Default Congratulations to GeorgeNL for his PhD.

Not many people obtain the coveted PhD degree. George says he recently was awarded this degree. He joins Conrad who also has a PhD. Congratulations, George!

Congrats, GeorgeNL. Yes, I know all the work that goes into it, and also what it eventually brings and what it doesn't. When I was doing my post-graduate work, the joke was that PhD stood for "piled higher and deeper," and that those who get the degree are simply those who hang around school longest. There was also the inherent expectation by everyone that one would then join academia with the goal of an eventual professorship, something that was never in my plans.

Once they go out there, a lot of PhDs find themselves in the weird position of having stellar academic credentials, but much less actual life and business experience than their lesser educated friends and competitors. Depending on the nature of the dissertation, there may also be elation or disappointment on what is actually done with all the work that goes into the dissertation. After all this time I am convinced that my 1979 work in analyzing energy usage patterns and offering complex multiple regression tools for quantitative measurement and prediction of same, made policy, could have resulted in massively lower energy consumption and dependence on foreign oil by now. Back then, my advisors considered approaching Washington with my work, but then didn't.

Instead, I embarked on my career where I found that the Ph.D. often opened doors that otherwise would have remained closed, so the time getting the extra degree was not wasted. And the research and statistical analysis skills I picked up came in handy in numerous ways.

So congrats, George. I hope it was all worth it for you as well.

Gefeliciteerd! (congrats, in dutch)

I never made it to the PhD stage. I'm a BA, MS, MA, but no PhD. So I have an inkling of your impressive work!

Thank you very much freinds!

Yes, last month I finally received my Ph.D. or as Conrad says the "Pile higher and deeper" degree. To explain that joke:

BS = Bull Shit.
MS = More Shit.
and then the ultimate:
PhD = Pile higher and deeper.

The last years were quite though, because I had to finish the writing while I had already a full time job. So every night and weekend I was working on my thesis.
But it is finally behind, and I still need to get used to all the freedom!

Although hard work, it was certainly very nice too. I had to crack a physics problem that we didn't understand. And I got all the freedom to set up experiments and computer simulations to crack it. It took me more then a year to figure out what was going on, but actually during a walk on beach I suddenly understood it. It's not a big break through or so, but for me it was a very nice moment. After setting up another experiment to test the theory, I was so very happy that I hugged the secretary of our group. She was a bit confused at that moment, but said that she hoped for more break throughs :-). We had a lovely secretary.

The subject I've worked on is design of electromagnetically compatible electronics. This is about prevention of interference problems between electronic devices. Especially wireless equipment (mobile phones, wireless network cards etc.) can easily interfere with other electronics (radios, medical equipment etc.). That is why phones and laptops have to be switched off during take off and landing of a plane. I've developed techniques to design electronics such that it becomes much less senstive to interference.

I didn't stay at the university either, and currently work as a designer of electronics for a semiconductor company.

Conrad, what did you use to write your thesis those days? Was that still a typewriter? As a dyslexic, I am very happy with computers and spell checkers.

Indeed, congratulations are in order. I know that my measly (in comparison) degree is something I'm very proud of, so I can only imagine the satisfaction of getting that far along. I admire the dedication and drive it took to get there!

I wrote mine in 1979. Everyone else did it on an IBM Selectric typewriter, but I applied for, and received, special permission to do it on the first mainframe wordprocessor from on a primitive Teletype terminal, and then print it out on a mainframe lineprinter. It wasn't pretty, but certainly beat the wordprocessor. If I did it over again I'd be much harder on my advisory committee to give me the proper guidance, and I'd make sure I'd tackle a much more narrowly defined topic.

I think George is being modest here. That work should be important when applied. If he can solve interference problems he should be able to work on solving other interesting problems.

I hope George leaves himself some time to explore the mysteries of the corporeal universe.

I recognice that very very well! I received no guidance at all, as our group was going through a reorganization with many lay-offs that took years. I had no supervisor the first years. And as a beginner, I was way to ambitious, missing the focus you need for good result. The first two years I was going in almost every direction. I'm sure that with some guidance, it would have been ready much earlier.
