This probably won't happen, but, since we have been issued a winter weather advisory again for tonight and all day tomorrow (we had a beautiful dusting of about 1 inch day before yesterday but it all melted by the afternoon; an hour to the north of here they had up to a foot), it got me to thinking of how everyone (at least down here in the south) rushes to the grocery store to stock up on stuff at the very hint of snow in the forecast.
So--what are (1) your favorite items to get from the grocery store in those conditions or (2) what dishes do you like to make when you're snowed in? All I can think of right now are homemade vegetable soup, chili, and cheese dip. When my siblings and I were young and at home we used to love to make snow ice cream, with fresh-fallen snow, vanilla flavoring, and evaporated milk. My older brother would take some bottled Cokes and bury them in the snow to chill. Now that's nostalgia! ![]() Apologies if there is already a thread on this. |

This does bring back memories, I grew up in the south too and I remember everyone scrambling to the store in a panic when snow was in the forecast. Of course you had to fight people to get bread, milk and toilet paper the trinity of snow supplies.
I can remember my Mom would usually make a big pot of beef stew or chili and we would have some kind of good crusty bread with it. Now I live in Ohio in the "snow belt" two of the most hated words in the English language to me now, it snows constantly and no one seems phased in the least it could be 18 inches of snow and its business as usual after one day. I still have the instinct to stock up on goodies when I know its going to snow, so I always make sure I have my sodas, ice cream, chips or cookies, the heck with toilet paper and bread we need goodies!! ![]()

Anything that makes the house smell good. It could be a savory stew or maybe molasses cookies, depending on what mood I'm in.

There is! Storm Food...to stock up!
But it's 2 years old, and was started by the great white northeast. I think we were due for a southern storm thread ![]()

sugar and spice - I kept giving the weather updates at the office today, and EVERYONE totally doubts the 8-12 inches they're calling for here in Ohio. As far as I'm concerned, they jinxed it for us. We'll be shoveling out this weekend for sure.
My snowed-in food - well, I'm wanting to make a big pot of creamy broccoli cheese soup with those tiny noodles, and some crusty bread. I'm stocked with the trinity. lol Take care this weekend! |

Well...tonight I just browned a bunch of stew meat, cleaned and halved baby red skin potatoes, and carrots and onions...I ground rosemary and thyme leaves with my mortar and pestle. I also ground a bit of cardamom. I crushed several cloves of garlic and threw it all in the crock pot, and stuck it in the fridge. Tomorrow morning it'll go on low...all day. Right now, even though it's not all cooking, from all the spice grinding and meat browning, the house smells sooo good.
I can't wait to come home from work tomorrow. snow or no snow, and be greeted by the smell of simmering beef stew. ![]()

Oh, yes, I'm remembering this thread now--AnnMarie's Bisquick naivete--folks here in the south know Bisquick well! ![]() I left work a little early (intermitent vacation time while the boss is out), but didn't decide to head out to the store until a little later. Although I got ahead of the big 5:00pm rush, it was madness already--MADNESS!! I made a trip across the river to get cheaper gas. I had to wait in line at the pump, then entered the grocery store. People were EVERYWHERE! There were mothers with their passle of kids with them, elderly folks shuffling along with their carts, and solitary, business-type men rushing around and jockeying for position as though they had more important things to do with their time than the rest of us. It was quite an interesting mix. There wasn't really anything I couldn't have lived without, but, like everyone else, I just felt compelled to grocery shop. I picked up a couple of bags of raw veggies to nibble on with dip, a bag of Fritos for cheese dip, a 2-liter bottle of Coke, and a couple of other things. Oh! And another interesting thing--when I wandered over to the produce section, there was a little BIRD sitting on the produce! I turned around to see if anyone else had noticed and the produce clerk was making his way over. I said, "did you know there was a bird over here?" and he said (kind of wearily, as though he had been asked that question a few times), "yes, he's been there for quite a while now." You know birds like to build their nests up under the eaves, and I guess he got in somehow. I'm not sure why he made the produce section his home, you'd think he'd have preferred the bakery aisle or something. I came home and put on a bag of beans in the crockpot (Tuscan something mix--who knew there were gourmet beans?) and it's been simmering all night. I never got around to eating dinner, so I'll have a good appetite for snacking tomorrow. ![]() No snow falling yet at my house, but we should have something by the time I wake up tomorrow. It supposed to snow all day, but coming down particularly heavy from 2:00pm on until evening. |
