Normally, I'm not crazy about bagels.
A wonderfully nice person at work has a college age kid who recently got a job at Einstein Brothers, so we've had bagels at the office a couple of mornings the past few weeks. We've even been taking turns bringing home leftovers. Some days ago, it was my turn to take home the few uneaten bagels. Bah. I thought I'd let them get crusty then crumble them to make raccoon treats. (Mr. Buffie would KILL me if he knew I gave them treats, which I do very rarely anyway, but let's just keep this on the DL regardless.) Here's where you come in. I had an interesting experience. Was it a chance discovery or have I invented something that I can market to stoners and make a mint? After a delicious but spicy bowl of chili and some baked fish for dinner, I found myself craving carbs. Prowling around the kitchen, I came across the bagels. Hrm... Gave them a poke expecting hockey pucks. No! They were as soft as the day I brought them home. Even more, there was a chocolate chip one in the bag. No idea they came in chocolate chip! Amazing. Needed cream cheese. Didn't have any. But I wasn't discouraged when I found a new jar of Betty Crocker Sinful Death in a Plastic Tub Triple Chocolate Fudge Chip flavor frosting. Sounds gross? Yeah, kinda. Split that bagel apart on a plate and slapped a nice moderate layer of frosting on it then put it in the microwave for about 25 seconds. It yielded a delicious, melty, chocolately, chewy, not-too-sweet awesome donut substitute. Holy crap, I'm seeing bagels in a whole new light. Why don't people advertise that you can do this? I would have been eating bagels years ago. Now I'm thinking of dozens of bagel/frosting combinations that I will soon being trying. Did you guys know you could do this? If so, why didn't you tell me!?!?!???!?!!? Talk about righteous noms. Duuuude. ![]() ^_^

Mate, you don't have to sell me on bagels. Loving Yiddische food is in my DNA.
It is like coming home.![]() If you are ever in Australia I will have to take you to my Aunt's home. She is a very vivacious elderly Hungarian lady that feeds you until you cannot take it anymore. ![]() I am glad you have come to your senses regarding bagels Buff. ![]() ![]() |

Whot!? Feeding the racoons...? Those bastards will tear up your porch like nothin' and when you try to shoo them away they'll look at you like you are interrupting some sort of little Tupperware party... Keep that up and I'm tellin' Mr. Buffie! Sheesh...
![]() So we are talking bagels here... hmmmmm... I'm with you Buffie, I don't particularly live for bagels, but I've also discovered that there are good bagels, not so good bagels and bagels that could easily break a window if thrown. My experience with bagels has mostly been with the store bought variety of bagels that are packaged, which are rubbery from the get-go at best. I've only rarely had bagels which I liked, the last being from a bakery near the university that I went to may years ago. People like Susannah that have relatives who know how to make good bagels are the lucky ones I suppose. I have heard of all sorts of crazy things being put on them which I haven't tried myself, so I think for the most part, it is a "discovery" which you have made Buffie. I checked out the Einstein Bros. Website, they even seem to have "Candy Cane" bagels. (I hadn't heard of this bagel place... I think they are just getting a foothold in L.A...)

If you tell Mr. Buffie about the raccoons, I will call you a liar right to your face, Stan.
N o . .l i e . -Tries looking stern. Can't keep straight face. Gives up.- In the spectrum of bagels, I don't know if Einstein Bros. is good, bad or neither, but like you, I find bakery-made much better than the horrible things from the grocery store. Sweet bagels rock indeed, Megan. I've never had a bagel sammich. Be honest, is it possible to eat a bagel sandwich without getting schmutz all down your shirt? Because I'm thinking of trying one, but is this something I should perhaps attempt at home before trying in public so as to avoid embarrassment... ? ![]() ![]()

I'm not a huge fan of bagels, but living here, I can get really good ones and there are numerous bagel shops to choose from. I don't recommend H&H tho btw, as their quality has gone down over the years.
I do like plain bagels with ham and cream cheese, or with lox and cream cheese. Paired with kalamata olives and dill pickles they're really good. As for the icing bagel, how can it not be sweet? After the bagel comes out of the microwave wouldn't it start to get rubbery and hard?...Sorry Buffie, but a frosting covered bagel sounds kinda ewww to this new yorker.

Ohkay, Mishe... you do have a point. -huff- LOL
Olwen, I know it sounds crazy, but I swear it was good. Maybe I had bad fish and I was a little wonky in the head? But it was... incredible.

Well, as long as you liked it.
Your tale of icing and bagels inspired me to make cupcakes.
