Default Fake tan? Love it or hate it?

I HATE IT!!!!

i fail to understand the use in painting ones body orange/brown, only for it to be streaky, rinse off, sweat off, stain clothes or palms and also it STINKS!!

however i have girlfriends that couldnt possibly live without it. in fact one girlfriend wouldnt come on an inpromptu night out as she hadnt done her tan!

I'm also sick of being told i NEED it! ive been told it'll make me look slimmer (HOW?!?!?) and that without it i look like a ghost. i dont. i look milky white and rubenesque and i quite like it that way.

the reason i bring this up now is i have decided to hell with covering my arms, which i have done all my life, i am wearing a strapless dress for the xmas party. gorgeous it is, black and kinda has a gold speckle running through it, flares out at the bottom and ruches at the side.

am wearing it with leopard print shoes and a matching leopard print clutch, and a big black bow in my hair.

ive been told by at least 3 ppl (including a man but he was gay and wears more make up than me) that i HAVE TO WEAR TAN!

so whats ur opinions?

to tan or not to tan, that is the question!

They do always seem to look maybe a little off or bit orange-ish in color. Better for you than tanning booths or getting fried at the beach though. I guess I am just kind of indifferent to fake tans on other people. I would never do it though.

It's one of those things I say, if you like it, good for you. More power to you and your vaguely oompa loompa skin shade.

But if I want to tan, I'll just fry out in the sun. I don't go near the fake tanning stuff. Though it's not like I tan often, I usually do it during the summer sometimes for fun. That's about it.

I agree with you. I really dislike tans, fake or real. I hear the same arguments all the time from people, and I completely ignore it. It's your body, so do what you want.

What can I say.....I hate the crap with a passion you can only imagine....having said that, I do use it occasionaly on my legs if I am planning on wearing something that shows them. I am deathly pale otherwise, to a degree that frightens little old ladies, small children, and domestic animals. I don't tan in the sun, bcs I've had a brush with skin cancer, and I just don't think that having a nice tan is worth it.

i just dont think i look right with a tan. i think if i was meant to have one, then i wouldnt break out in freckles, get sunstroke, burn and peel every summer despite wearing factor 50!

essentially its just another way to try to get ppl to conform. every magazine i seem to read in the past week has a feature about getting your glow on in time for xmas! who has a tan in december! of course its fake or sunbeds!

it just bugs the life outta me how someone who is 4 different colours all over thinks they look better than me lol!

Well yeah, it's certainly not for everyone.
It is a little odd to me why tanning is such a hit, I think, overall, fair skin is much more beautiful. My opinion at least.

I just do it for fun occasionally in the summer. I think I like tanning more than being tanned. Lounging in the sun on the beach or our deck. Highly relaxing, get some music on, and bake. I'll admit the peeling skin and sunburn though... yeah, that's not so fun.

i'll certainly agree i think milky white skin is so beautiful its very botticelli like. but if someone naturally tans then they look gorgeous with it. its the faking it, or baking yourself in a sunbed that seems very unnatural to me!
i envy u being able to lie in the sun! my last holiday was to prague where it was minus 5 most days suited me well lol!

I won't do the bottle tan...it's too fake. I will go to a tanning bed in the spring, summer and fall though, but not religiously. I will go out without it.

As far as going sleeveless... GO FOR IT!! I just went sleeveless for my reunion and I NEVER go sleeveless. It was very liberating...and I'm proud of myself. You'll feel the same way.

I think it's a great invention! I wear sun powder in the face (at special occations body lotion with a bit of color) to get a healthy glow through the winter months.
But I have a certain "look" so if I overdo it, I look like an overweight pornstar (damn you blonde hair)
Just don't overdo it and you will look drop dead sexy!

btw
you looked great in that dress Violet

Oh wow, I couldn't stand that. I have to have a nice summer, I adore the beach.
Of course there's a bit of planning to it. I hate going to crowded beaches and I'm definitely not going to be wearing a bikini around anybody but my spouse.
So we looked around until we found a little area of beach nobody seems to ever visit, which isn't surprising, you have to walk around the bend of a beach at the end of a town called Strathmere, which is a very uncrowded town/beach at the end of the main island with Ocean City and other Jersey beaches, then walk under a bridge and around a small bend to get to the beach. It's our own little slice of heaven.

It depends, it works on some poeple but not otherrs. Anything in moderation is good. I go from time to time, especially before I go away. I have olive skin so I tan very easy.

Just say "no" to fake tans! My yellowy-olive, pale Italian skin just looks like mud has been swiped over it whenever I try fake tan products. If I want a tan, I gotta work for it outside.

Fake tan only works if the person wearing it gets a natural tan anyway, it generally looks rubbish on naturally pale people.

Ahem, Case Study 1: Nicola 'Girls Aloud' Roberts (ginge in denial)

Attachment 31475

Lovely and natural (well I think the hair has had some work, but it's pretty close)

Attachment 31476

Covered in mud, sorry, fake tan and looking odd, aged and just plain wrong.

Stay pale and interesting Bex, it's much more beautiful to flaunt what mother nature gave you.

As a woman who wears her caramel complexion well, I do not for the life of me, understand why fairer skinned women would do this. I mean, if your skin is light...why not see the beauty in that and the same for darker sistas.

It's so interesting because some white women want to be tan/dark, however, some women of color want to be lighter...why can't we just love the skin we are in?

Also, I don't think one shade of skin is prettier than another...to me, if you have smooth, unblemished skin that is healthy and glowing, it doesn't matter if your skin is of alabaster or if it is so black, its blue.

I always laugh at the claims of a fake tan looking real.......it NEVER does and always looks nasty. I live in Minnesota so it always kills me when you see someone "tan" you just know they are fake baking. Of course in late February/March there are natural tans because everyone flees for a while in the winter.

On a side note......Ash, when I was reading your post and an Oil of Olay commercial was on and right when I got to "love the skin we are in?" it was on the commercial at the same time. Too funny!

Hhhhhate the fake stuff, but, I guess most of us tweak ourselves in some way. I mean, I don't wear any makeup and have never had highlights put in my hair..nooooooo. And I rejoice in my not so even, blemished skin, by leaving it as nature intended...heh. We are funny creatures..most certainly.

Well, I am okay with myself being pale, but being Mediterranean, I really love the color of my skin when I've spent time outdoors. If it wasn't so bad for me, I'd do it a lot more.

I absolutely HATE fake tanners, cause Ive not once seen one actually work. And laying out in the sun/going to tanning salons are BAD NEWS.

A lot of women I know will go to a tanning salon and get a "base tan" before they go on vacation. its probably one of the worst things you can do to your skin. The UVA and UVB rays used in a salon will significantly diminish your skins ability to protect you from the sun's rays. So you do some hardcore tanning for that base tan, and then go lay in the sun for 5 days straight and your chances of getting skin cancer have skyrocketed.

So , I guess if youre dying for that golden brown (leather) look, fake tan is the way to go... but they never look normal.

I understand that -- my maternal grandfather was mediterranean and he tanned beautifully in the summer. I just don't understand the appeal of having your skin look like leather...I think it's sort of silly.

And Mossy -- I do agree with you, that in one shape or form, we all tend to do things to change our natural being...whether it's wearing a push up bra or wearing acrylic on your nails (both of which I engage in and adore)...so I guess it's a "whatever floats your boat" type thing.

I personally hate fake tan and I think it looks fugly, but each to their own I guess. I am caucasian, I am meant to be white, no?

I will never use a solarium either as I am terrified that they could cause cancer if used long term or even just for too long one time.
