Great things about being fat--loved it!

The missus and I watched the whole thing.

AMAZING to see a light-hearted, playfully fun and quite empowering look at fat.

Also, everybody see our own Lisa Brounstein?

Best moments:

1. Discussion of the media's habit of showing fat people from the neck down. You can show people smoking or drinking in bars with full face, but for some reason fat people must be headless, or mayhem will result!

2. The use of a tuba as soundtrack when a fat person comes on camera in a movie or tv show. Somehow that instrument has become associated with fat people.

3. How a fat nickname gives you more street cred.

Some gripes:

1. One of the reasons it's great to be fat, they said, was "You're already fat---you can eat!" They showed men wolfing down food, but not women. Ladies still aren't allowed to be gluttons on TV.

2. Too long--a half hour would have been better.

3. They featured people who are no longer fat, like Ann Wilson and Anna Nicole Smith. But the program was shot a while ago, I reckon.

Good program...wish I could have been on it and given my 2 cents!

The special was pretty fun, they showchased some of my favorites like Jackie Gleason, Orson Wells and Rerun. Could have done without Oprah, Rosie O'Donnell and Rosanne though. Don't recall if they featured Carnie Wilson at all. Just as well, since she's become thin she's now loud and annoying.

Thanks for giving those of us who don't have television reception a little glimpse. You know, I think they do that to dehumanize us. We're just blobby bodies without faces, without eyes, without smiles.

Got it recorded (first time it was broadcasting, it came on opposite the BBC America series Sea of Souls, which we've both gotten hooked on in my house) and hope to have a chance to see it within the next day or so . . .

HA...I know how that is! Guy and I are hooked on "Medium", and Great to be Fat was on opposite...so we had to tape also. Maybe I will watch it this afternoon and see how it is.

yeah, she was there. it was the yo-yo dieters part of the show. they showed her fat, then showed her thin. it was a "blink-and-you-miss-it" type deal.

the reason they usually show fat people from the neck down is that if they show their faces, they have to get a consent form signed. and who really wants to sign a consent form to be shown on the news special about how fat americans are?

i mean, other than people who frequent this board.

Possibly true (I also think there's an element of condescending dehumanizing happening here, but that's just me). But as the show itself points out, news shows don't have the same problem if they're, say, doing a segment on smokers . . .
