Question Cakes "frosted" with gum paste - yummy?

I've been watching the Food Network again. This time its Ace of Cakes and I notice the cake trend these days is to use gum paste as opposed to traditional frosting.

My question is... who has had a gum paste 'frosted' cake? Did you actually eat the gum paste? How did it compare to frosting?

What about the cake inside? Did the gum paste seem to affect the cake's texture or flavor?

I also notice they use something called molding chocolate or sculping chocolate or something like that. You know what I'm talking about if you've seen it... They made the 'tires' for the Jeep cake out of it.

What does that taste like? Is it actually chocolate?

Modeling chocolate tastes very much like a Tootsie Roll, but it's also very difficult to work with compared to some other cake coverings. In this case, you'd leave it on to eat, but still put a thin layer of icing underneath like you would with fondant.

You can get recipes on the web. I got a bunch when I was planning my wedding cake [the original design called for fondant which I felt wouldn't be eaten] but we ended up doing a basic buttercream with melted chocolate in it instead.

Gum paste is what they make the fancy flowers and stuff from ahead of time. When I was little our babysitter was taking a cake decorating class and she used to practice the flowers. We got to eat them. They're mostly sugar/sucrose etc and the little beggers get hard as rock after several days.

Sexy Hockey Player Look!!! LOL =)

Its the flower stuff! I had no idea. My mum used to make flowers and things for cake out of that stuff, but I've never seen her 'frost' a cake with it. So I've eaten it a dozen times and I didn't even know. Do they call it anything besides gum paste or fondent? Because I don't recall mum using those terms for it.

Honestly, it didn't have much 'flavor' other than sickly sweet after a couple of licks. I would rather have real butter creme frosting or even better... chocolate!

I believe this 'paste' is the standard cake icing over here. At least, I think this is what you're talking about.

Soft, right? Similar texture to marzipan? Or are we talking the stuff that dries hard? Either way, it's probably a similar sort of stuff with a slightly different composition.
