FAism and heritage.

After coming out of the FA closet to one of my friends more recently he mentioned something along lines of "Your Irish so it's really no surprise you like larger women." Which started me thinking, is it true that where you hail from basedon it's traditions cand culture can influence preferences of this nature? I mean it is rather common for and Irishman or Scotsman to try to take home the stout barmaid after a few pints of well stout lol.
So I pose the question to the masses of the internet, what are your opinions?

I think it's fair to say that a broad streak of fat admiration runs down the italian side of my family...

Good question.
For some: I think that would be true. One thing I do know is that some young men learn their family and cultural and history as children. Sometimes there are certain views they will go with.
The Venus of Willendorf (And similar figures) have been discovered in many parts of Eurasia. There's actually this guy on youtube who posted a video about it. I forget what country he is from in Europe, but he said as a teenager he loved larger women because it was something that his culture believed in. He learned to like thinner women, but like I said: It was something he experimented with.

For me it's more of a stereotype that I'm supposed to like larger women. I know for a fact my family has nothing to do with it because I conditioned myself to like them and there aren't very many people in my family that believe in Size Acceptance.
I liked thinner women when I was a child, but I had a few situations that made me think about larger women. I was exposed to much fat hatred from family and friends as I matured, so I can't say that really helped me.
It just kept progressing over time. First I thought large breasts, then I moved to butts, and then just to larger everything. I was exclusive for a small amount of time in the closet, but that went away.
Stereotypically speaking, society would deem that because of my race, I am supposed to like large butts and in some cases larger women. Again: my preference is my own thing.
In my opinion, it's both a nature and nurture thing, but I think some people are conditioned to like a certain thing based on the world around them. I generally accept that conditioning has a bigger effect on most people, but I can't say that for everyone.

you raise some good points Jon, one of which I was trying to avoid and was the african american steriotype in an effort to remain PC but hell its an issue you can't avoid i suppose. In all honesty I think mine comes from an effort to get back to ym roots. My family has completely americanized in only 3 generations, so much so that we have lost our pedagree, purpously on the part of my great grandfather, and I'm only 3/4 Irish. My parents aren't proud of our heratige because of the cleichs involved (even thoguht my dad drinks like an Irishman constantly >_>) It just blows that we are a branch of one of the more famous liniages in Ireland (McPhearson Clan) nd they try to hide it.

Because I was not raised around the ideals of my home culture I really don't think mine is neccisairily only the mentioned attempt to be more like my ancestors becauses I have always been attracted to large women. Case and point the first girl I ever liked. I was 9 and she was 16. She was my babysitter and a beautiful 450 pound young woman. I got to know her better as I got older and eventually to the point where she spilled the beans on her numbers and admited to have gained some in the later years of our relationship. it was one of those I wish I was back to the weight when i was in high school, conversations. But also I take into account some of the things she did with me that also could have influenced my preference or at least kindled the pre-programmed feelings. She would cuddle me between her belly and legs (she had a big belly) for fun when it got late and I was falling asleep. She was very confidnt about her body and wore two peice bikinis when she took me to the pool. Small things like I credit it more to than my heritage because like I said wasn't raised in my culture.

It seems that in America black and latino men are more likely to unabashedly express a strong attraction to fat women than are whites. But I suspect this is not because there are more FAs in these ethnic groups but rather they feel less inhibited to admit their preference. In other words a larger percentage of white FAs are in the closet. But this is just my wild speculation so who really knows.

This is something I've wondered about as well. I've always assumed that my FAism comes from my childhood experiences, and I have fairly plausible theories as to how it happened, but on the other hand, I've wondered lately if there isn't some sort of cultural or genetic component to it as well.

I'm Pennsylvania Dutch (i.e., German) on my mom's side, and at a rest stop in rural PA last winter I picked up a pamphlet, reprinted from the early 20th century, called something like "Humor, Folklore and Customs of the Pennsylvania Germans." To my surprise, there were a lot of jokes (and some hilarious engravings which I'll post on Dims next time I have access to a scanner) about how the Dutch have a preference for fatter women! Maybe there's some sort of "FA gene" which gets activated under the right circumstances...

ive often wondered this myself. i'm an ex-hasidic jew, as some of you guys know, and i thought, "hmmm, well since my ancestors lived in the shtetl, where food was hard to come by, maybe they appreciated the buxom women more." it certainly seems true that many famous yiddish theater actresses of the early 20th century were bigger.

i dont know. either way young hasids are falling more and more into the hollywood standards.

That's certainly an interesting question. I have had FA feelings for as far back as I can remember even though I grew up in Switzerland where there literally were no fat people at all. So what I dreamed and fantasized about didn't even exist there. Go figure. As far as I am concerned, the orientation must have some sort of genetic component, i.e. I believe nature is sending us on a mission. Perhaps we're created to counteract the tremendous pressure of the diet industry that is trying to literally wipe out the fat gene by making fat people look unattractive and undesirable, and thus, from a larger perspective, doomed to extinction. So perhaps we're agents dispatched to make sure the fat gene lives on, as it'll surely be needed again. Wild theory, I know, but I'm always looking for the big picture.

Mostly Irish and German here, with a hint of Dutch also. Cant say that heritage plays a role at least with me. As far back as I can remember, I have always had an eye for larger women. I always wondered where the FA in me came from, and after hearing a story from my mother not too long ago I may have the answer. One of my aunts on my fathers side is a ssbbw. When I was a baby she would hold me and then lay me on her chest and belly while she was sitting and I would fall right to sleep everytime. She did this with all the kids, but my mom said I was always the one that seemed to enjoy it the most. Just shows that nothing is quite as comfy as a soft woman.

While ultimately I prefer not to have a 'reason' for liking the larger figure, if I had to say whether heritage had anything to do with it, I'd say no. Looking at the trajectory of my preferences, there is no way to miss the direct influence environment had on my desires. Since neither of my parents identify with any heritage other than 'white American,' I don't think my attraction to the larger form has anything to do with where my ancestors came from or where my parents came from.

I do think that my parents were the biggest influence on my preferences, but that had more to do with their beliefs about America's larger views on fat people, so in that respect, then yeah, maybe being a 'white American' has influenced my love of the larger figure. Plus, as a fat person myself, if I like my figure, wouldn't I also be more prone to liking others with a similar build? Not saying that this should be the case for everyone, but in my life I think it is a big part of my preference for larger figures.

Hehe... you HAVE tried awfully hard for me to nuke you, but I am not easily offended. Anyway, as for the opinion, I certainly didn't mean it made FAs special in any way, it was just a speculation as to why nature might make some of us FAs. Might as well lay all potential possibilities on the table.
