Now sure if this is the right place, but it's not technically health either.
I am currently 29 and feel like I should take a bit better care of my skin. Currently I wash with Aveno facial wash in the shower. I need a moisturizer. My skin gets dry and flakey so I need to moisturize. I think the face wash dries it out. I used to get acne, not so much now. I would like something not oily, and something maybe medium priced range? what do you use? How much is it?

So what kind of skin do you have? Dry, combo? I'd guess you don't have oily...
I use Murad for the time being (I'm actually making an appointment with a derm tommorow to discuss skincare options). The line is mid tier as far as price. In the AM I use the Skin Perfecting Lotion and Sheer Lustre Moisturizer with spf 15, $33 and $35 respectively.

I like Clean & Clear Oil-free Oxygenating Ultra-Light Moisturizer...that's a mouth full lol.
It's light and adds just enough moisturizer for me. It's inexpensive too. ![]() |

You sound like you have skin like mine. If I don't use moisturizer, my skin gets very dry and flaky, especially after a shower. My nose, eyebrows, and the area of cheeks right under my eyes suffer the worst.
During the summer I use Lancome's Bienfait multi-vital moisturizer. It's extremely lightweight and soaks right into your skin, not greasy at all. It leaves my skin so soft and smells yummy. During the winter when it's really dry, I use two. On reeeeally dry days, I bust out the L'Occitane Ultra moisturizing shea butter fluid. Other times, because I'm really cheap, I use Cetaphil. I had always heard how great it is, especially for people with sensitive skin. I finally broke down and picked some up, and I'm really happy with it. My only qualms with it are the absorbency and if it's really humid, it can feel slightly greasy. You may also think about changing your facial cleansing regime. Almost anything that lathers is going to strip all oils out of your face and leave it feeling tight and dry, especially if you already have dry skin. I actually swipe Pond's Cold Cream in the deep cleansing formula over my face right before getting in the shower, then massage my face for a minute and wipe it off with a washcloth in the shower. It cleans makeup off better than anything I've ever used, and will clear the dirt off of your face while making it feel silky smooth. Face wash has not touched my face in years. |

I have extremely sensitive dry skin and I looove Dr Hauschka's Rose Day Cream. It saved my parched winter skin! It can be somewhat thick and oily but a little goes a long way. They do have a Light version of the Rose Cream that I haven't tried.

women should think about several things when looking for a moisturizer. She needs to think about her skin type, her individual skin care needs and whether she has sensitive skin. There are three basic types of moisturizer available: gel, lotion and cream. Gel is the lightest preparation, followed by lotion, with cream providing the heaviest dose of moisture. In general, mostly older women use the cream, since their skin needs the most moisture. Also, moisturizers often have lighter formulas if they are designed for daytime use, under makeup, with a heavier formula for nighttime, after cleansing.
Women with normal skin, oily or normal with an oily "T-zone" (the forehead, nose and chin areas) will probably want to begin with a gel-type moisturizer. This will provide moisture without a greasy or heavy feeling. It is also a good choice for any skin type for a daytime moisturizer, under makeup. This is especially important in winter, when the drier, colder air can really sap the moisture from the skin. Women who live in more arid climates, such as the Southwest, also need to be more conscientious about applying moisturizer, since the air doesn't have a lot of ambient moisture. Those women with normal or dry skin may want to try a moisturizing lotion. These will provide a heavier dose of moisture for skin that loses it more quickly. Dry skin also tends to be sensitive, so a woman will need to consider this. Fortunately, there are good moisturizers available that are fragrance-free, and designed especially for sensitive skin. A woman who knows ahead of time that her skin is dry and fussy will probably want to try one of these moisturizers first. Women with more mature skin will probably opt for a cream moisturizer. They will also be looking for preparations that promise to make skin look younger and firmer. Again, this is largely a question of individual needs and how sensitive the skin is. Some women are very sensitive to products containing alpha-hydroxy derivatives, as well as citric acid, or Vitamin C. |

I have combination skin but it gets extra dry in winter. I use Avon Nurtura Replenishing Cream. Only $8.00 a jar but you can also get it for as little as 3 bucks on sale.

Give the Olay Reginerist line a try. I have used it all from Skin Seuticals, Roc, MD Forte, and most of the makeup lines skin care. After all of that the two things I keep coming back to ... Olay and Cetaphil. The cetaphil is a wonderful product, I have use their cleanser and cream... for everything and yes for my face. Both Olay Reginerist and Cetaphil have been recommended to me by a Dermatologist.

Welllll.....
I have dry skin and a tendency to develop eczema on my face if I don't use a moisturizer daily. Problem is, I also break out if there is any oil whatsoever in the product. So, after years of trying out one thing or another, I settled on Neutrogena Oil Free moisture with spf 15 (available in pretty much all drug stores). Not as luxurious as a moisturizer containing oil, but it works well enough and keeps my skin in good condition. |

I just started back to using Palmers coco butter lotion. I work outside and the elements were killing my skin. This stays on all day and I love the smell of cocobutter.

Why don't you go into Sephoria and see what they recommend. Tell them your price range...
I use Aveda, but it's on the high end of the scale. You may also want to include a toner in your daily routine. I use to get terribly dry skin in the TZone and since I started with the toner, it's cleared up. |

I went to see my derm in mid December because my skin, which is normally really pretty and even toned, had been flaring up. I was freaking out over it (that probably didn't help things) and was at my wits end...to my delight she gave me some really helpful and invaluable advice, based on what I told her about my skin. Some background -- I'm pretty oily in the spring/summer, and combination in the winter however as of late, I was super parched and battling with some blemishes. Blech!
Here's what she told me to do: Stick to drugstore brands. Many mass market brands are just as good or better than expensive ones. Most active ingredients found in antiaging creams are similar whether its Neutrogena or Pericone. However, paying for the packaging, feel, etc...that's up to me, of course. She let me in on another lil secret -- her skincare comes from CVS, Walgreens too. Simply put, a woman who could pretty much afford what she wants, but chooses the drugstore stuff because it's effective. Nope, don't need a toner or exfoliator...or any of the other stuff salesfolk will try to get you to buy. Oh and did I mention she has the most velvety smooth chocolate looking skin I've ever seen?!? Sexual chocolate ya'll! Forgo facials. She told me more often then not, facials actually cause breakouts. Also, sometimes the aestetician doesn't really have a clear understanding of a clients skin/concerns and they are limited to what the spa has on hand, so sometimes its a bad situation. Its fine if I want to continue to go to the spa for relaxation, but maybe choose a different treatment. SPF, SPF, SPF!!! Even as a woman of color...I still need it. This is the antiaging serum, for me and where I am, agewise. Simple is key. Less is more. So I've been using Aveeno Positively Radiant Cleanser and the moisturizer w/spf 30, along with a Rx my derm sent off. So far, so good. But like anything else, it's a matter of trial and error...testing stuff out to see how your skin likes it. New year, new skin!

I have the dry, sensitive skin too, had it all my life. What I have found made the biggest difference to my skin, was that I changed my cleanser. The ones I used to use dried my face out more, which meant I had to plaster even more moisturiser on. I have now been using for 11 years, Liz Earle's Cleanse & Polish. Its fantastic, I could rant about it for hours. Its all natural ingredients, you use a muslin cloth provided, to wipe the cleanser off your face. its damp, so your face still feels really clean. It takes off heavy eyemake up too. Her products are sold on QVC and they jam the switchboards every time! Anyway, here is a link for her US site. - http://us.lizearle.com/products_deta...upid=1&mnuid=1
For moisturiser, I use Palmer's Cocoa Butter in the winter, and when my skin isn't so dry in the summer, I use Body Shop's Vitamin E cream, which is light and gentle, but works very well indeed. |

I use neutrogena and have for years and my skin looks pretty good. I also get the tinted moisturizer that I wear in the summer. The Oil of Olay regenerist line is very good also.

Give up dairy for a year and you will see a magical transformation in your skin.
Winter used to bring me flaky, red eyelids and general desert-dry skin. In fact, the whole carcass was a zone of patchy this and itchy that here and there, on and off and from time to time. Now, it's January and 17 degrees and none of that. |

So, I figured it may be a trial and error thing for what works for my skin. I bought a pack of these Ponds facial pads to use at night to remove any dirt and makeup. I bought Dove exfoliating wash/scrub for in the shower, and to match the dove moisturizer with spf 15 in it.
So far I like it, my skin is not flakey, yet it is not oily. So that makes me happy

I'm bumping this thread because...
...I need a new moisturizer too, and I am ready to start hittin the heavy artillery. I am 42, and I am noticing that my skin is losing its OEMPH, ya know. I have pretty sensitive skin and would never want to use stuff with alpha hydroxy acids for instance if they even still make it, but I wondered if anybody had any great recommendations for Magic Save Me From Aging moisturizers? I'm collecting a list what's already been posted in this thread, but I thought I'd ask again in case there were any aging-specific ideas out there. Thank you! BTW, your derm sounds smart, Ash. |

liz, I've heard good things about Oil of Olay regenerist line, Hope in a Jar by Philosophy and Kiehl's everyday moisturizer. Also, Total Turnaround by Clinique is supposed to make skin come alive....

Now, don't laugh..but i use Organic Coconut oil. It's hard and comes in a tub. you can buy it at walmart for around...$10. Or, i also use Wei East China Herbal Daily Renewel moisturizer. Both work excellent.. of course i'd also have to reccomend Aveeno Daily Moisurizer with SPF..i love the 'Positivley Ageless with shitake complex'...wonderful.

I use Clinique moisturizer and it is a little bit more expensive but a little bit goes a long way so it really lasts longer than a lot of other brands. They have a lotion and a gel depending on what your skin type is. I love it because it doesn't have a greasy feel to it so it feels great going on and it doesn't make my skin oily.
