Default The Amazing Luck/Chance Story Thread.

So I decided to make a thread as me and my friends were discussing all of the craziest events that just require pure luck for them to unfold. (i.e. Finding a $100 bill on the ground.) Now these stories don't have to be just about finding something. It could also be about a situation that made your day/month/life a whole lot better.

I hope this idea doesn't flop, by some luck .

In May 2006, a friend of the family received a phone call from the U.S. Embassy in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. A young pregnant girl had gone to the embassy to inquire about how to put her baby up for adoption. For her own reasons, she didn't want the child to be adopted by another Malaysian. The embassy official explained that she couldn't get involved in the situation, but she did refer the girl to a few local orphanages, and for good measure, contacted the family friend, whom she knew didn't refer for adoptions (but wondered if the friend might know of reputable agencies that did). By chance, my sister-in-law had spoken with this friend just a few days prior to her receiving this phone call, and had mentioned that my husband and I were in the early stages of getting registered with agencies in the U.S. (where we live). The family friend called my sister-in-law and mentioned that the pregnant girl was looking for suitable adoptive parents. My sister-in-law called us to tell us the little she knew: The girl was 19, 5 months pregnant, single, and wished to have the child adopted by an American or European couple. She was told that she could not place her child for adoption outside of the country, as Malaysia doesn't allow for open adoptions.

But ... my husband is a Malaysian citizen, and he was careful to have his MyKad identity card renewed every time it was set to expire. We live in the U.S. When my sister-in-law told us about the girl, we immediately said yes, we'd love to consider adopting the baby. She contacted the girl and told her about us, and the girl agreed that she would allow us to adopt her baby.

We had to rush through all of the paperwork, hire attorneys in both countries, and up to the day that I traveled to Malaysia, I wasn't entirely certain that we wouldn't face legal hurdles -- assuming, that is, that the girl didn't change her mind. We were told that she was pregnant with a girl.

She didn't. We had a few legal difficulties but they were eventually resolved (I had to live in Malaysia for nearly a year while waiting for the adoption to go through).

That unknown baby girl is actually our 3-year-old American son, Jegan Paul. When I think of the random collection of events that took place, that led him to us, and us to him ... I get all choked up about it, even today. And it is as close as I've ever allowed myself to believe in the possibility of divine intervention, rather than random acts of fate.

TJ, thanks for sharing that; I knew Jegan was adopted, but I'd never heard the story ... and a wonderful story (happy ending and all) it is!

Well, I popped in here to share one or two really lucky incidences, but they truly are incidental and trite following TJ's post. Anyhoo, this one time I picked up a Rubic's Cube and solved it by sheer luck - or stupidity - in, like ten steps. Impressed the heck out of the young man I was dating at the time, so that was very cool ... Never been able to do that again, tho. Another time, oh, this is kind of embarrassing it's so trite, that board game Trouble? Well, I won the game in one turn - got all my markers in and just swept the game. Again, impressed the guy - same guy, as it happened - I was dating.
