Thumbs down Man Sues After Losing Legs Following WLS

The doctor involved in this surgery advertises his WLS services quite heavily on Dallas TV stations.

Carlos Saucedo was living in Coppell (Texas) when he said he was enticed by a bariatric surgery website that states "it's about changing your life."

But he said that change was very much for the worse. "Everything just kind of just crashed down in my mind," Saucedo said. "I was kind of in shock.

Saucedo, who now lives in South Texas, said when he reached 275 pounds in 2013, he turned to North Texas surgeon Dr. David Kim for a gastric sleeve procedure. But a new lawsuit says before the operation, Saucedo learned that Dr. Kim wouldn't actually be the one performing the surgery; it alleges that the doctors who did operate made some mistakes that could have killed him.

"He's fortunate to be alive," said Saucedo's attorney, Douglas Wood.

One of the dirty little secrets of the WLS industry is that not all surgeons are created equal. Some surgeons have much better records (and some really scary records).

The same type of last minute switch happened to my wife when she had her first WLS at UCLA. The surgeon who subbed in was a total hack and almost killed my wife. She had to undergo what is know as a revision several years later. Indeed her second doctor's practice centers on fixing other doctors screw-ups.

If a person is going to have WLS they need to do some research (not easy) to assure themselves that their doctor knows what he's doing. And make sure your doctor is actually the one who's doing the surgery.

Sometimes it's false advertising (bait-and-switch) and sometimes it's gaming the insurance system (Patient gets approval for Doc A, who is in-network; surgery is performed by Doc B who is not in-network, insurer either pays the out-of-network surcharge or the patient does).

But the healthcare industry wouldn't have made any money.

And there's the first sign of a future problem. Any product or service advertised heavily should be avoided, at least from that advertiser.
