I went down to South Texas for some beach time. No Internet access and I played a lot of EU2. Good times.

Now I come back and my site's gone down with an ASP error. Oh well. My ISP will reboot it in the morning when he gets my email.

Nice to see you all again. No way am I going to go back over ALL one bazillion topics posted to in my absence, though. Some will just have to be bumped if my presence there is truly, deeply desired.

BTW, how come I can't see my own posts in "new posts"? I miss that feature...

Hmm... that may be because of a different setting. One of the ops observed "I find that when I pop in to the forums to check a thread, the cookies (or however it's done) react as though I have read all new posts in all forums since my last visit. If I come back later, I can't tell what I have and haven't read without going into each thread."

I looked into that and found in the vBulletin help that there are three ways to mark posts as read/unread:

Inactivity/Cookie Based - once a user has been inactive for a certain amount of time (the value of the cookie timeout option) all threads and forums are considered read. Individual threads are marked as read within a session via cookies.

This option is how all versions of vBulletin before 3.5 functioned.

Database (no automatic forum marking) - this option uses the database to store thread and forum read times. This allows accurate read markers to be kept indefinitely. However, in order for a forum to be marked read when all threads are read, the user must view the list of threads for that forum.

This option is more space and processor intensive than inactivity-based marking.

Database (automatic forum marking) - this option is the same as a previous option, but forums are automatically marked as read when the last new thread is read.

The default setting is option 1, but that causes the syndrome described. So I changed it to option 3, which, according to the observer, fixed it. Tour experience seems different. To me, it made no difference as I never look at those icons.

What's the conclusion?

Well, I messed with a setting in my options just now, but I did it to see if it would trigger a display of my posts in the "New Posts" window, like it used to.

I used to be able to post, check "new posts" and see the threads in relation to my last post. Ones older than that were ones I'd already read that session. Ones newer than my post were ones that had been modified as I typed. It helped me keep my orientation on the forum as to what was newer and what I'd already read.

Let me see if that change made any difference...
