks Vapo-Rub under my nose, I could only smell it on the right side.

Gradually, the paralysis went away and has not returned.
