Default The 'Gay Super Bowl' Thread, otherwise known as The Acadmey Awards, 2009 edition

OK, who is watching the Oscars this Sunday? Are you watching for the fashion, the goof-ball acceptance speeches, the awards, or what? What are the chances for "Milk" picking up any awards? Who will be the nobody saw it coming actor category winner?

Help get me in the mood by talking up the Ceremony in this thread. Talk about Oscars past, the triumph of straight ladies playing lez and winning Oscars, the Brokeback backlash, or what have you, but please, help get me psyched up for the awards, because I'm not yet in the mood.

Hey now!!!

You could come to Philly where I have my annual Oscar night party!!! Lots of food, prizes, and snark will be had by all. It is usually an all ladies event, although we occasionally have metrosexuals. A stone groove will be had by all!!!

For those that haven't seen the Best Picture nominees, AMC theaters is having a showing of all five nominees tomorrow for $30. Check your local listings for locations!!!

I predict "Slumdog" will take most, but Sean Penn was great!!!

Ok...just a quick aside, then resume thread.

You know how the thread in a forum with the most recent post gets previewed on the main forum list? This title got cut off, so all I saw was "the gay super bowl."

I immediately thought it was about this porn....yes, a gay porn of a similar title from several years ago that involved a football. Man, I was wrong!

As you were.

Yea, I thought it was going to be a discussion of the possible gay undertones in American football.

You know, hot, sweaty men tackling each other in spandex while on the quest for balls.

Carry on then (go Heath Ledger)

Oscars are fun - aside from the Tonys which even more gay, the Oscars are the best awards show. I miss Billy Crystal.

The man is pure sexiness.

And Dustin Lance Black's acceptance speech:

Thank god I can rant about the horrid ridgid feelin' Hugh gave me, and how I got all misty eyed with Sean spurting "You Commie Homo-Loving Sons of Guns" and Dustin Lance Black just made me sob like a lil bitch baby. This year I set myself up for a big letdown Oscar wise, but I'm really glad I got to see that speech.

But yeah, The Oscars.....

You know, I don't like Sean Penn, I think he's a douche, and I don't think that he's nearly as humble as he let on in the speech. That said, his speech was pretty powerful, very meaningful, and that commie line was hilarious; and although his head is up his ass, I get the feeling now that his heart, at least, is in the right place.

Yeah, I'm not sure how I feel about Sean in general, but his speech was great. I will admit crying back when Hilary Swank won her Golden Globe and Oscar for Boys Don't Cry. I probably would have cried had Heath Ledger won for Brokeback Mountain, too.

Yeah, Sean gets on my nerves since I Am Sam, something about that character made me squeamish. Hilary's trailer park twang made me laugh and cry, she really did deserve that statue!

Gran Torino got gypped by not getting a nod or any notice there, that's for sure; however, I'm not sure that it would've (or should've) been nominated for anything other than director. As far as films go, there were several better to come out last year; Eastwood gave his best performance in years, but although it's an outstanding performance, it's still inferior to the performances given by... well, all the other actors nominated for Best Actor.

I do think that it should have been nominated for Best Song, though.

Gran Torino....I think the reason Eastwood wasn't nominated is because while his was an excellent performance he isn't really playing any characters he hasn't in the past. The only difference is this one is older. It's like Meryl Streep, if she's in a drama, you know she's bound to be nominated - but won't win because - been there done that.

The weird thing about the ocsars is how you can predict the winners without even seeing the films. I didn't see all of this year's movies, but I knew Slumdog was gonna win best picture (but not for all the other categories it took), Heath Ledger for best supporting, and Kate Winslet for best actress, Wall-E for best animated....I'm not a gambler, but I think I'm gonna have to start betting on the Oscars.

Did anybody else predict the winners without seeing all the films?

Not always true. Although there weren't really any surprises this year, there's been some upsets and surprises. I mean, I didn't think that Penn was going to get Best Actor this year, and I remember that it was a pretty big surprise when Crash won over a handful of films about homosexuality.

Most of the time, though, it's fairly predictable, which is a major weakness in the Oscars.

I've actually met him, and I've seen him several times with his mother and he really is a humble, low key kinda person.
