Exclamation Instyler Curling Iron - Read Before Buying

OK, so I was up one night with my 7 month old who is having difficulting teething. After getting him to sleep, I saw an infomercial for InStyler Curling Iron. I was considering getting the curling iron until I checked out their website. It is being sold for $14.99 with a 30-day trial period. What they don't tell you in the television commercial is that the cost is much more than that (see link below).

http://getinstyler.com/lp/?linkId=22...a&custom=32829

HUH???!!!! This means after all is said & done, you will be paying more than $120 for the 2 curling irons. Also, please read the return policy carefully.

I saw that & thought it looked like a neat item. I did see how much the total cost was after all and it costs more than I can afford. Guess I'll never own one...

Actually, the 14.99 is what you pay FOR the trial period. I thought that was pretty clear on the site.

True, but they don't tell you this in either the informercial or in the shortened commercial:

"*LIMITED TIME OFFER! $14.99 Trial Offer is for two (2) InStylers® for 30 days. After 30 days, do nothing and keep BOTH InStylers® for just three monthly payments of $39.99. The second InStyler® is FREE!! (plus S&P)"

If you don't have access to the internet website, this can be misleading to those wanting to purchase this product.

It's shifty semantics, meant to draw people in by catching them off-guard. The website offer page plays up the "2 for 14.99" language upfront, then slaps on an asterisk which leads you to the real details on the bottom of the page. Most people will eventually see and understand the actual terms of the offer, but not until after they've been drawn in by "the cheap" and allowed themselves to get all excited about the product. :P

I haven't experienced the commercials, but I'm sure that the writers were trying really hard to arrange the copy in such a way that people would hear key words and phrases ("14.99", "two instylers," "30 day trial"), tune out the rest, and then automatically and involuntarily plug the words that they DID retain into the typical infomercial chorus of "two items for the low, low price of one with a 30-day, money-back guarantee."

Meh.

I agree, Tania. One really has to pay attention with this stuff. Shifty jerks.

I think some of the cheaper curling irons work just as well, the ones you can buy at Target etc.
Curling rods are good also, and regular rollers.
That TV special does not sound a good deal at all.

Yeah, unfortunately you have to look closely at the wording of it.

I agree. I know conair products have a bad rep, but I have 2 conair curling irons and they both work great for me. The thing I DID splurge on is my hair straightener (I have very curly hair) I invested in a maxi glide and my life has never been the same:

About 100 bucks, but its the only thing that gets my hair straight. I love it.

Pricing slyness aside... my hair is long and I quite often get it tangled up when I use curling or straightening irons on it. I dread to think the mess I could end up in with their rotating system. Getting tangled up in something that was spinning, and heated at the same time sounds like a recipe for fried hair and burnt scalp to me...

Heh, exactly what I was thinking, Tracey. I manage to get simple round brushes stuck in my hair all the time, so god only knows what kind of spastic hot mess I could get into with a contraption like that.
