Default Immigrants commit fewer crimes

The Los Angeles Times reports that immigrants commit fewer crimes -- fewer minor crimes and fewer violent crimes. In immigrant neighborhoods, crimes go down. Immigrants are shown to revitalize failing neighborhoods.

"The findings exonerating the foreign-born are equally consistent. A sizable body of scientific research conducted by criminologists, sociologists and economists indicates that: Neighborhoods with more immigrants have lower rates of crime; an influx of immigrants has been shown to decrease crime; and that foreign-born individuals commit less crime than their U.S.-born peers."

"These patterns hold not just for minor offenses, but also for serious violent crimes. Some have suggested that immigrants may actually revitalize communities and lessen crime."

As for the Los Angeles Times as a source? It's owned by Tribune Publishing, which also publishes the famously conservative Chicago Tribune.

Its founder and first owner was an "unabashed capitalist and free-marketer," steadfastly opposing labor unions, the eight-hour work day, and child labor laws.

More recently: "Following the Republican Party's defeat in the 2006 mid-term elections, an Opinion piece published on November 19, 2006, by Joshua Muravchik, a leading neoconservative and a resident scholar at the conservative American Enterprise Institute, was titled BOMB IRAN. The article shocked some readers, with its hawkish comments in support of more unilateral action by the United States, this time against Iran."

How nice the LA Times found that out for the LA immigrant population.

But 'immigrants commit fewer crimes' as a blanket generalization is just as incorrect as 'all immigrants are criminals'.

Their crime rate depends on a number of factors, which actually strongly vary according to which immigrants and where we're talking about.

Most decisive variable actually is demographic composition of the immigrant group. If it's complete families that come, then crime rates will be low.

If it's mainly the potential bread-winners, possibly from patriarchal societies, meaning working age men - then the crime rates will be high/er.

Simply because in all societies the demography with the highest crime rates are men ages 15-40 (Female criminal offenders >65 in contrast are virtually non-existent).

There are a number of other factors you can check for - socio-economic integration, crime culture in the societies of origin, discrimination, ratio of offenses that can only be committed by non-nationals (like violations of residency laws, often major contributor to immigrant crime rates, etc.)

As with most things in life - it the fine print that tells the full story.

Immigration is the United States' largest competitive advantage. Immigrants drive our industry, and our system of higher education, grow our food, and create demand that grows our economy. We discourage immigration at our own peril.

Yet, everyone with a functioning brain cell understands; there is a world of difference between legal immigration and illegal immigration.

Everyone with a functioning brain cell understands that the path to legal immigration in the United States is so labyrinthine and so backlogged that it takes up to 40 years to gain legal residency status by going through the system. No, I am not suggesting that people should just cavalierly break the law. I am suggesting a systemic reboot, perhaps a hard drive wipe, is needed.

And, Agouderia, your points are well taken. The Times study took all of that into account. I showed just a snippet of a much longer piece.
