Default Follow Up on the Lane Bryant Murders in Chicago

CHICAGO (CBS) ― It has been more than six weeks since an apparent robbery attempt inside a Tinley Park Lane Bryant store left five women dead.

Now the FBI is taking a close look at a tip from out west. CBS 2 Chief Correspondent Jay Levine reports a robbery suspect in Las Vegas is on the short list of tips pouring in.

The tip, CBS 2 learned, came in from Las Vegas Police around noon Monday.

A surveillance camera captured photos of the man who robbed the Opera House Casino in Las Vegas on Saturday afternoon. They describe him as about 5 feet 10 inches and 250 pounds, which is similar to the description of the Tinley Park killer.

Tinley Park police say there are differences between the suspect and the Lane Bryant killer, but they say they are examining the tip like any other.

But it's a shot of the robber, leaning into the cash cage, showing his short, tightly braided hair that heated up the phone lines between Las Vegas and Chicago's south suburbs. The suspect in Las Vegas however, has 10 or 12 braids, many more than the Tinley Park gunman.

Earlier Monday, a high speed chase ended with that suspect flipping his car, being taken into custody and hospitalized. A suspect in bank and casino robberies in Las Vegas, and now, someone officers investigating the murders at Tinley Park Lane Bryant store are looking at as well.

Side-by-side views of the sketch made with the help of the lone Lane Bryant survivor and the surveillance shot of the Las Vegas robber show distinct similarities, which now have both the photos and fingerprints of the man in custody there, on their way here.

But there are apparent differences, too. One photo shows the robber firing a weapon into the cash cage before demanding money. The gun is in his left hand. Authorities in the suburbs say their gunman was right-handed.

Another possibile difference was the description here that the killer was African American. The suspect in Las Vegas, according to authorities, is Hispanic.

Tinley Park Police Chief Mike O'Connell calls this another one of the many tips they've investigated, and perhaps not even the most promising. But it will be checked out.

Lane Bryant has now sweetened the reward for information in the case. O'Connell says if you lead them to someone they end up charging, the money's yours, then and there. No longer will you have to wait years for a trial and conviction.

This is actually old news, the DNA tests found that this wasn't the killer. The reward for the case has jumped up to $100K, and that's just for information leading to an arrest and charges. The person giving the information would not have to wait for conviction to collect.

The store is still closed, the flowers and crosses are still there, there is still yellow crime tape in front and all the windows are covered. There is a big black sign in the window saying the store is closed indefinitely. I still have customers who ask if it's safe to come shopping in the complex, even now two months later. We have so much more security in the complex, and they are putting up cameras, but isn't that a bit like closing the barn door after the horses escaped? I don't really have any fear when I leave late at night, it was such an isolated incident. Crazy things can happen anywhere, I tell my customers.

Tinley Park is spending HUGE amounts of overtime money to find this killer, but it will only take ONE person being brave enough to call......

Default Story in Trib

I know some people here are still interested in this story. There is nothing new, but the Chicago Trib did run an article on it today I will share. If you look in the comments section, one young lady has started a website in memory of one of the victims:

In fact, I will post that link too because sometimes they erase the comments:
