Your needs vary depending on your height, weight, exercise habits, and goals. There are calculators online that will help you estimate how many kcals you should consume to lose a certain amount per week, gain a certain amount per week, or maintain your current size.

Default intake

I think the number you have for normal levels sound about right, I consume about 3000 per day on average at a guess, and have eaten up to 8000 in a day on many times.

2500 on average (5'5", 97lbs, extremely active, reasonably high metabolism), 1800 if I can't work out. More if I am indulging a craving for something high-cal but these phases don't last very long.

Default I've Heard It Said......

I've heard it said that a person's weight settles to about 1 lb
per 10 calories of average daily food intake. That formula
would put me at 4450 calories per day, which sounds pretty
high to me. Factor in my disability and low activity level, then
3000 to 3500 calories per day could be realistic.

The 1800 calories per day the VA hosp had me on the first 2
times I was in this year was inhumane. I took legal steps
to prevent that from happening again. The 2500 calories per
day they had me on the third time I was in there was, at
least, manageable.

You know that's 10 calories for every lb of lean body mass, right?

That could well be right. One may wish to factor in a few
calories per day to account for moving extra body mass
around, too.
