Default Plan B ineffective for women over 176lbs

http://www.mommyish.com/2013/11/25/m...er-176-pounds/

Quote:
The European manufacturer of an emergency contraceptive pill identical to Plan B, also known as the morning-after pill, will warn women that the drug is completely ineffective for women who weigh more than 176 pounds, and begins to lose effectiveness in women who weigh more than 165 pounds. HRA Pharma, the French manufacturer of the European drug, Norlevo, is changing its packaging information to reflect the weight limits. European pharmaceutical regulators approved the change on November 10, but it has not been previously reported.

As has been commented on several other sites, at many heights, being over 176 pounds is not considered obese. In addition, an athletic woman with more muscle may very well weigh over 176 pounds and not be obese.

I don't understand why they can't apply science and make, say, a different brand for women weighing over 176. Fat shaming is not the answer here.

The problem seems not to be the dosage, but something about hormones in the body. Fat people have a different hormone makeup than skinny people (adipose stuff) and so upping the dosage does nothing. It's really unfortunate. For some people, Plan B would have been the only possible method of contraception if a condom broke or slipped or wasn't available. This is some pretty awful news.

For someone who is definitely over 176 pounds and has used plan b multiple times, it's pretty upsetting to find that it has a weight restriction. However, there are other emergency contraceptives like Ella that apparently are way more effective.
