Does anyone here like it when an innocent-seeming thread blows up in controversy and dissent? Or when a troll comes on and says something that we all obviously disagree with?
I honestly enjoy it because it makes things interesting. Think how boring it would be if everyone here simply agreed with each other, or just stated their opinion and stepped down, or watered-down their opinions into a pabulum palatable for everyone. So that I don't sound like a complete sadist, I also like how these threads peter off in extended jokes and settled scores. Also the well-intentioned quips from people who obviously missed the carnage or didn't read the 20+ pages of the debate. Last edited by Say Hello to the Angels : 12-22-2007 at 08:19 PM. I like when flame-wars are averted for actually intelligent discussion. However, trolls and flamers are part of the environment of the internet, and complaining about them doesn't really stop them from doing as they please--it actually encourages them. Efforts by moderators to keep such posters, and spammers, at bay are appreciated.
That said, I agree with you that the vitality of the internet is increased immensely by the freedom we have to express our thoughts, whatever they may be. And while I prefer a respectful debate, censorship is uglier than the worst flamewars.

I like when individuals take issue with another poster's innocuous statement and create entire threads to air their minor grievance and provoke silly arguments.

Shit, I just like it to watch the expressions change. If there was nothing to fight about, what would be the sense of this forum? Yes, fight. I could say debate, but that word is weak. It's like Masturbate only without the reward.
C'mon folks, you know it's true. I don't care how nice you are in your "real life", you come here to get your mean on. And there are so many ways of being mean..... you're probobly not even aware that at times, you are being mean. I go through this shit all the time. But seriously, if you come here to be nice or to "educate" the huddled masses, don't you ever feel like you're just wasting your time? Trolls are hatched in the fires of flame wars, and Hyde Park is one of the biggest battle fields known to fat-dom (the online culture of fat people). You can't expect me to believe there is such thing as a civilized debate. There isn't. As long as people feel passionatley about a topic, emotions wil always become involved. Opinons are like cudgels, everybody can't wait to beat you over the head with theirs. You know it's true, or otherwise we would all be hanging out in the lounge or on the main board or something. The hate, the anger, the outrage..... it's all so addicting! ![]()

I disagree! Civilized debate is a battle of brains where, no matter how deep the emotional investment, the parties involved can actually -hear- their opponents' arguments and afterwards remain friends even if nobody's mind was changed at all.

That's between two people that are thinking clearly. Most of the shit around here is so wrapped up in sarcasam and cynicisim that it's hard to tell where there sacarasam ends and the intelligence begins.

I like it when threads sidetrack into issues, like how my puppy one did. It's informative and interesting, and I really didn't expect such a thread to last more than one page.
As for me personally, I prefer to get my intellectual debate on face-to-face... that way shin-kicking can also be utilized. Flaming is fun, and I think that the internet is the great equalizer. It makes it easy to ignore if the "fight" gets out of hand, and is a good way to name-call and insult without actually ruining somebody else's real-life reputation. Basically, it's a healthy way to relieve my inner schoolyard-bully tendencies. |

I have to agree that I do feel amusement when I notice that someone is just commenting on the OP (egads!
) and obviously couldn't be buggered to read the last ten pages of nasty fighting. What's not so funny is when I realize that I just did such a thing....attempting to be funny......and then realize there is a fight going on..............and that I MISSED THE WHOLE DAMN THING! ![]() Sheesh, this is just about the only excitement I have in my life and I MISSED IT ![]()

I'll admit it-I love it when things get heated and crazy and zany and all kinds of messed up on any of the boards here-and I think it might be the main reason I keep coming back. Very rarely do I get upset about something that I read here at Dims, and when I do, I don't mind speaking up about it, and being mean, if need be. But I don't like to be an asshole or mean to someone just because it amuses me, because that is just the internet version of ripping legs off a daddy longlegs, and why be intentionally cruel as a pleasure sport?
But then again, maybe that is the definition of Hyde Park: intentional cruelty as a pleasure sport! Funny thing is, a lot of the time that I do get involved in trying to provoke a debate about something, no one touches my posts with a ten foot pole. I still have a lot to learn about internet communication, it appears. C'est la vie. |

I also enjoy a heated debate, one that gets everyone involved. I even confess a secret thrill when personal rhetoric gets slung around (sorry, mods I'ze just bad that way). Not to the extent that feelings get hurt, though. That's not right.

Flame wars are ridiculous and unnecessary. People need to step back from their computers and take a breath.

Hey,
I don't know about all this. It is not a lot of fun when you are the one having your character attacked and picked apart by others. It is just not. I am glad that some get amusement and entertainment from it. My question is, do you want some fucking popcorn with that? ![]() |

But, I'm not going to apologize for investing my time in reading the good, the bad, and the ugly here-because its all here for us to read. I try not to fan the flames of the unpleasant side of Dims discourse, but if people here are willing to put it out here for me to read, I'm not going to lie and say I find it deplorable. I don't like to see people being hurt, but if it is on a public internet board, I won't feel shame about reading it, even if I don't endorse the behavior in my own life. If I feel I have hurt someone's feelings, I apologize, regardless of what has transpired in a thread, because it is just an internet board-words on a screen, and 99% of you, no matter how much I like you, are not part of my real life. So why hold a grudge against words on a computer screen? If I hurt your feelings, Susannah, I apologize. |
