Well?! Is it?!
I thought of the question, cause I was looking at pictures of different hairstyles that aren't the basic Wavy or straight , ect . And I'm getting my haircut before my 'prom' may 22nd. [Also Dying, That's like. a whooole 'nother matter entirely.] So I was just wondering if any of the ladies here could advise me on this subject. It's sort of new territory for me? Last time I got my hair cut was over a year ago, I think close to two? But I just met with him and was like "... I uh, don't know what to do. Work yer magic. " I came out decent, thankfully, but I hate not knowing what I want/am going to get. :/ and I can't vision stuff on me. Clothes, Hair, ect. helppp? PS: Sorry. Couldn't find a 'hair' thread. D=

What?
No seriously, that's not something I've ever heard. I see big women with sleek, angular, multicolored hair all the time, and it's super-hot and anti-frumpy (which I think is pretty damn important!) Also, layers are your friend, because it sounds like you don't do much with your hair. That's one of the reasons I love my haircut, because it's layered in happy ways that mean I can just shower and leave the house - don't even have to blow dry or brush. Haha, I'm so lazy >_> What a weird concept, alternative hair not working on bigger women.... bizarre! |

Heee, couldn't resist posting this...
If you wanna play around with it, you can try some things on http://www.ukhairdressers.com... the virtual salon is WAY too much fun to play around with! Just get a picture of yourself with your hair pulled back (needs to be gif or jpg, and less than 50kb) and then start trying out different hairstyles. Remember you can change the size of the wigs too, because they're never the right size when you first select them. It's far from a perfect depiction, and the color selection is limited, but you can get a better idea of what shapes you like from this. Also, it's stupid fun ![]() |

From the perspective of one FA. (Disclaimer: one of my pet peeves is people who look like they are hiding behind their hair, and I probably like short hair on women more than most people)
I don’t think you see ‘alternative’ hair on BBW as often as you might on thinner women, but personally I don’t think that it is because it looks any less good. It could be that some BBW don’t want to attract attention and so stick with more generic cuts, it could be that hairdressers don’t encourage BBW to try more edgy styles, it could be all sorts of things, but I really don’t think that it is because those cuts can’t look good on BBW. I grant you, not every hair cut looks equally good on every face. And if you are uncomfortable with some part of your face (like many BBW don’t like their double chin), some hair cuts may bug you because they draw more attention to one part of your face or another. So yah, knowing what you want is no doubt a good idea, especially since prom season is coming up, so it might be hard to change if you end up really not liking the cut. Even if you don’t know the exact cut, having a list of things you do and don’t like when you talk to your hairdresser might help (I don’t want it longer than shoulders at the back, I want attention brought to my eyes, I want to show off some great earrings so I don’t want hair over the bottom of my ears, I don’t mind my neck showing…..). Seeing as you are getting this for the prom, you may even want to describe your dress or have a picture, so that he or she can see how it goes together (of course, some are much better than others at being able to see what will look on somebody, hopefully you have one of the ones with some vision). Finally, I apologize for my abuse of parentheses in this post (but they are just so handy!)

In my opinion, that depends. Honesty fat girls can totally rock the punk/goth look, but it depends. If you have a very pretty face, that doesn't look too 'cute' but still pretty, then yes crazy hair styles can look great. Eyes matter here too, must be striking. My hair looks best when black, but I can't handle colours other than brown too well. But sometimes you see really plain girls, fat or skinny, and more often than not I don't think it looks good. I really don't think anything is a matter of 'this looks good/doesn't look good on fat/skinny people', it depends on your individual characteristics

I see what you're saying, but the right haircut can do a lot to bring out those characteristics - it can enhance your face, emphasize your eyes/lips/whatever... it's really worth experimenting with, even if you don't think of your eyes as being striking or whatever.

I guess you sort of have to get into the mode of not caring about what other people might think. Regardless of if it is a small town or a big one. It's unlikely that you will see these people again anyway, the one's on the street who may say something or stare. I think if you like a hair style you should at least try it. I don't think weight should have anything to do with hair style and that's just my opinion of course. I knock down barriers, always been a system buster.. I suppose it's the Indigo Child in me.

I agree that it depends on your face shape, the placement of your features, your coloring, and the colors/styles you're eyeing.
Whether you're fat or thin, there are some looks - alternative or otherwise - that will flatter and others that won't. Your stature is absolutely irrelevant in calculating how well you can pull off a certain color - that all depends on your skin tone. Sometimes extra weight alters face shape and jawline to the detriment of a particular style, but I don't think that simply "being large" automatically disqualifies anybody from successfully incorporating any style or cut. Me personally, I need big, fluffy hair lest I come off like a total pinhead. My head isn't small, but it always looks tiny in comparison to my massive hip/ass complex. I used to have a sleek, blue-black bob, but I realized after awhile that it didn't look the same at size 24 as it did at size 12. So, I grew my hair out and let it revert to my natural color (which is more flattering me anyway).

I've had various colors in my hair in the past and I thought it looked great, regardless of size. I say go for it. :]

My opinions on this subject have basically all been covered, but to summarize: hell yes, alt hairstyles can look good on anyone!
And I just want to throw this in: I have seen some effin' sexy fat chicks with death hawks.

Well I am sporting no hair at the moment...well it has grown a smidge and I've had more compliments on it than when I had hair!

I've always been told that a sharp, kind of alternative I guess.. look is better for us ladies with rounder faces.
I have an inverted bob (shorter in the back and layered/stacked and longer in the front) and I get tons of compliments on it. But if your hair is wavy/curly.. be careful of going too short unless you WANT to straighten it everyday, because with some styles like that, there's no wash-n-go. Its all or nothing. My hair is wavy/curly and I have to straighten it if I don't want to look like some deranged poodle. ![]() |

Thanks Shar. That was actually the exact first compliment I got from one of the teachers after I shaved it.
